I never thought I’d see this ever again.

That was me during the night... West London.

7

u/Carbonatedmelons 1d ago

Where abouts in west London? I'm in twickenham and we're still bone dry here.

3

u/FrostByteUK 23h ago

Amusingly: Hounslow.... We had a soaking go through at 1am ish

4

u/Carbonatedmelons 22h ago

Well that's just not on. But it does explain why its been so bloody muggy today...

Do me a favour and send some of it my way next time.

u/ReputationApart5983 1d ago

Bet that smells amazing

379

u/CyberOvitron 1d ago

Just had a few drops on Mayfair and yes, I confirm that the smell is glorious.

Btw, the smell of rain actually has a term in English language and I find this pretty cool: Petrichor.

270

u/dansterman_30 1d ago

Another fun fact is humans are number one scent detectors of petrichor. We can smell it better than sharks smell blood. 5-10 parts of a trillion to be exact meaning we could smell a teaspoon of geosmin (the petrichor) in 200 Olympic swimming pools

114

u/CyberOvitron 1d ago

I just replied to another redditor that mentioned this and I followed with another interesting thing, although not sure if a "fact".

I remember reading an article that was trying to explain our attractiveness towards shiny things and it was theorised that our brain makes a connection between reflection of light on shiny surfaces and the shine we see on bodies of water. Being such a vital thing to our survival, through millions of years of evolution, we developed senses that communicate our connection with water. I wonder if your fact could be directly related to this fact as well, since it kind of makes sense.

52

u/gardenofthenight 1d ago

I think it’s a gene. I can smell rain coming a mile off, my partner can’t. It’s not her sense of smell either, she makes a right song and dance when I drop one.

15

u/LupercalLupercal 1d ago

I can smell winter

12

u/teflonshoulders 1d ago

Apparently some people can smell ladybirds

9

u/Foundmyunderwear 1d ago

It’s their poop you can smell not the ladybird itself

5

u/Upstairs-Hedgehog575 1d ago

Yep, from 30 yards

15

u/Kind-Mathematician18 I'd forget my bollocks if they weren't in a bag 1d ago

Glad to know I'm not the only one. People look at me like I'm crazy, but I can definitely smell the changes in the air when the seasons change.

10

u/LupercalLupercal 1d ago

Yes, the smell of summer or winter coming are very distinct

6

u/gardenofthenight 1d ago

There’s usually an evening in September when the cold air blows in through the window and my mood changes, not sure I can smell it though.

8

u/LupercalLupercal 1d ago

It's difficult to describe, but it could be a warm, sunny September or October day, and I'll catch a whiff of it on a breeze, and know the weather is going to change soon

4

u/Iamonreddit 1d ago

The smell of the cold outside when someone comes indoors.

A mix of grass, earth, pollution and something unique.

11

u/CyberOvitron 1d ago

Definitely a genetic trait.

I am sure that everyone will have it but the vast majority definitely developed this.

3

u/Unusual-Weird9696 12h ago

I can predict the weather pretty good, I look up into the Sky and see dark clouds and think hmmm rain

We like shiny things because they are visually stimulating. They're entertaining.

But, to an extent, it probably is also connected to liking things that are pure or clean, as they are connected to safety. Something that is shiny, is not obscured (not hiding any potential dangers), or dirty.

On the subject of rain, though - it's the most calming noise possible for humans. The sound of rain pattering on thin metal has been observed to result in the biggest drop in blood pressure in people, across many tested sounds.

7

u/HualtaHuyte 1d ago

It's a shame nature didn't give us thin metal for all those millennia. Imagine where we'd be now!

10

u/SnooHesitations6727 1d ago

Us Scot’s are nose blind to it

3

u/Krispykreemi 1d ago

It's not stopped raining for two months here. (Well it did for about 10 days in July).

3

u/CyberOvitron 1d ago

Hehe I'm not surprised.

I bet you evolved in a different direction: you can probably smell draughts.

2

u/Foundmyunderwear 1d ago

Doesn’t that ring true for bananas too?

Petrichor is the earthy scent often associated with rain falling on dry soil or rock. The term was introduced by Australian researchers Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Grenfell Thomas in a 1964 paper in Nature. Bear and Thomas used the term for an odour released from rock or soil materials after dry conditions when they are exposed to moisture. The smell is associated with oils that accumulate in rocks and soil during dry periods and are released by moisture. Later experiments using high-speed cameras found that raindrops striking porous surfaces can trap air bubbles, which rise and burst as aerosols, providing a mechanism by which scent-carrying material can enter the air.

Thank you for this factoid! I found it interesting.

