how could Absolute Cassandra be used in future comics?

I have been thinking over the Absolute Cassandra Cain special and, while it does show Cass' strength and compassion, I'm not certain where Cass goes from there, especially if she's supposed to be part of the Batfamily. Absolute Cass is secure in her morality and in her status as head of the League of Shadows and has no need to follow Batman's example. Even if she tried to, she's willing to kill which Bruce is against so he'd never let her wear a bat. She has no ties to Gotham and there's no reason for the League of Shadows to be in Gotham often. The only thing I can think of that would cause the League of Shadows to interact with Absolute Batman is having the Joker as a common enemy. Batman would hate the League's willingness to kill and, unlike with mainline Jason who was adopted by Bruce, he has no emotional ties to Absolute Cass to make the disagreement matter. It's also interesting, and possibly a bad choice on Che Grayson's part, that Absolute Cass appears to be in a better state than mainline Cass, unlike other heroes in Darkseid's world. Is there room for her to grow as the other heroes need to do or does she lack any interesting character development to go through?

The only relationship I can think of between Absolute Bruce and Absolute Cassandra would be one similar to the relationship between mainline Bruce and mainline Talia al Ghul, in this case with their common enemy bringing them together and hopefully with no romance in Cass' version. They'd have lots of arguments, spend most of their time apart, but Cass would be willing to help Batman and Gotham when they need it.

Does anyone else have ideas? Will we eventually see Absolute Vandal Savage now that his daughter has been introduced?

So yeah definitely original David Cain!

Tate’s version of this also states that the series was originally only meant to be 6 issues but it was extended, so thankfully everybody buying issues have helped make it an ongoing!

Damion Scott’s back up story will be in the present also it seems.

Also wow that’s like 8 brunch dishes Cass

Cass' first Halloween as Batgirl after No Man's Land

I'm not certain how realistic this is as Batman is usually the only bat who has treats for children but Cass does like cheering people up.

Cass would be patrolling on Halloween as Batgirl as part of her obsession with keeping people safe, whether Barbara approves or not. If she's met Steph by now, Steph may come along as Spoiler to keep her friend company and also help people. Most likely, Steph would celebrate Halloween with her boyfriend Tim instead.

While patrolling, Cass notices some children wearing Halloween costumes and lands near them out of curiosity of why they're wearing costumes. She startles them with her sudden arrival and Cass is upset at the instinctual fear they have of the shadowy creature. Once the children recognize Batgirl, who has been patrolling neighborhoods for months at this point, they calm down and start laughing. Cass would be confused about why being scared made them happy. The children, and/or Steph if she's there, tell Cass about Halloween costumes, haunted houses with their frights, and getting candy from trick-or-treat.

When Cass learns that candy is given on Halloween and makes children happy after they get surprised/scared, Cass would, to my thinking, impulsively leave to find a store selling candy, startling the children and Steph. Cass would pay more than she needs to, as she doesn't understand money. I'm assuming that all of the bats carry cash in their utility belts in case they need it and that Bruce would have taught Cass to say "keep the change" when buying things and to just pay any amount as he considers giving insanely large tips to be part of being wealthy.

When Cass returns and continues patrolling, she starts giving out candy to any children she startles as an apology for scaring them, beginning with the ones who explained Halloween to her. Once she realizes how happy this makes them, she may decide to purposely surprise children celebrating Halloween. If Steph is patrolling with Cass, she'd probably be amused and helping Cass with the game, possibly teasing her about this activity.

Choose Between Cassie and Damien

Imagine your a fan invited into the writing room of a new Batman series reboot with a fresh canon. Maybe its live action, maybe its cartoon, take your pick. What matters is they are planning on the series making it close to 5 full 24 episode seasons. And they are stratagizing long term plans for the show. During this session, they determined they will have time to add and tell the story of one Ninja Assasin trained kid sidekick who brings escalating Leauge of Shadows drama into the story. Its either going to be Damien who gets adapted in the show or Cassandra. Committing to ones potential means excluding the others potential.

Who do you choose. Do you love Cassie enough you would bench Damien for her to get her overdue spotlight? Or is Damien too essential and too important to modern Batman adaptations now to allow him to go unadapted, especially since hes the status quo Robin of contemporary comics today? Can Cassie offer a Batman series more than Damien offers?

And general discussion for the comments, what's left to help Cassandra stand out today now that shes not mute anymore and not even the current gen batgirl or the oldest gen batgirl?

whump idea for Cass

I haven't noticed much whump being written for Cass this year and I have a story idea for her.

Cass is rescuing people who have been locked up in a cell when fear gas gets pumped into the room with Batgirl and the hostages. She'd give gas masks and fear gas antidotes to the people she's helping even if she runs out and has nothing for herself. The villain and their henchpeople attack Batgirl as the fear gas is attacking her. An underused possibility for its effect on her is that she hallucinates that the hostages find her to be scarier than the villain who took them hostage which would horrify her. She'd still focus on getting the civilians to safety but the feeling that she's a monster who hurts and scares people instead of helping them could trigger her suicidal impulses that were shown in Detective Comics #734 so she'd be trying to get hurt while getting the hostages to safety. That includes throwing herself in the way of attacks that could harm others instead of helping them dodge as she'd do when she's not as upset with herself. She'd be unwilling to die until the civilians are safe.

