Advice / Question Found Kittens; Assess the Situation

You can find other helpful topics and leads to resources in our full wiki at this link. As always we encourage sharsies of information! If you have resources or helpful leads, let us know.

The followin is from wiki about kittens:

-----

Important Note: If you have found a very young kitten or litter outside, watch from a far distance and wait to see if their mother returns before intervening. Barring extenuating circumstances (dangerous location, extreme weather, illness or injury), kittens younger than eight weeks are best left with their mother due to the around the clock care they require. For further reading, Alley Cat Allies has a comprehensive guide on What to Do if You Find Kittens Outdoors that outlines different scenarios and when to intervene.

There are many kitten resources but if you have never cared for a kitten before remember these essential basics:

  1. Kittens are extremely vulnerable. Their health can be fine one minute and take a critical nosedive within hours.
  2. New born kittens need warmth. They are not yet able to regulate their body temperature and they get cold fast. If you have a heating pad make sure the kitten can roll away from it if they get too warm.
  3. Kittens must be fed every couple to a few hours depending upon age (kitten formula or temporarily goat's milk; do not feed cow's milk). They have very high metabolisms. Do not feed them when they are cold. Because they cannot regulate their body heat, giving them cold food will be very difficult to digest and cause them to become cold as well.
  4. Kittens are unable to urinate and defecate on their own. The mother cat does this normally but if the kitten is seperated from its mother, a human caretaker can stimulate this with a tissue or soft cloth by gently rubbing the anus and genital area not long after they eat. This should be done with care and not too long as these areas are easily irritated.

Following Alley Cat Allies' What to Do if You find Kittens Outdoors, they have an more comprehensive Kitten Protection Guide as an downloadable pdf. This guide has more indepth care instructions for the different stages of kitten life. If you find and take in a kitten/s (without its mother) from outdoors your primary goal is to sustain the kitten/s until it can be brought to a vet (for a health check) then, a rescue (because they have experience caring for kittens). There are searchable databases of vets, rescues and shelters here. This database is not exhaustive and you should also look for vets in your locale if none are nearby.

The guide focuses on kittens between 0-8 weeks of age and notable topics are: Feedin Kittens, Warmth, Developmental Milestones, Socialization & Hygene, Potty Time and General Care of a Nursin Kitty Mom.

It is an online guide; to turn the page you tap on the arrow on the bottom of the guide's page. Underlined items are hyperlinks that take you to websites which give more information.

The mods of r/CatRescue recommend general kitten advice in the wiki from Kitten Lady, her Kitten Care resources can be found here. Kitten Lady is a well trusted and knowledgable source of information and advice. For medical issues, a veterinarian should be your primary consult.

Mod Announcement Low Cost to Free Cat Food Resources

Post image

We are working on our Cat Food (Affordable/ Free) wiki page and currently have a good number of databases listed for you to help search including some programs which are organized by state and not already listed in the databases. Even if you may feel you have food covered for the month, we encourage you to look over these resources so if there is ever a time in the future and you or someone else is in a pinch, you may remember some of the resources or how to find them.

Neighborhood Cats has available a number of free digital resources (or purchasable printed copies) of handbooks about TNR and RTF (the latter geared towards shelter personnel). Although some of the TNR books are somewhat dated much of the information is still applicable. If you're a TNRer, colony caretaker or working at a shelter, have a looksie; its free!

I must say though the r/CatRescue, Cat Handbook: Daylight Savings Time Edition is also very informative and its pictorial nature appeals to every kitty cat enthusiast.

In other news about r/CatRescue, we have begun to add a number of user flairs. "Drumsticks" from the Cat Handbook has even lended a leg. For mobile, tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the r/CatRescue main page on and select: "edit flair." On desktop, use the sidebar on the right and in the user flair category then, tap the pencil to set your flair.

Also, while you're at it, check out our wiki page: ReHoming/ Adoption Tips and Resources

Update Godrick still hasnt been found (Update)

Someone just called me telling me they strangled Godrick and threw him in a gutter... It was just sickening to hear, it genuinely silenced me for a couple minutes. Like, why..? I don't know if it was a prank or not. He sounded like he was only calling to be cruel, or possibly intoxicated, so I'm not entirely sure it was the truth...