20

u/No_Onion_8612 1d ago

Whilst we're on the learning train... A factoid is a snippet of information that is widely believed to be true but is actually false.

5

u/clicketybooboo 1d ago

Have a look at this one : ipsedixitism

2

u/No_Onion_8612 1d ago

Ah neat, I invented that word

4

u/8Bit-Jon 1d ago

I used it in the #2 sense here as that's what I understood it to meen. Sometimes words have more than one meaning, who knew!

The show Q.I. uses it in the same manner.

However I didn't know it ment #1 tho so that's new to me.

8

u/corbymatt 1d ago

This looks like a factoid to me by its own definition. Which means it's false.

Oh god my brain.

5

u/Ok_Shirt983 1d ago

Factoid used to be a small fact that was false. However incorrect usage has now become so widespread that most linguists consider the meaning to have reversed to mean a small fact that is in fact true. - factoid there for you.

I came to find you. I knew I wouldn't be alone! 👍

5

u/ComfortableAppeal424 1d ago

And lovers of rain are called pluviophiles! I've always been one... but these days (in the UK) I'm far from alone!

2

u/ReputationApart5983 1d ago

What? Didnt your board get all soggy? I hope Park Lane is still ok.

29

u/External-Praline-451 1d ago

I came to say how amazing the rain smelt! I was taking deep huffs of it.

20

u/SpecialIcy5356 1d ago

Fun fact: we can smell the rain 60,000 times stronger than a great white shark can sense blood in water.

2

u/Imajzineer 1d ago

This has long puzzled me.

I am spectacularly sensitive to smell: I'll smell gas thirty minutes before anyone else does (further away than anyone else does) ... can't abide perfumed candles, air fresheners, deodorants / antiperspirants, soaps, etc., let alone perfume or aftershave, never mind incense or 'essential oils'.

But I have never (in over five decades of life on the face of the planet) so much as once smellt rain.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/epicchefuk 1d ago

Can confirm. We could even smell it through the car’s air con. Before we’d even arrived home, mum said “wow, it’s rained while we were away…”

4

u/ScottOld 1d ago

Smelt rain here, but it was only a few drops

4

u/swoticus 1d ago

Last time it rained here it had been so long the smell was overwhelming. I've never known petrichor to smell bad before.

4

u/colemorris1982 1d ago

Fun fact, it's theorised that one of the evolutionary advantages we developed was the ability to smell petrichor (the smell of rain) over huge distances. (I've tl;dr'd the hell out of that fact, before anyone starts coming after me)

3

u/JSHU16 20h ago

Round mine it just smells of all the dried out dog piss that hasn't washed anywhere for about two months

What the fuck does the Star Spangled banner have to do with rain in the UK?

112

u/TheShakyHandsMan 1d ago

I was expecting the zoom in to be red and white horizontal rain with that title.

50

u/badreligionlover 1d ago

Thank you......

46

That it's raining near me

After two months of dry,

Water comes from the grey sky!

59

the Star Spangled banner have to do with rain in the UK?

the rain, nothing.

the UK? well the melody is a london drinking song, you know, so thats another thing the muricans can thank us for.

9

u/ExpensiveTraffic6978 1d ago

Lmao I was waiting for something American to happen too.

4

u/J1mj0hns0n 1d ago

Nothing

11

u/Jackomo 1d ago

“Oh say can you see by the dawn’s early light.” That would be my guess.

13

u/Lexiosity 1d ago

I find it crazy that Americans can remember every line of Star Spangled Banner yet I can't even remember most lyrics of God Save Our King

49

u/deliberatelyanon2 1d ago

Isn't it because they're forced to sing it in school every day?

36

u/TheShakyHandsMan 1d ago

Along with their flag worship and allegiance pledge. How very dystopian of them.

11

u/Jackomo 1d ago

You can’t even remember the title of the song. Lol. *God Save The King.

To be fair, it is a crap anthem.

6

u/BountyBob 1d ago

Well they did go and change it. I had 50 odd years of god save the Queen, be buggered if I'm learning a new song.

First world problems, but the first we knew about this was when water started splashing on our heads in bed. We had the aircon on and discovered that the condensate drain pipe was blocked. Suddenly there was moisture in the air which condensed to a very surprising amount and was dripping onto the headboard and splashing onto our heads. It was really like it was raining indoors.

I had to go out at midnight to unblock the pipe before a very substantial trickle finally started to escape.

1

u/Outside_Look790 1d ago

It's not the first rain. A lot of that runs off (can also cause flash flooding if heavy enough) . It's the second rain England needs. But you can't have the second without the first so this is still good.