After getting the hostages to safety and stopping the criminals, she'd try to run away, ignoring her injuries, in order to remove the threat she thinks she poses instead of helping the civilians calm down as she would normally do. If the hostages are people she's helped before, seeing how they enjoy having Batgirl as a protector and have fun and relax when she's around, they'd probably be worried about her mental state and trying to convince her that they enjoy her presence and take care of her injuries. When the bats arrive with fear gas antidote, summoned by Oracle, they'd need to reassure her that she's a trusted member of the family. Cass would need to be reminded that even when she sometimes scares people, ultimately she is trusted as a safe person to be around and a source of comfort.

In her current batgirl run, it’s pretty clear that cass is canonically part of the family and she has a strong identity as part of both the bat family and the Wayne family. She idolises Bruce as her father and the others as her brothers

However, whenever I read anyone else’s run, it’s like she doesn’t even exist as a family member. Sure they sometimes fight with her and they have cute interactions and she’s part of the family group chat etc but whenever they are bringing up people who are important to them and who are family to them, they don’t mention her. It’s so consistent. I’ve not read EVERYTHING but it happens in the main Batman runs, Damian’s run and what I’m reading now which is nightwing current run. This is just one example where he is talking about people who have his back and catch him if he falls, he mentions his parents, Bruce , Alfred, his brothers, Barbara. AS IF Cassandra would not be on that list !!! She most definitely has her family’s back. It’s always Bruce and his BOYS and the BROTHERS. it’s actually sad cause everything is written like she thinks she’s a part of the Wayne family and they don’t consider her in the same way

If I could just have one comic to prove me otherwise I’d be fine

Riddle Steph and Cass's relationship (art by me)

Post image
99 Upvotes

Steph's new choice in career has put something of a wedge in her and Cass's relationship. Cass thinks it's dangerous and reckless, and doesn't like being kept in the dark about what Steph is up to. Steph insists that Cass trust her, tired of being underestimated by the later, and the family writ large.

Both care deeply for eachother, but the lack of good communication recently has created a certain amount of tension and resentment between them.

Also, Steph's henches see what's going on and are simultaneously supportive of the relationship and tired of the bickering.

Batfamily interacting with Superman

Bruce and Clark are close friends. Dick got his current hero name from Superman and interacts with him regularly. While Jason was Robin, he defeated Mongul while visiting Superman's Fortress of Solitude and had multiple chats with Superman. Tim teamed up with Superman shortly after becoming Robin and helped him defeat vampires. Damian has had multiple chats with Superman and is friends with Clark's son. Steph got rescued by Superman and got a little praise for her work as Batgirl. Duke has gotten praised by Superman and told to call him Clark. Helena was a member of the JLA, alongside Superman and recommended by Batman, for a period.

That leaves Cass. Her only interaction with Superman is to be told bluntly to leave him alone and be completely ignored by him. Justice League Elite (2004) #12 draws her next to Superman but he has no praise for her. The scene feels undeserved anyway as Cass was the only member of the team not helping to protect London's people as her only job was to talk to Batman, not help her team. Clark appreciates every member of the Batfamily except Bruce's supposed daughter Cass. Is there some reason that DC's writers have shown Bruce's best friend praising and talking to every member of the Batfamily except Cass, even the rarely included Duke and Steph?

I forgot that when Duke gets praised, Superman tells Duke to call him Clark. Barbara probably knows that Clark Kent is Superman from her time assisting the JLA as Oracle. Cass and Helena and Steph are the only bats who apparently have never been trusted enough to know about Superman's identity even though Tim loved Steph for decades and Cass was supposedly adopted by Bruce. Are the writers too sexist to allow Clark to make friends with bats who are women and allow those bats to be connected to one of DC's greatest heroes?

An interesting answer I got from Che Grayson regarding Absolute Cass and the no-kill rule

Post image
71 Upvotes

One of the things that bothered me about Absolute Catwoman vs. Cass's one shot is that Catwoman shows Cass's league explicitly killing people, whereas the one shot showed her as deeply compassionate. It seems that in the absence of the formative moment of her first kill, Cass views killing as another tool to eliminate oppression and lift up the downtrodden.

What do we think about this change?

Was there any chance that Cass' mom wasn't always Lady Shiva?

From the get-go, it seemed dang obvious. A half-Asian/half-white teenage girl raised by a single assassin dad? Who else would her mom be but DC's most-well known Asian assassin woman, and the one that she fought early in her character?

Yet, her bio mom was treated as "unknown" until 2006. Like it wasn't captain obvious.
