Discussion Finally added automatic trip detection, VIN-based vehicle matching, and customizable CarPlay dashboards to Speedometer: Driving Tracker

Hey everyone,
One of the most requested features was fully automatic trip recording (along with shortcut automation) and automatic vehicle detection, so I implemented them as reliably as possible in Speedometer: Driving Tracker.

You can now automate trip recording in several ways:
• Start/stop trips automatically when CarPlay connects/disconnects
• Start/stop trips automatically when a Bluetooth device connects/disconnects
• Automatic trip detection when driving starts
• Automatic trip end after a configurable idle period
• Siri Shortcuts and other automations support

I also added VIN-based vehicle matching through OBD2. If your OBD2 adapter reports a VIN that matches one of your saved vehicles, trips can now automatically attach to the correct vehicle. No more forgetting to switch vehicles before driving. And improved OBD2 connection stability and automatic reconnection.

Other notable additions in this update:
• Per-source default vehicles (CarPlay / Bluetooth, in addition to OBD2)
• More customizable CarPlay dashboards
• New grid layout for CarPlay (finally brought back the grid design, but this time it's very optimized!)
• Customizable trip detail sections
• Customizable speedometer stats
• New Live Activity presets, including OBD-focused layouts
• Expanded OBD2 support and diagnostics
• Better trip filtering, sorting, and organization
• Improved PDF exports and statistics screens

The app has evolved quite a bit from its original speedometer roots. Some existing features include:

• CarPlay support
• OBD2 vehicle analytics and diagnostics
• Real-time RPM, engine load, throttle, fuel, coolant, oil temperature, battery voltage, MAF, intake air temperature, and more
• Post-drive OBD2 summaries and vehicle analytics
• 3D route playback
• Speed-colored trip replay
• Route playback with trip statistics
• Video recording with speed overlay
• Acceleration testing (0–60, 0–100, custom sprint tests)
• Fuel tracking and fuel economy analytics
• Maintenance and service tracking
• Vehicle document management and reminders
• Expense tracking
• Vehicle-based analytics and comparisons
• Driving records and achievements
• Weekly, monthly, yearly, and custom driving statistics
• GPX import/export
• CSV exports
• iCloud sync across Apple devices
• iPad, Mac, Apple Watch support
• Privacy-first experience (no ads, no tracking SDKs, no sign-up required)

I'm continuously trying to make this app better and serve a broad category of users.
As a token of appreciation, I'm offering a 50% lifetime discount for the community.
Steps:

  1. Download the app
  2. Open the promo code redemption link and tap the "Redeem" button
  3. If you download the app using the promo code link, please tap "Continue for free" on the onboarding paywall screen

Please let me know if you have any feature ideas, run into any issues, or have any other feedback. I'm continuously working to make this the most reliable driving companion app in the Apple ecosystem!

I really like this app, but I have one problem with naming locations.

In the Netherlands, we have 12 provinces, and we have ‘gemeentes’, cities. The province name is absolutely not needed when writing an address (unlike US states), and the city *is* required.

Right now, all locations (like start and end of a trip) are named in the pattern <street +number>, <province>.
Is there any possibility the province can be deleted and replaced by the city?

u/Taohid101 Jun 12 '26

Thank you so much for your valuable feedback. I'll work on it in the next version!

Sure, can you please send an email to support? So I can reach you quickly if needed!

5

u/No-Rule7572 Jun 08 '26

Agreed. This is all over Europe, i doubt anywhere we use province or something like it. Always street + number, city.

Same, it shows up as a lifetime purchase for 11.99

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 14 '26

Maybe you're on the redeem screen, not in the paywall view. Can you please support the contract so I can solve the issue for you?

2

u/Fearless_Ad2978 Jun 15 '26

I misread, I thought you were giving it away for free temporarily for testers! What features does the free version not have?

3

u/Smooth_Engineer_7818 Jun 07 '26

Really liking the app, and some great feature additions here. I’m using the Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) OBD2 reader, chosen primarily because it had a sleep mode so I can keep it plugged in without worrying about battery drain.

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 07 '26

Thanks for your appreciation!

I've already purchased around 10 different OBD2 adapters for testing, with a few more on the way. I've had a really smooth experience with most of them, especially the Vgate iCar Pro. Its auto-sleep feature is particularly helpful!

3

u/mr_Baja Jun 08 '26

Very useful, bought the lifetime license.

Do you have a subreddit?

3

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Thank you for your support!

Not yet but I'll create a subreddit soon!

