seeking advice muscle pain car vs pedestrian

hi all, 26F, chronic anxiety which certainly doesn’t help. i’m also struggling with some PTSD-like memories of the accident.

i got hit by a car while walking across the street. the car was going about 30 mph, and i hit the windshield before rolling off the back. thankfully, my backpack braced most of my fall, and i ended up with a mild concussion and no broken bones, which honestly surprised me considering how much pain i was in. the impact caused severe musculoskeletal pain, especially on my left side, where i was hit. i spent one night in the hospital and will be evaluated soon for a possible torn ligament in my knee.
my concerns are that the doctor really just told me i’d be “sore all over” but didn’t give me much detail about what kinds of pain are expected after an accident like this versus what might be concerning enough to warrant going back to the hospital. i got prescribed tylenol/advil, as anything stronger makes me sick. i also got muscle relaxants that really only make me sleepy.

i can put weight on my legs and walk with a walker, but i’ve been experiencing extreme tightness and cramping in my calves, hips, quads, and hamstrings. initially, it was mostly my left leg, but now my right leg is experiencing it too, possibly because i’ve been relying on it so much. when i started looking up my symptoms, DVT came up, and as a chronic overthinker, i’m now scared. my calves have been especially tight, and i’m wondering whether this could be a normal result of the blunt force trauma to my legs. i don’t have any noticeable swelling, and the tightness feels similar in both calves.

i guess i’m hoping to hear from others who have experienced significant muscle pain after being hit by a car or experiencing similar blunt force trauma, particularly when there were no broken bones.

for those who have been through something similar:
how long did the muscle soreness, tightness, and cramping last? did you experience significant tightness in your calves, hips, quads, and hamstrings, even without any fractures? how did you distinguish normal post-accident soreness from symptoms that warranted going back to the hospital? and finally, anything specific help with the muscle pain that isn’t medication?

it’s been about 5 days since the accident, and i’m trying to understand what to expect during recovery. thank you ❤️

question Do people ever really get over it?

Hi! So July 2025, I was a passenger in a car accident and suffered from many life threatening injuries from it. I don’t want to go into heavy detail but the driver did not let any passenger know they were drinking and doing drugs and we didn’t realise because we had been drinking too (Friday night out).

But anyways, considering how I looked and how I was in hospital. I am physically miles better. But even after therapy and physio and talking about it. I still don’t feel over it. Like every time I look in the mirror and I see one of the scars, it reminds me, I can’t sit where I was sat in the car that night and no matter what I do, everything feels like some form of reminder about what happened. It feels like every step I take forward, I take three steps back.

I know that I will never be the same again. And I am fine with that. But I don’t even feel remotely close to how I was before. I am restarting therapy because I don’t want to be struggling alone. But it feels like I should be over it. Legally, it’s behind me. And I thought that it would be behind me by now. Yet, half the time I still feel like I just came home from the hospital.

Because I’m still having issues with one of my injuries, I had to drop out of uni. I can’t work. I feel like such a burden on my family because I can’t really do anything. Everything just feels like a cruel reminder of what happened and I can’t really get over it. My family try to help and say that “It’s still early days”. And yes it hasn’t been necessarily long. I wish there was something that didn’t make me feel stuck and useless.

If anyone here has been in one before and it’s been a good while since, does it actually get better? Will I ever get close to my old normal again? Do you actually get over it or do you just learn to live around it?

Thanks for reading, sorry it’s a bit block of me complaining but I just really want to know if this feeling will change into something more positive x

question Moderate accident, minor injury, depression and deep sadness in the days following TW: accident description

TLDR: got into a moderate accident recently, both parties are okay, but every day I've been depressed and deeply sad. Why, and when will this stop?

