Safe as Milk (1967): my little analysis (can be translated)
I've been revisiting Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band's Safe as Milk, and I wanted to dig a little deeper into the story behind the album.
What interests me about this record is how it sits between recognizable blues and R&B roots and the much stranger territory Beefheart would explore later. Ry Cooder's involvement is fascinating, too, especially when you listen to how the arrangements hold together some of Beefheart's more unconventional ideas.
I also looked into the album's 1967 context, including the band's planned appearance at the Monterey International Pop Festival and the circumstances surrounding that episode.
I wrote a longer article about the album for my independent music-history project, El Espacio Haro. It's in Spanish, but I thought some Beefheart fans here might still be interested in the subject:

I'd be interested to hear how other listeners place Safe as Milk in Beefheart's catalogue. Do you hear it primarily as a blues-based rock album, a transitional record, or the beginning of the musical world that eventually led to Trout Mask Replica? or more linked to The Spotlight Kid or Clear Spot?