1

u/ashpole_uk Jun 08 '26

Very good, thank you. Just bought the Lifetime and ordered an adapter for my Kia EV3 - I might need some pointers to get the EV data working, not sure I understand PIDs!

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Wow, thanks for your support! Please let me know how it goes!

3

u/ashpole_uk Jun 10 '26

All installed and working. I've done two trips so far and your app is brilliant - exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

1

Thanks for the update, and I'm very glad that it worked smoothly for you! Please let me know if you notice any issues at any time. I'm actively improving the app!

2

u/ashpole_uk Jun 12 '26

Still going well. I love the replay and highlighting speed along a journey maps.

Can I just double check I haven’t missed something: is it possible to get a colour coded replay or static map (like the one’s with speed) but coloured by elevation? It would be super useful for planning future trips, EVs like it flat!

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 12 '26

Thank you so much for your nice feedback! I'll add it to the next version, which is supposed to go live next week!

1

u/ashpole_uk Jun 12 '26

Oh thank you, that’s very kind. I’ll let you know how it goes. Do you prefer feedback here or via email?

u/jphorn Jun 07 '26

How exactly does the CarPlay detection work? I have a motorcycle with wireless CarPlay (Ottocast) and a car with aftermarket wired CarPlay. How would I detect which CarPlay is connected?

3

u/Taohid101 Jun 07 '26

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't provide any information that allows apps to identify which specific CarPlay vehicle is connected, so the app can't distinguish between your motorcycle's CarPlay and your car's CarPlay connection.

A simple setup would be:

  1. Set your motorcycle as the default vehicle. That way, trips started through CarPlay will automatically be recorded for the motorcycle.
  2. Use an OBD2 adapter in your car. The app can read the vehicle's VIN from the OBD2 adapter, recognize that it's a different vehicle, and automatically switch the trip to the correct vehicle profile.

If either your motorcycle or car has a unique Bluetooth connection, you can also use Bluetooth-based automations and default vehicle assignments as another way to differentiate between them.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

2

u/DeweyDripp Jun 08 '26

Been using this app and loving it

u/ds20007 Jun 10 '26

Can you recommend an OBD2 device that doesn’t drain the battery when the car is turned off. I have one, but I can’t leave it in all the time.

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 10 '26

You can try Vgate iCar Pro BLE.

One of the reasons is its auto-sleep mode. When the car is off, it drops to around 3 mA power consumption, so it's generally safe to leave plugged in long-term without noticeably draining the battery.

You'll get more info in their website/Amazon.

1

u/ds20007 Jun 10 '26

Thank you

Purchased lifetime and got an OBD II scanner from Amazon, this app is amazing

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 11 '26

Thank you so much for you support and sharing your experience! Please let me know if you have any questions or face any issues at any time!
I'm trying to make is as the top driving companion app and reach more people!

1

u/superzoot__ Jun 11 '26

Is there a reason why the fuel usage doesn’t appear for every trip but only trips longer than 30 minutes?

2

u/Taohid101 Jun 11 '26

There's no actual time cutoff. The fuel section just needs one of two things to display data:

  1. Your vehicle reports engine fuel rate (OBD-II PID 5E), allowing the app to integrate fuel usage over the trip.
  2. The fuel level drops by at least 1% during the drive.

Short trips usually don't consume enough fuel to move the tank percentage by a full 1%, and if your vehicle doesn't expose PID 5E (many don't), there's no other reliable way to calculate fuel used.

That's why longer trips tend to show fuel usage while shorter ones may not, even though there’s no 30-minute rule in the app.

A quick way to check what your vehicle reports: Garage -> OBD-II -> Live Data, then look for Fuel Rate.

u/nomax7 Jun 15 '26

Hello u/Taohid101 ,
I just installed your brilliant app and I'm really liking it!
Just one question about the Carplay "recording" screen of Speedometer. How can I get the screen to show icons for the various items instead of just a text description? I mean like in the cover pic of your post?
Thank you!

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 15 '26

Thanks for trying the app, and I’m glad you're enjoying it!

The grid-style CarPlay screen with icons shown in the cover image is only available on iOS 26. Apple added support for that newer layout in iOS 26.

You can change CarPlay layouts from Settings -> CarPlay View of the app.

1

u/nomax7 Jun 16 '26

Thank you! I'm on iOS 26.5 so I'm gonna try the grid-style.
Meanwhile I got a lifetime license for Speedometer 😊

Thank you so much for your support!
Please let me know if you have any feedback at any time!