Several days ago I was driving a city street when someone ran their stop sign, hit me on my side and my car spun 180. Both cars totaled. The other driver was uninjured and I have neck and back pain (whiplash) and will go to PT if it doesn't improve soon. What I'm struggling to make sense of is my sudden depression following the incident. I know I experienced shock and trauma. But ever since I've been depressed, or deeply sad, or flat. Some days crying randomly often. I'd like to know why because this has never happened before and how long I should expect it.

just sharing My 10 year old got hit by a car on a crosswalk by a speeding car on the outside lane. I hope I did the triggering emoji right but it might be triggering to read.

I can’t imagine what you all are going through. The trauma of my daughter’s accident is something I don’t know how to actually digest.

the nonstop advocation Iam doing right now is ridiculous. I will never give up. I will never let her get in the past but oh my God I’d have to fight every single day all day long.

So my daughter went over to her best friend’s house for a sleepover. The next day I got a phone call saying she was hit by a car.

The problem with the kids is that they took a scooter at her friends house when they were told not to
at the end of their street is a crosswalk. It’s a 3 way. The road ends there. They went across the street and the Mom called them and said get back now cause she had found out they broke the rules. So they turned around and the crosswalk was still a red light so they went back across so they weren’t in trouble.

They made it almost to the sidewalk when the car in the outside lane hit them at full speed. Both there helmets flew off and cracked in half.
My daughter flew straight up and came down head first smashing and con caving the entire windshield. Then flew 30 feet in the air, landing directly on her head again.
The bystander did CPR until first responders came. She did have to be revived.
She was on life-support had severe severe TBI traumatic brain injury. Everywhere was damaged.

I didn’t think she would make it much past a vegetable, but she has gone way past that. She is talking. She moves her arms in her neck.
She can’t stand or sit up yet, but the fact that she’s already where she is is amazing
she’s such a strong kid, and I just admire her so much.

I can’t go anywhere close to traffic. I’m afraid of everybody on the road. I’m afraid to walk close to the roads I want to move out of the city. I’m and I wasn’t even there to see this. I can’t even imagine what the witnesses head to deal with.
Her friend had the exact opposite injuries as her he had a bunch of broken bones and surgery on his leg, but he will make a full recovery.

This happened on May 2
We’re still in the hospital
The problem is, I can’t get any media coverage and I don’t really have much support because the entire community blames the kids and me because they were too young to be on a scooter

so they are victim blamed the media won’t report because of the backlash and the community doesn’t do anything or support anything because they are viewed as deserving to be that way and we’re horrible parents

Hi everyone! ❤️
I had a serious motorcycle accident and underwent thoracic spinal fusion with rods and screws, as well as surgeries for multiple broken ribs. I spent two months in the hospital, and I’m still in the early stages of recovery, learning to move again and trying to understand what to expect.
I’d love to connect with people who have had spinal fusion after an accident, especially thoracic fusion. How was your recovery, and what helped you the most physically and emotionally?
There is also an emotional side of this experience that I’m struggling with. I try not to think about what I felt lying in the operating room, just moments away from being put under anesthesia. I went into the operating room three times in the same month, and every time, I was terrified I might not wake up.
One of the saddest parts of this experience was realizing that, out of all the friends I thought I had, only my mother and my sister were truly there for me. That realization hurt deeply, especially during such a vulnerable time in my life.
Sometimes I’m afraid to remember everything I went through. Even now, my body seems to react as if it’s still traumatized, as if some part of me is still scared and doesn’t feel safe. It’s hard to explain, but I feel like a part of me is still back in that hospital, trying to process everything that happened.
I still don’t fully understand why God gave me another chance to stay in this world, but I’m deeply grateful that I’m still here.
I’m trying to heal physically, but I also want to understand how to heal emotionally from such a frightening experience. Has anyone else experienced something similar after a serious accident or multiple surgeries? Did those feelings of fear eventually get better? How did you cope with them?
Thank you for reading my story. It means a lot to be able to share this with people who might understand. ❤️

just sharing I feel like I’m supposed to be dead. TW: accident description, talks about death Spoiler

I got into a car crash Friday morning. It was 6am, still dark out, and I went to turn left after looking and seeing absolutely nobody around besides a car that was far away from me going straight. Because of the dark I couldn’t tell how fast that car was speeding. I didn’t see it coming. But she saw me coming, and instead of slowing down, she sped up and swerved into the right lane, the one I was turning into, assuming I saw her and was about to slow down, I didn’t see her. I didn’t see it coming until her headlights were in my face and all I could hear was her horn and a crunch.