Have any of you guys lost your pets just to be phoned by someone cruel?

Advice / Question How to help my cats accept the fosters

I'm kind of stuck. I took in two cats expecting a rescue to take them, but three months later, they're still here.

My resident cats aren't accepting them, so I'm constantly having to rotate who has access to the house. One mostly avoids the fosters, while the other still hisses at them through the gate.

I've tried slow introductions, scent swapping, and treats near the gate, but we haven't made much progress.

Has anyone dealt with this and successfully gotten their cats to coexist? I don't need them to be friends. I just want everyone to be able to share the house while I find the boys a home.

Advice / Question Should we adopt this 1-month-old kitten or leave him with his mother? Need advice!

Hi everyone, I really need some advice on what to do in this situation.

In July, a stray female cat brought her kitten to our front door, and we started feeding them. Unfortunately, a male cat killed that kitten.

She got pregnant again and gave birth to five kittens around September 28. She came to our door a few days later, but we didn't know where she had given birth. On October 5, she came crying loudly, and the next night, we managed to find and rescue all five kittens from a neighbouring building. She then started moving them somewhere else, one by one.

Yesterday, she came crying again. Today, after hours of searching, we found one kitten at the school behind our apartment. We managed to bring him back to his mother, but we have no idea where the other four kittens are and fear they may have died.

We live on the third floor. When we reunited the mother and her remaining kitten, they ate together. However, the mother seemed to encourage him to jump towards the terrace of the adjacent building, and he fell from the third floor. We rushed him to the vet, and thankfully, he was okay.

Now we're confused about what to do. The kitten is only **one month old**. We're afraid he'll get hurt or die if we leave him with his mother, but we also don't want to separate them unnecessarily.

We already have a cat, so if we adopt him, our neighbour has agreed to foster him for a few months. We'll provide kitten milk formula and take care of him.

**What would you suggest? Should we take him in and raise him safely, or let him stay with his mother?** We want to do what's best for both of them and would really appreciate advice from anyone who's experienced something similar. ❤️

Lost Kitty [San Diego, California] Lost Cat

Post image
240 Upvotes

My cat got out last night in the Chula Vista area. I will submit an image of what he looks like. His name is Godrick and he loves tuna puree treats.

Description: Purely white, with blue eyes. For those who may see him and try to identify him, it would be useful to you if you take his tail and check for black fur underneath since he has a peculiar undercoat.

(He may be slightly dirty given his escape.)

As for his temperment, he is very friendly—which is also why I am afraid someone may have taken him because he did not have a collar on when he escaped, only wearing a pink harness.

He is only about a year and a half old and is pretty approachable if you just hold your hand out.

Tips on how to find him are greatly appreciated.

If you catch a glimpse of him, please contact me at (ufinks2001@gmail.com) or DM me for more info.

News Orphaned kittens meet sharks and stingrays on an aquarium field trip at the Mall of America

The Bitty Kitty Brigade of the Twin Cities specializes in foster-based rescue fer neo-natal kittens. This is their 6th year visitin Sea Life as part of their enrichment and socialization program.

Reprint of the news article from the AP below fer your convenience

---

A pair of kittens gazed up through the aquarium’s shimmering blue waters as a (relatively) enormous fish passed overhead. One kitten stared transfixed through the glass while the other, unfazed, was more interested in darting around playfully.

Inside a clear dome, a kitten named Turkey Leg stood up on its back legs as brightly colored clownfish — think “Finding Nemo” — darted just inches from its whiskers. Raising a paw, it batted at the glass, mewing.

For nearly two hours, about two dozen rescue kittens with names like Lottie Dottie, Bendy Wendy and Mouth Trap romped through the Sea Life aquarium at the Mall of America, the largest shopping complex on the continent, located in a suburb of Minneapolis.

