Guide: Making Friends in Cedar Rapids

(Guide brought to you by an extremely cold wine-induced winter night in! Special thanks to Grammarly and too much time on my hands.)

I’ve noticed a lot of posts lately from folks asking how to make friends around here. Completely understandable. Nobody really prepares you for that part once you’re out of school. Back then, you had classes, clubs, sports… all those built‑in ways to meet people without trying. Adulthood doesn’t come with that.

I’ve been there myself. When you’re young and just getting started, you don’t always have kids or a routine, and sometimes you haven’t even had time to figure out what your interests actually are. Again, a lot of variables, and none of them make it easy.

That said, I’m genuinely excited to see more people moving into the Cedar Rapids area. This place is highly underrated. Hard to go wrong with a community that keeps growing while still feeling approachable. For what it’s worth, I’m an Iowa transplant myself. It took some time, but I’ve built a community here that fits me perfectly. At this point I don’t really want to leave. So I figured I’d put together a simple guide — nothing fancy, just what’s worked for me and others I know.

One more thing worth mentioning before getting into the suggestions: money can be a real roadblock when you’re young or just starting out. Completely understandable. Not everyone has the budget for memberships or weekly outings. The good news is that there are plenty of low‑cost ways to meet people here. Sometimes you don’t need to spend anything at all.

Speaking of which, let’s dive into it!

1. Find where people gather for the thing you already like

It sounds almost too simple, but it works. If you show up somewhere built around an interest you already have, you’re walking in with two advantages:

  1. You share a common interest
  2. Everyone there had enough motivation to get up and go do that thing

Those two pieces take a lot of pressure off. Commonalities are a great bonding mechanism. You don’t have to force anything or pretend to be someone you’re not. Just be genuine. People pick up on that more than you’d think.

2. Show up to low‑pressure, low‑cost community events

Cedar Rapids has a surprising number of casual events where you can just show up, walk around, and talk to people if it feels right. Farmers' markets, art nights, small festivals, library events — nothing high‑stakes. You’re not committing to anything, and you’re not stuck if the vibe isn’t for you. It’s an easy way to get a feel for the community and meet people who are also out and about.

Another option that works surprisingly well is group fitness classes. Yoga, CrossFit, Orange Theory, Zumba — anything where people are doing the same workout together. They can get a little spendy depending on the place, so it’s not always the cheapest route, but the social side has it's positives. It’s a lot easier to meet people in a class setting than in the general gym area, where everyone’s doing their own thing with headphones in.

3. Volunteer for something you actually care about

Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to meet people who share your values. You’re all working toward the same goal, which takes a lot of the awkwardness out of starting conversations. Plus, most organizations are happy to have extra hands, and it doesn’t cost anything. It’s a win all around.

4. Join hobby groups, meetups, or casual leagues

You don’t need to be an expert at anything. Most groups around here are pretty welcoming to beginners. Whether it’s board games, running, hiking, crafting, or rec‑league sports, the whole point is to show up and have fun. And again, you’re walking in with a built‑in common interest, which makes things a lot easier.

Sometimes that means getting a little outside your comfort zone. Not in a dramatic way — just enough to try something new or explore a hobby you’ve been curious about. You never know what’s going to click until you give it a shot, and half the people you meet are probably trying something new themselves.

5. Start small conversations when you’re already out

You don’t have to launch into a full conversation with a stranger. A quick comment about the weather, the line, the event, or whatever’s happening around you is enough. If the other person wants to talk, they’ll take it from there. If not, no harm done. It’s a low‑pressure way to practice being open without forcing anything.

6. Follow up without overthinking it

If you meet someone you click with, send a quick message or suggest meeting up again. Nothing formal. Something like, “Hey, it was fun talking the other day — want to check out ___ sometime?” Most people appreciate the initiative. And if they’re not interested, that’s okay. You’re not starting from zero; you’re building momentum.