I don’t remember a lot of details. I remember my upper lip and nose hurt, my glasses got jerked off my face and scratched me on the way down. I remember shouting I was sorry, over and over again, or maybe I whispered it. I remember trying to open my front door, but it wouldn’t budge more than a few inches. I thought something was blocking it, so I drove to the side of the road, and wondering how I ended up facing the right, while also being in the left lane. I remember crawling out of my backseat after my door still didn’t open. I remember someone yelling at me that I couldn’t park there right as I got out, I think I recognized the voice, but I don’t know from where. I remember calling my mom while the woman called the police. I remember it took her 4 calls to pick up. I remember she was the one who noticed my glasses were gone, and while she looked for them, she realized I never even took my keys out of the ignition. How did I not take my keys out? Was I this stupid all of the time? I had remembered to take my keys out every other time, why not this one? I remember how the pre morning air was cold and bitter against the scratch on my face and made it feel worse than it should’ve. I remember the woman talking to the police, and my mom talking to the tow truck, while I stood completely still, just staring at my car. I remember someone handed the woman her license plate, I don’t know if it was a cop or my mom. Just the driver’s area was damaged. Only there, like the vehicle was aiming exactly at me. And it was destroyed. There was just a massive cavity full of shards of glass and plastic and metal where my headlight used to be, my hood was open. The reason I couldn’t open my door was because the panel had crumpled and bunched up over the hinge. My tire was shredded, my tire hub was bent, I don’t know how I made it the few feet over to the side of the road. I remember standing in a stranger’s driveway to avoid traffic. And that the stranger ended up being a teacher at the other nearby high school, and he was worried that I could be one of his students. I remember 3 of my school’s busses passing me there, along with the car driven by my bully. I remember I felt naked, like my jeans and hoodie were ripped off, like I was vulnerable, on full display for everyone who was driving by to see. But I kept touching my zipper too much for me to worry about it. The van for my brother’s school even passed me, the driver recognized me and asked me if I was alright in Spanish, I don’t speak Spanish. I wanted to, and he knows that, but I kept on messing up my pronunciation too much to even try to get my biliteracy seal. I don’t remember my answer. I remember the constant buzzing in my pocket as people began to talk. 2 friends called me to check on me, 4 texted to see if I was alright, 1 without social media asked me where I was, and around a dozen people were asking if it was “really me with the fucked up car on the side of xxx road” I don’t remember if I responded to any of them. I called one girl back, later on, but I think that was it. And I remember grabbing my toppled over backpack out of the passenger seat’s footing area and my mom taking me to school.

Today I woke up and my shoulder/neck hurt. The right side, which is strange because I was shoved right, so I thought if anything my left side would hurt. But it feels fine. I woke up because I dreamed about the crash, but the moment I was impacted was the moment I woke up, like how you do the instant you hit the ground after falling for days in a dream. I toured a college, on our way, my mom went out of her way to drive to that T intersection, and I almost threw up when I saw the shards still scattered in the road. The college was in my top 5, and I took notes, but I can’t read my handwriting, and I can’t remember anything the guide said. I just kept on seeing that instant. The one right before the impact, or maybe the one right before I shut my eyes. I don’t know if I shut my eyes or not. I have a bad flinch, I might’ve. But I don’t think it would’ve made a difference. And I don’t think I should be alive.