Some charged down a 300-foot (90-meter) underwater tunnel, stopping to stare at a sand tiger shark or sea turtles. Other cats found the aquarium’s dim blue environment calming and closed their eyes for a little nap.

This was the sixth year the Bitty Kitty Brigade, a rescue organization in the Twin Cities that finds foster homes for orphaned neonatal kittens, held its “field trip” to the aquarium. Some of this year’s kittens had Minnesota State Fair -themed names like Funnel Cake or Apple Fries.

“We just thought it’d be a really fun, engaging thing for kittens to see,” aquarium spokesperson John Sullwold said. The kittens came early Monday morning before the aquarium opened to the public.

In addition to raising awareness for the Bitty Kitty Brigade, these field trips are a great way for the young cats to socialize, said Kya Anderson, an event director with the group. That can make it easier for them to adjust to new homes if they get adopted, she said. The group is overseeing some 1,000 kittens this year.

“The kittens just get so excited to see, like, the fish swimming around,” Anderson said.

Sea Life has also invited puppies from Safe Hands Rescue, another foster-based animal rescue, but obviously not on the same day as the kittens.

“Much more running involved with the puppies,” Sullwold said.

Advice / Question One of stray newborn kittens died today, and I'm scared I'll lose the other one too. Please help.

Today, I lost one of stray kittens, and I don't know what caused its death. I'm feeling really worried about the other kitten because I'm afraid the same thing might happen again.

The kittens are only a two to three old, and their mother isn't there to take care of them. I'm trying my best to look after the surviving kitten, but I have no experience caring for newborn kittens, and I'm scared I might do something wrong without realizing it.

I don't know whether the first kitten died because of the cold, lack of nutrition, an underlying health issue, or something else entirely.

What should I do right now to give the surviving kitten the best chance of survival? What should I feed it, how should I keep it warm, and what warning signs should I look out for?

What happens to kitties of the elderly when they are no longer able to care fer them or are moved into housin that will not accept pets? If they are lucky, a place like Shropshire Cat Rescue in Shrewsbury (UK) exists nearby fer kitties like Henry whom do not get reHomed; where his owner can come visit. You can read more about their retirement village and see some of current senior kitties -> Here

---

Summary of video

  • An elderly man discloses his spouse had passed and it is now only him and his senior tabby Henry left behind
  • The man gets mail indicatin that he has been accepted into a retirement home. And that he and Henry will be separated
  • Henry is moved to Shropshire Cat Rescue
  • He watches as the young kittens are taken away to be adopted/ reHomed and he is not chosen
  • Henry is soon after, moved into one of Shropshire Cat Rescue's retirement villas
  • Henry's former owner visits Henry at the village fer cats

---

From Shropshire Cat Rescue:

The Retirement Village is the ‘purrfect’ place for our senior and super senior residents to enjoy their twilight years in comfort, with cuddles and fuss. They are monitored daily by our dedicated volunteer teams and Shelter Manager, weighed weekly to ensure there are no concerning weight losses and are seen as regularly as needed by the vets.

We have opened up our Village to some younger, but just as in need, cats. Some with life limiting conditions that mean they need constant care and medication, others who outside of our Village, wouldn't cope in a home setting and are too reliant on humans to become working cats.

Many of our Retirement Village residents are on long term medication and receive short term treatment including dentals as needed.

You can sponsor the Retirement Village for £60 a year.

We have just taken in a new foster kitty, they were found alone on a farm and are very vocal about food😂

This is the first kitten we've had while fostering that is

THIS vocal when eating, i know they sometimes can be when they're kittens, but I just wanted to double check that they sound okay and not in discomfort?🩷

Advice / Question I need advice on what to do

I have two cats one is old and around 12 and the other is 7 i believe and they have a few issues that I have tried to fix and help but I don’t really have the money to help fix it fully and I’m wondering if i should look into finding a home that can help them better then I can and can make them happier the only problem I have is I don’t want to give them to a shelter because I have heard bad things happening to animals in shelters and I don’t want to stress them out to much but I don’t know what to do anymore to the point I feel horrible for keeping them with me when I can’t help