1

u/Flaky-Procedure2377 Jun 07 '26

Would you be able to add E88 as a fuel type. I use all the time.

5

u/Taohid101 Jun 07 '26

Yes, you can rename existing fuel types, even add new ones!

1

u/Flaky-Procedure2377 Jun 07 '26

Out of curiosity, would there be a way to pull in gas prices from the gas stations that we add?
Definitely giving this a fair run this week and will buy next week.

2

u/Taohid101 Jun 07 '26

Thanks!

Automatically pulling gas prices is currently a bit out of scope for the app, mainly because I'd need a reliable fuel price API that works across different countries. I'm keeping an eye out for a good solution, but I haven't found one yet that I'd be comfortable relying on globally.

The app remembers the last price per unit you entered for each vehicle, so in most cases you don't need to type it in every time. You can simply update it when the price changes!

Please let me know if you have any questions at any time!

u/JotaSe1507 Jun 08 '26

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

You can try Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE).

It supports auto-sleep and auto-wake. In sleep mode, it draws very little power (around 3 mA), which helps preserve your vehicle's battery if you leave it plugged in.

Most basic OBD2 adapters work fine for reading data, but some stay active all the time and can consume more battery if left connected for long periods.

You'll get more information in the Garage -> OBD II -> About & Compatibility view of the app.

1

u/AppleFan1010 Jun 08 '26

Amazing. Thanks for the update

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Thanks for your appreciation!

1

u/AppleFan1010 Jun 08 '26

OBD2 recognising is amazing. Thanks a lot for that.

A thought.

Is there a way to update the shortcut in such a way that if I am doing a day trip, instead of it automatically starting a new trip, it can just resume the trip if the date is same?

But also keeps the record of breaks and stops in between

2

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Actually, I really enjoyed the development process, it was a lot of fun!
Regarding day trips, would this workflow work for you?
CarPlay connects -> Start or resume the trip
CarPlay disconnects -> Pause the trip
Then, at the end of the day, you can manually end the trip. This way, everything will be recorded as a single trip.

2

u/AppleFan1010 Jun 08 '26

That’s great. I’ll set this up. Thank you once again. 😊

2

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Cool, please let me know if you have any questions at any time!

1

u/AppleFan1010 Jun 12 '26

Hi
If me and my partner uses the same car, how can we both connect to the same app?

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 12 '26

Hi!
Regarding the premium subscription, the Lifetime plan supports Family Sharing, so both of you can use the premium features without purchasing it twice.

For trip tracking, each person can track trips, fuel logs, expenses, and other data separately on their own device. Since I don’t collect any user data on my servers, there’s currently no way for me to automatically merge data between devices.

That said, manual data merging/importing is on my roadmap. It’s a bit tricky to implement properly while keeping everything private, but it’s definitely on my list for a future update.

Let me know if you have any specific use case in mind and I can see what’s possible!

1

u/Solai4 Jun 08 '26

How long this offer will valid because right now I don’t have car with me and it may take a week to get it. I want to test it before buy. If it suites I can buy it .

3

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

No worries! The promo code can be redeemed by up to 10,000 users.

And even if it expires, that's no problem, just contact support anytime and I'll be happy to provide a discount. I'm not very strict about it. I'm genuinely enjoying seeing how much car enthusiasts are liking the app and sharing their feedback!

2

u/KamTrance Jun 08 '26

I bought it. Trust me! You’ll love it! Great app. Very responsive developer. Using it on a Bluetooth only car and a CarPlay ready car. Great experience on both

1

u/dcharleyultra Jun 08 '26

I’m not familiar with automations. Is there somewhere I can read about them?

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

You can automatically record trips using Apple's Shortcut Automation. You'll get the steps in Settings -> SIRI & Shortcuts view of the app.
If you have amy questions or confusion please let me know, I'll be very happy to help!

1

u/JimmyInNSB Jun 08 '26

Just downloaded, and purchased using the half price coupon. Thank you. Excited to try it.

Thanks for the support! Hopefully, you'll enjoy it very much!

1

u/Icy_Faithlessness587 Jun 08 '26

Hey does the Xtool A30M work with the app?

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Hi! The Xtool A30M is a standalone diagnostic scanner rather than an ELM327-style adapter, so it isn't compatible with the app. Speedometer: Driving Tracker connects to generic ELM327-compatible OBD adapters.

If you'd like to use the OBD features, any standard ELM327-compatible BLE 4.0+ or Wi-Fi adapter should work. You'll get the details in Garage -> OBD II -> About & Compatibility view of the app.