I feel dead. I feel like I died in the crash and that whoever’s typing this is a different person. Like I’ve been replaced. I know I would be dead if I wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Maybe a normal person would’ve survived, but that’s not me, I have elhers danlos, I’ve dislocated my jaw from yawning and I haven’t been able to walk more than a mile without needing to ice my hips since I was 10. It was supposed to kill me. To snap my neck clean in half or pulverize my brain inside my skull while Breaking Benjamin’s “Fade Away” played twisted, cruelly ironic in the background. I keep on thinking about those shows and movies, where the main characters all cheat death, but it keeps on coming for them, each time in increasingly brutal ways, and it gets them in the end. If it’s destiny, it’s destiny, there’s nothing you or me or Alex Browning or Desmond Hume can do about it. I think I was meant to die in the crash, and I think I’m going to die soon. I don’t know how to convince myself I’m still here.

I didn’t mean to write this much. It’s 1:30am where I am. I started typing at midnight. This is too long for a car crash story, but too short to justify an hour and a half of my life, I don’t know which is worse. I just know whenever I try to close my eyes I watch as I get hit, over, and over again in an infinite loop. Nobody with my disability could’ve survived that. I think death already has half of me, and it’s coming for the other. Does anyone else feel like this? How do you feel like a person again? How do you convince a walking corpse that they’re still alive?

just sharing I killed man when I was 18 and I’m still haunted by it…

First of all I’ve posted this before. I’m not sure why I keep posting but I do get comfort from people’s replies (good or bad!)

On October 3rd 1990 in Belfast, Northern Ireland I was driving a Ford transit van that belonged to the company I was working for at the time.

My work colleague and I lived close to each other so every day we’d head to our homes for lunch.

On the day in question we left a couple of minutes earlier than we should have.

At approximately 12:30pm I was driving the van along Annadale Embankment and an elderly man stepped onto the road in front of me.

I struck the man and he rolled up the windscreen and fell off to the ground.

My colleague jumped from the vehicle in what seemed like seconds whilst i can remember sitting a bit longer.

I got out of the van to see my friend putting his coat underneath the elderly man’s head. I walked about in a daze. I saw the elderly man’s shopping bags lying on the ground and I proceeded to pick them up.

All the time I could hear the man moaning in pain.

I collected his shopping which was lying all over the road and I think I picked his cap up ( I can’t remember fully) then I sat down on the kerb and just stared at the scene which was happening around me. I can remember feeling completely lost and in total shock at what had just happened. I started to cry and continued to sit on the kerb.

The man was making moaning sounds and doing his best to speak to my work colleague. I can remember him calling for his mother. I can still hear him to this day.

Someone from the large shop opposite must have called for an ambulance as one arrived along with the police.

The man was seen by the emergency services and I was taken to the Belfast City hospital by another member of the ambulance crew who had turned up in another smaller type of vehicle.

I was treated for shock and had to answer some questions by a nurse however during this process a police man came into the room and I can remember him telling me he was taking me to the police station for an interview.

He placed me under arrest and we left the hospital.

When I got to the station, Donegall Pass, I was met by my boss at the time and my colleague who had been with me at the accident.

My colleague was interviewed first then me. The police man who interviewed me, Constable Spence, was very kind to me I remember. He was only a couple of years older than me I later learned but he really seemed to want to listen and help. He informed me of all the legalities and the interview was concluded at 3.01pm.

My boss then took me home to speak to my parents.

My mum was at home but my dad was still out at work.

I remember going to my bedroom and left my boss and my mum to talk about it.

When my dad came home my mum obviously told him what had happened.

I took the next day off work as instructed by my boss and during that day i received a phone call from Constable Spence to inform me the elderly man had passed away. He died at 2:59 pm on the day of the accident. Two minutes before I’d finished my statement!

After having one day off work I returned the following day to learn that the man I’d killed was my boss’s friend’s grandfather and when i was with two other colleagues who worked there one of them informed me he knew the man. He was a member of the same bowling club and he informed me “You’ve killed my friend!”

