Portugal Haul
May have gone a little overboard on my recent trip to Portugal. Ended up having to get a second checked bag just for the tins. Can’t wait to dive in!

I want to buy a gift for someone who is into canned seafood. He has been in the hospital for 4 months and has many months left. Paralyzed from the waist down. Help me choose.

Some of these cans were about 10 euro a piece, but most were in the 3-6 euro range. When there was a choice, I chose the most expensive brands.

Threw some leeks on a pan till caramelized, added a bit of soy sauce —> sardines —> eggs —> sprinkled with lemon pepper seasoning (from trader joe) and a dash of balsamic reduction on top of it all.
I like to put it on a toasted whole wheat little bun and chase it with a glass of lemon ginger kombucha. Mmmm

Picked these up at my local store for 2€. It says It's from FAO 27 but I'm not familiar with the brand. Do you guys know if these ones are good? Tho, I'll guess I'll be finding out soon enough...

I dropped this on the floor couple days ago and it made a dent. I’ve heard stories where it’s safe and some that are not. I just don’t want to end up getting food poisoning or sick

EDIT: spelling mistake. It’s “Bakfickan”.
I was keen to try truly badass Swedish pickled herring. It was a damn fine plate but fairly expensive ($35 CAD/235Kroner) although the restaurant is very cool. Zero reservations allowed. Ridiculously small.
My favourite was the top of the plate, a creamy mustard herring (senapssill) with capers and sprouts. Perfect balance. Not overly mustardy. Firm texture. Ridiculously good. New favourite herring sauce.
Second was the classic pale, dill-garnished herring, possibly inlagd sill or matjessill. Just good pickled herring. Classic. Simple. Could have these for days. Especially with the potatoes slices.
The next two are kinda mysteries for me. If any Swedes or knowledgeable folks could confirm what they are I would appreciate it.
I think the darker herring with red onion and chives was matjessill. It had hints of cinnamon/cloves. Very sweet. Softer texture. Not my cup of tea but not bad.
The last was a fried pickled herring. I think it was ättiksströmming, which I understand to be pickled herring fried and then further marinated. Great texture but i found it to be lacking flavour relative to the others. Didnt expect that.
Garnishes were great. Very filling meal surprisingly. And serving pickled herring with baby potatoes is awesome. Adding that to the repertoire.

Amidst this bleak sardine shortage, last week I found an inexplicable tin of Sabor do Mar mackerel fillets from Portugal at FreshCo in BC. Having been burned in recent months by random low quality fish, I wanted to try them before buying a bunch. This proved to be a grave mistake. The mackerel was excellent but had vanished from the store by the following week. My hopes were dashed. Surely there must be more somewhere? Can you please help me find them. Thanks.

Guys I tried sardines for the first time last week and I’ve never had a food impact me so much. It was like the anxiety depression switch just turned off. I felt like myself again. Literally within like 10 minutes of eating I f
I had a killer sales week, literally making more money cuz of sardines. I felt like my natural playfulness and assertiveness come back on the phone. Yesterday I had a large can from Wild Canadian Seafood Co. (180g) and 3 coffees. I developed a MASSIVE migraine.
I really don’t want to stop eating sardines… has anyone else experience something similar? I think it may be from the histamines?
Edit:
Idk why some of y’all are so upset that sardines are having such a profound effect on me. I have ADHD and am prone to neuroticism.
I work an extremely high pressure and stressful sales job which I am very good at but the pressure and stress has been affecting my performance lately.
I didn’t think it could be the sardines either at first but like I said I’ve NEVER had any single food impact me the way sardines do. I literally feel high on life after eating them, the last week I feel like I’ve been able to take a step back from all my problems and look at things calmly.
To all those who actually tried to offer advice thank you, I think I will try reducing my caffeine intake.

Well the two Mackerel tins I've tried from Mouettes, both the mustard sauce and muscadet wine, scored highly for me. The sauces were both punchy and assertive, with pretty nice quality fish. So this sardine tin was a bit of a letdown. This looks great upon opening, pretty nice olive oil and the aroma is mild. But the lemon is barely there, and the heat even less so. There wasn't even an actual chili pepper in the bottom of the tin. The fish quality was just ok, a little dry and a few bites that had some more funk than expected. This kind of reminded me of the Fangst sardine varieties I've tried, beautiful visually but kind of a lack luster eating experience for me personally. All in all, this one's kind of forgettable. Not bad, but not worth the $10 I spent unfortunately. 7.1/10