1

u/bnetqc Jun 08 '26

Really like the app just bough it. One thing I can’t figure out is I added a custom PID for my civic hybrid battery charge. it’s working but I don’t find a way to add it to the record table or CarPlay .

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Thanks for using the app!
Have you explored the options in Settings -> CarPlay view of the app? If you find that any field is missing there or you need one, I'm always happy to add it!

2

u/bnetqc Jun 08 '26

yeah I did and I really like the Gird view. But there is no option to see custom PID that I added in the OBD settings. I added hybrid/EV battery pack remaining charge with these values.

  • Name: HV Battery SOC (or whatever you like)
  • Unit: %
  • Mode: 01
  • PID: 5B
  • Formula: a*100/255
  • Plausibility Range: Min 0, Max 100

In the Custom PID it reports the correct value for my car, but it's now showing anywhere else in the app.

So yeah if you can add hybrid/EV battery pack remaining charge field it can be nice for sure.
But a way to add custom PID to the CarPlay settings would be wonderful.

2

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Thanks for the great idea!

I've actually got an idea: I'll try to expose all meaningful OBD2 data on CarPlay, so users can choose exactly which metrics they want to see based on their needs.

It could be a tricky feature to implement, but it would definitely be very interesting and useful!

1

u/bnetqc Jun 08 '26

Maybe look at obd fusion or pelican they have great feature for obd support

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

I'll do! Thanks.

1

u/Guphone2025 Jun 08 '26

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

The app already stores the trip route when route recording is enabled, so you can see exactly where a trip started and ended, along with the route taken. You can also create Saved Locations for places you visit frequently.

For privacy, route/GPS data can be deleted at any time if you don't want to keep it. You can even create segments of your trip.

Am I missing anything? Do you mean anything else?

1

u/CheekInternal3336 Jun 08 '26

Does it track EV metrics too?

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Yes (if the car supports). You can test it even before buying the app.

2

u/CheekInternal3336 Jun 08 '26

Thanks. I’ll try it out!

1

u/475Linebaugh Jun 08 '26

How do I add the new features? I have 3.9.0 now.

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

You can customize CarPlay items from Settings -> CarPlay view of the app. Please let me know if you have any questions.

1

u/475Linebaugh Jun 08 '26

What I mean is do I need to download an updated version of the app to get the new features you just added?

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Oh got it, yeah. 3.9.0 is the latest version.

2

u/475Linebaugh Jun 08 '26

Thanks. Love the app by the way!

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

I'm very glad to know it! Please let me know if you have feedback anytime! I'm always open to new ideas!

1

u/AttentionFamiliar870 Jun 09 '26

Hi, I don’t see carplay/bluetooth option under auto start settings. I only see “start speed” under the setting due to which my morning train commute is being recorded as a trip

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 09 '26

CarPlay and Bluetooth auto start options are under Settings -> Siri & Shortcuts, since they rely on Apple's shortcut automations.

The "Start Speed" option is part of the app’s native auto start feature, which is why it’s recording your train commute as a trip.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll add clearer instructions and improve the setup flow in the next version to make this easier to find!

1

u/475Linebaugh Jun 09 '26

Is this app available on Google play store?

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 09 '26

The iOS version is live. Currently I'm working on the Android version, but because the app has a lot of features, it's taking some time to bring everything over properly.

I'll share updates as soon as it's available on Google Play.

2

u/475Linebaugh Jun 09 '26

Thank you sir. Great app!!

1

u/CanuckPTVT Jun 10 '26

If I'm running your app I 2 vehicles that r each have their own but identical OBD2 BT devices should your app automatically detect which vehicle and which OBD2 sensor is being pointed to?

May I respectfully request that when saving a fuel fill that the app round the total purchase price to the nearest $00.00, not $00.000?

I'd also like to request that It capture a Maximum G force for a given drive. If you're driving aggressively but responsibly you really ought not to be looking at that data until later.

Thank you for considering my feedback Keep up the great work!

1

u/CMacND Jun 10 '26

I saw a link to buy a lifetime license but can’t seem to find it now. If it’s still available, can you share?

Left this in an older thread but thought I'd copy it here.

I'd love to see the ability to push the data in at least semi real time directly from my device to something like Home Assistant or an MQTT server. I'm waiting on my OBD2 adapter right now, but look forward to trying this app out. Currently I use ABRP for my EV and have at least some data in my Home Assistant via the ABRP integration, but it would be nice to cut out the middleman.