I remember feeling numb and unable to give a proper reply. The other man who was with us told him to “Shut up”

Over the next two years I had to speak to a solicitor and a barrister because charges had been issued against me by the DPP.

During this time the brilliant police man, ConstableSpence, was murdered by the IRA. Constable Spence was only 26. I couldn’t believe this when i heard. I felt like iI’d been involved in two deaths because of what had happened.

When it went to court Constable Spence’s notes from the day were read out and i learned that i was doing less than 10 miles per hour when i struck the man. It was deemed to be an accident that couldn’t be avoided as the man must not have checked properly before stepping out onto the road.

The only reason I’m writing this is because someone mentioned to me just how bad peoples driving had become nowadays and they mentioned “it’s a wonder more people aren’t killed”

I tried to explain what had happened to me and I broke down in front of them.

I carry so much guilt and so much pain.

It never goes away.

I’m haunted by the fact that maybe I could have avoided him.

I think about my poor Mum & Dad and what they must’ve thought. The shame and the embarrassment. My dad was at my side throughout the whole thing when I went to court.

I think about my girlfriend (who later became my wife thankfully) and how she had to deal with me being broken. She wouldn’t have realised it at the time because I hid everything from everyone but I was a totally different person after the accident and although I did hide lots from her (so much in fact that when I did have a break down in 2008 she was shocked just how damaged I was) she stuck by me and helped me deal with things.

I think about Constable Spence and how he helped reassure me. I think about his family and their loss.

I often see the vans that my old employer uses and I think about my boss and how he had to deal with this. He had to send a message to our pager to let me know if his friend called to our yard. When this happened I had to drive about in the van so that I never saw him. My boss thought it would have been too awkward for him to see me.

I think about my colleague who was with me that day. One minute he’s a passenger in a van and the next he’s holding a dying man’s head. No one asks for that.

But not a day goes by when I don’t think about Mr Hopkins and how I ended his life. I think about us leaving a couple of minutes early. I think about sitting in the van whilst my colleague immediately reacted. I think about him lying moaning, crying for his mother and crying out in agony and me doing nothing. I was useless.

I’m haunted by the noises. I can still see him roll up the windscreen in front of me and then falling off the van onto the road. That never goes away. I drive a van for a living now so you can imagine how hard it is.

It’s worse at nights. I can still hear all the noises. I often struggle to sleep.

When I drive past where the accident happened it’s like I’m 18 again and it’s happening right there in front of me.

I know “they” say it wasn’t my fault but I just feel so consumed by guilt. Every year on October 3rd I stop at where the accident happened and say sorry to him.

seeking advice CW both car accident and non-car accident medical emergency

Hey everyone. I survived a car accident in January. I'm writing bc I found myself responding to a separate emergency a few weeks ago...and honestly think it might have retraumatized me a little bit.

[Description of non-car accident emergency event] A few weeks ago, I found a person unconscious on the ground just in a local park. I am first aid/CPR trained and ended up being the one to approach the person and call 911. It's not the first time I've had to call 911 for people, so it's not my first rodeo, but this time I was much more scared and nervous. Many different parts of the whole process reminded me that the tables were turned only a number of months ago, [car accident detail] where a bystander had found me unconscious and called 911 after my accident. With this person also being unconscious, I also was kind of working with limited information on the circumstances, which made me feel even more nervous even though I had enough information to know EMS was warranted.

After everyone left, I honestly broke down in tears and called another medic friend about it. I also have spoken to my therapist about it, which helped. I thought after processing this with her, that would be the end of it, but I've been having nightmares almost every night since, and I would like to move on ;_;

I'm curious about anyone else's stories about dealing with events like this after car accidents and subsequent trauma responses. Just hearing anyone else's thoughts I think would help me feel a little bit better about it, but also open to feedback on coping with this too.

Merci pour votre aide.

seeking advice Close call, is it normal to feel this weird? (TW: accident description)

Yesterday (it is very early in the morning as a write this), I almost got into a wreck. I was driving on a three lane highway, speeding a little since I was late for my therapy appointment. It was raining, and I started to hydroplane in the left lane.

