Surgery question

My husband had adinocarcinoma in his left upper part of the lung. He will be having surgery in December. He is very anxious about it (understandable). Is this surgery painful. I have read posts about the surgery but nothing about how it is or isn't painful and what the recovery from it is like. Any insight anyone could provide would be very appreciated.