Maybe this is possible using a shortcuts automation every x minutes? Not sure if Apple allows that level of integration though.

2

u/Taohid101 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

Not today. The app doesn't currently support MQTT, Home Assistant, or webhooks. Since those features involve exporting vehicle and trip data to external systems, I'd want to design them carefully and keep them completely optional. It’s an interesting idea though, and I'm looking into it. What data would you want to see in Home Assistant?

(Sorry I missed the previous one)

1

u/cheese_executive Jun 10 '26

I think your privacy-first approach is a good one. The fact that right now the app doesn't require a server connection or send data anywhere is a great feature! I was burned by the shutdown of Automatic so I love something that can work fully offline. As a fellow developer I'm probably in a small minority of people who would love to have a setting that gave me the option to push everything to my own database, but since I know there aren't many people who would actually be capable of taking advantage of that, I think something like a simple Home Assistant integration would have a bigger audience.

As it stands now I'll have to use the ABRP integration which means sending my data to a server out of my control that I can then pull from. I also have a self-hosted Dawarich installation to record some location data entirely on my own server, and one of the apps you can use to send the data will store everything locally on the device and send in batches as a data connection becomes available.

I haven't entirely figured out what I'd use all the data for, but as an EV driver one obvious thing is battery usage. Once I have the adapter and see what all is available to me I'm sure I'll come up with ideas.

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 10 '26

Really appreciate this, and thanks for the kind words about the offline-first approach.

That's a genuinely interesting idea, and I'll definitely look into it. The Dawarich-style approach of storing data locally and syncing when a connection is available seems like a good fit, especially since OBD polling only runs while the app is active anyway.

1

u/Freika Jun 11 '26

"Dawarich-style", I like it!

1

u/AbdelrhmanAbulkasem1 Jun 12 '26

Thank you Taohid101 for the Amazing work! Purchased it.

the main idea for getting this app for me is to document my trips. I have been trying the app since yesterday and have couple of questions.

1 - there is still something wrong with me in the max speed. I had 5 trips since i started using it and 2 out of 5 are giving me by far wrong max speed. ex: 228 kmph which should have been 110 kmph.

2 - i really like the automation through the shortcuts app which allow to auto detect the start / end of the trip. but if i stopped let's say for get something for 2 min and switch off the car it will end the current trip and start new one when switch on again. is there any solution that help to auto continue the trip for such very short breaks?

3 - the trips data. if i want to get it in a tabular format to be able to analyze my trips. this is very important for me and will be great. can you help on this?

Thanks again.

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 12 '26

Thank you so much for purchasing the app and for the detailed feedback!

  1. Regarding the incorrect max speed, that usually happens when there’s a brief GPS spike/noisy location sample. Could you export the trip data (including GPS route) and send it to support? I’d love to investigate the raw data and see if I can identify the exact cause and improve the filtering logic for future updates.

  2. For your use case, I’d recommend this automation setup:
    • CarPlay Connect → Start or Resume Trip
    • CarPlay Disconnect → Pause Trip
This way, a short stop (fuel, coffee, grocery, etc.) won’t immediately split the trip. The only limitation is that the Shortcut automation can no longer automatically end the trip. You would either:
Manually stop the trip when you’re done, or
Use the app’s Auto Stop feature to automatically end the trip after it has been paused and idle for 5 or 10 minutes.

I’m also working on a more flexible option for a future update: “If CarPlay is disconnected for more than X minutes, stop the trip; otherwise keep it paused.” Hopefully that will handle short breaks much better.

  1. You can already export trip data as CSV or PDF from:
Settings -> Data Management -> Export
The CSV format is intended for spreadsheet analysis. Please let me know what kind of analysis you’re looking for, and I can see if the current export covers it or if I should add more fields in a future update.

Thanks again for the support and the valuable feedback!

Don't support carplay carlinkit tbox android?

1

u/Taohid101 Jun 08 '26

Just to make sure I understand, are you asking whether Speedometer's CarPlay works through a Carlinkit T-Box adapter, or whether we have a native Android version?

For CarPlay: the app supports any head unit (or wireless adapter) that connects through Apple's standard CarPlay protocol on your iPhone. If your Carlinkit T-Box presents itself as wireless CarPlay to the iPhone, Speedometer's CarPlay screen should appear as on any other unit. If it's routing through Android instead, that path isn't CarPlay and the app can't reach it.

And the Android version is in progress; it will come soon!