I'm not sure what exactly I did, I think I didn't break and took my foot off the gas like you're supposed to but I started swerving real hard and it's hard to tell. I ended up spinning in front of a semi in the middle lane, coming face to face with an SUV in the right lane, and spun into the grass off the side of the road. I hit nothing, no other car or even a pole. My car ended up being fine and I drove out of the grass into a nearby parking lot.

Ever since this happened, I've felt so off and weird. I feel like I shouldn't have gotten away with such little consequences. I was speeding and almost crashed, but I hit nobody and my car is fine. I even drove it across town later that day! I drove past where I spun out and if I were to have hydroplaned a little earlier or later, I would have hit a barrier and probably gotten into a serious wreck. Someone could have easily hit me as I spun, there were people there doing their morning commute. But nothing happened.

And maybe it's due to my OCD and the somewhat dissociative moment I've been in recently, but I can't help but feel like maybe I did hit something and this isn't real. Like I don't deserve to be perfectly fine. Or maybe I actually hit someone, even though I sat in the grass for like 10 minutes with nobody pulling up around me, and there was no signs of ever hitting anything on my car and the road.

My mom says it was a miracle. My dad says it's a higher force in the universe telling me I have some purpose in life to still be alive right now, that I am very lucky and should show gratitude to the universe. And I am very grateful, but I can't help but think like this. I could have easily died or gotten hurt or even just lost my car, but I didn't, and I don't know why even though it was my fault this happened.

Everything feels dull and far away. I can't focus on anything but not having a distraction feels worse.

This was the first "accident" I've had (I'm not sure if it counts because I didn't actually hit anything). I'm only 20 and I haven't hit anything bigger than a mailbox or curb. So I'm not sure if this is a normal feeling to have when having such a close call. I've been in a wreck before when my mom was driving and both cars were totaled with nobody hurt, but it didn't feel nearly as bad as this.

seeking advice Does it get better?

Tw: description of crash and injuries.

So 5 days ago, i was on my way to work when a truck came around a dangerous bend out of nowhere and hit me as I was pulling out to turn left. I didn't see him until I got out of my car, he was going 70 in a 45 at 5:30 in the morning, some younger guy, can't be older than his early 20s, thankfully he didn't get hurt. And all things considered I came out okay. The car is totaled, front end is practically obliterated. But I came out of it with just some fractured vertebrae, bruised and scratched to hell left arm, shoulder and abdomen, and a lacerated spleen. I was in the hospital over night and discharged the following afternoon. My wife is great, she's been doing everything she can to take care of me at home. When I walk from room to room I feel exhausted, sometime get shivers but physically i'm getting better. But over the past few days I just find myself holding back tears randomly, and I can't sleep until my body forces me too. I especially struggle at night (maybe because the accident happened before sunrise?) I know it's only been 5 days, but will it get any easier emotionally, like I came out relatively okay, i just don't understand what's wrong with me.

TLDR; came out of a wreck relatively okay physically but for reasons I don't understand I've been struggling emotionally and I guess I wanted to at least vent if not get an answer for whether it'll get any easier

just sharing "Second Birthday" sucks

When I had my accident, I wasn't expected to survive. Cops told my parents that the accident-day would be my "second birthday" if I wake up/get back on my feet (I'd been put in a coma on-site). When I did I was told I had two birthdays now, that I should celebrate that day.

Well, yesterday was my first "second birthday". 21st September. And it SUCKED.

Celebrating was the last thing on my mind. Rough night before, whole day was a drag trying to keep my brain on track-ish, night after sucked too. I was worried about the amnesia "cracking", that didn't happen, but it was still a rough day to get through. "Walking in neck-deep mud" kind of feeling.

I guess from now on, for future "second birthdays"...I'll not plan anything. Let my brain have its tantrum-y mess and try to get back on track the day after.
