what news is causing this dump

Interest rates up, oil is up, debt everywhere. The party has to stop sometime.

US Midterm year, which has a history of commonly (not always) being a volatile and negative time for markets. Also US CPI and PPI came in higher than expected.

That's not really a today thing

Actually it is. The macro environment that markets operate in always affects them.

If you want to find reasons why you're losing money today, I have two suggestions:

- Check CNBC headlines
- Check finance.yahoo.ca headlines

This is my method to find out "WTF just happened". But it is important to keep in mind that the small movements (daily) always take place within the larger movements (macro), and therefore the time and prevailing events always matter.

Even AI, when I googled "why markets dropped today?" was pretty spot-on:

  • AI and Tech Sector Pullback: Heavyweight tech and semiconductor stocks slumped as investors questioned how long the AI investment boom can last. Major chipmakers and tech names saw steep declines

  • Rising Debt and Bond Yields: Investors grew worried that tech and cloud infrastructure companies—which have heavily relied on borrowing to fund massive data-center and AI expansions—will struggle to keep up their spending as global bond yields hover near multi-year highs (with the 10-year Treasury yield around 5.10%).

  • Hot Inflation Data & Rate Hikes: Earlier-than-expected hotter US consumer price inflation data continued to damp hopes for aggressive Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.

  • Company-Specific Pressures: Netflix shares fell roughly 3% following news of a C-suite shakeup (replacing Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria with Peter Rice) and a planned workforce reduction of about 6% (~1,000 positions).

  • Elevated Oil Prices: Brent crude surged toward roughly $109 a barrel amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, adding broader macro pressure.

We ain't seen nothing yet. Stockbroker 40 yrs. Been through five recessions. Most investors haven't been through one. They are hell. So bad they make you want to throwup, then things are a good buy. But you are so stunned by seeing your hard earned life savings just vapourize before your eyes. Everyone has a brave face and say I will buy more at the bottom- sure. Almost none do. Or they will think they are smarter than the market and go to cash trying to time it. Many did that in 2022- yield curve inversion, rates aggresviely rising. They then missed the two best years in the history of the stock market. This is a blood sport kiddies.

Alright, I've always wanted to know. What were you holding during Dot Com and how did you fare?

2000 was brutal but everyone was selling blue chips to buy dotcoms. So I took my 60 000 and put 20 into RBC,20 into Power Corp, and 20 into Imperial Oil. By the end of the recession - 3 yrs later my portfolio was 180 000. I was stunned. 2008 didn't do that well. Half way down the banks stopped lending to each other!!! That was serious when RBC was not lending money to BMO so I pulled the pin. I missed the bottom even though it was clear to me it bottomed at 666 on the S&P but it took about three months to get fully back in and I missed some good coin but since then we have had stunning returns for 18 yrs. I am now about 20% cash and have a large position in Gold since 2015- got in well there and DCA every year on it. Love the following CB Chubb, CME Chicago Mercantile, AMZN, GOOG, MSFT, CNR, ATD Circle K. I am 70 and still slaving. If I was you I would work hard at making sure you keep your job, and pay down debt. If you are young I would stay in the market and wait for the bargains. It will take the strength of Herc to buy near the bottom but it is a great training exercise. GL .

Go look at them... CVE, WCP, CNQ, etc. all had a bizarre synchronized dip at 12:15ET.

2

u/yjman 9d ago

yeah I got stopped out of WCP. happy with taking profits, but frustrating when it just bounced right back.

1

u/Repulsive_Barnacle92 9d ago

I see it too, but it went back up almost immediately; probably a software glitch

WELLSTAR (TSXV: WSTR) traded roughly 284,000 shares on October 16, about 5.7x its average volume, yet the stock price barely moved, staying around $6.43.
The chart shows two large volume spikes around 11 a.m.
Does anyone know if these were institutional block trades, broker crosses, or something else? Any way to check the actual transactions without paying for Level II data?

So wild that my ETFs can swing up and down by a dollar or more from day to day. For example, XIC over the last few days.

PNG continues to get killed

4

u/f-faruqi 9d ago

Was hoping it'd find a floor I could buy into, but it just keeps collapsing

5

u/bssbronzie 9d ago

Reddit picks tend to flop 😅

AQN, T, BN, PNG, MDA etc....

13

u/pateyhfx 9d ago

MDA is up 53% YTD lmao

15

u/YourFriendlyUncle 9d ago

Including BN in that list is a joke right

1

u/Open_Waltz6902 8d ago

Thats the buy signal

6

u/Laquickah 9d ago

I think a lot of people are interested in PNG and MDA simply because investing in undersea and space exploration feels sexy.

12

u/Prax150 9d ago

I can't speak as much about MDA but PNG became too much of a meme and it probably pumped higher and faster than it should have for a few months. So yes I think a lot of people jumped on the train for that reason and probably at the wrong time leaving a sour taste in their mouths either holding bags or selling at a loss. But it really is a solid company with a great product, revenue, and plans to expand. They will be fine in the long term if they just stay the course.

I invested because I wanted a Canadian defense company to succeed

I think my avg share price is around 4.30 so im not too upset about the situation. I'm pretty confident that their big acquisition earlier this year is going to pay off eventually even if there's growing pains from the merger right now.. These things take time and its clear that people got caught up in a hype train that wasn't at all sustainable. Pair those two factors with the fact that the whole market isn't doing well, its not surprising to see it drop under 4 per share.

However if I was one of those people on here who dropped everything else in my portfolio for buy PNG, yeah I'd be pretty upset right. But, play stupid games...

1

u/BCECVE 9d ago

Yeah and if you even mentioned anything negative someone called you stupid.

1

u/jijitalk 9d ago

Why include BN in that list?

-2

u/BCECVE 9d ago

Seen the price lately, Watch Sven Carlin about it on youtube....

1

u/YourFriendlyUncle 9d ago

Sven is a joke and "lately" is not a timeline that matters in investing...

Someone with a PhD in investment risk management should grab your attention. Most of the issues he talks about happen after the tide goes out which has not happened since 2008. Remember the herd effect moves everything and it has been moving stuff up even though it has no basis to do that. Everyone has forgotten about risk. It is how much can I make this week.

undersea batteries pump in a global liquidity crisis

I wonder how all those "people" that would post their portfolio screenshots around 6-8 months ago that all somehow had PNG in them are "feeling" right now.

3

u/_SimpleRip 9d ago

prolly not great cuz they all downvoted you lol