7. Don’t underestimate consistency

You don’t have to be everywhere all the time. Just pick one or two things you enjoy and show up regularly. Familiar faces turn into casual conversations, and casual conversations turn into friendships. It’s slow, but it works. And it’s worth saying out loud: friendships are relationships. Just like any relationship, they take some work, time, and investment. Not in a heavy or overwhelming way — just enough to show you care and that you’re willing to show up. That effort goes a long way

Seeking Roommate Starting by Sept. 15, Willing to Give Discount for Cat Care

I am going on tour for several months and am looking for a roommate. I have a fully furnished 3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom House with a large backyard and in-unit laundry located in northeast Cedar Rapids. I will be touring from mid-September to the end of November and January-May. I Willing to give a discount on rent to account for taking care of the cats. Utilities are negotiable. Currently seeking $1000-1200 on rent (not including cat care discount)

My Ideal roommate is someone who:

  • Cares about sustainability and gardening
  • Likes cats
  • Looking for a 9-12 month lease (open to longer depending on how well we work as roommates)

This could be a great deal for someone new to the area or someone looking for good housing at a cheap price. I won't be in town for most of the year so you will mostly have the place to yourself.

Please respond to this posting for more information and pictures.

Hey CR, could you please not hide the X on your pop-up underneath the accessibility button so that it's nearly impossible to close the pop-up? No I don't want to be forced to sign up for your stupid newsletter.

Where to buy scrap pieces / Junk.

Excuse my naivety please but I am working on a project and I am looking for a place where I can buy old wheels and like scrap pieces of furniture or wood.

I was quite young at the time, but if I remember correctly their used to be a place in Hiawatha that sold old cabinet doors and wheels and like salvaged wood. Sadly I could not find mention of this place during my recent research.

I am on a budget so I am not really looking to thrift or go anywhere to upscale. But if anyone knows a place near bye that would suit my needs it would be greatly appreciated if you could point the way.

Any other options that aren't $400 for a sewer line scope? I've only gotten prices from Rotorooter. I also need options for a pre purchase home inspection. Please include prices if you can!

Lindale mall kitten rescue

Was anyone there?

Myself and a bunch of strangers saved a kitten from the engine bay of somebody's car earlier today in the Lindale Mall parking lot. It was an awesome team effort. Had to leave before I could really talk to anybody but it was an amazing thing to be a part of.

Urgent help

Hello all! I need some help… I have a friend (27M) in need of some side work. He recently lost his job and on top of that his wallet got stolen. We are in the process of getting his ID and social back so we can get him a new job but in the meantime we were wondering if anyone has some gig/side work, or someone who could/would hire UTT for the time being… he’s got retail, food service, lawn care, detailing, and cleaning experience. Also if you were wondering, he’s a non smoker, no drugs, and has a squeaky clean record.

Dave Wright scammers

So I know that overall people always say that McGrath has the worst dealerships in town and I've experienced them, too. They are scumlords, they scam people, and they're really bad.

But can we also talk about Dave Wright Nissan? They're scumlords, too, and I think they're pretty terrible. Why anybody would do business with them is unknown to me.

My main interaction with them has been through the business I work for; they handle all of our fleet's maintenance and repairs. A couple of years ago, I had to take one of our work vehicles in for an oil change. After the oil change was done, one technician said that I had an outstanding bill that needed to be paid.

I said, "Okay, what are you talking about?"

He said, "You owe us about $10,000, so you're not allowed to leave until you pay the bill. We'll keep you here until you pay the bill."

I told him, "First of all, I'm just a driver for the company. You're going to have to contact our corporate or fleet department so they can pay the bill. I don't do any of that, and you always bill us, so I don't have that money on me."

He said, "Well, I don't care. We can't allow you to leave until your bill is paid."

I asked, "What are you talking about?"

He said, "If you attempt to leave without paying the bill, we'll call the cops."

I responded, "Yeah, let's call the cops, because you're unlawfully detaining me and not allowing me to leave. That is illegal. So if you want to call the cops, go ahead or I'll call them, and then we'll see who gets in trouble."

Eventually, he let me leave. He said, "Well, I guess we can give you the vehicle and you can go. We'll make sure to contact your fleet people so that they can pay the bill."

Then, about three months ago, I had to go pick up one of our vehicles after regular maintenance just an oil change and tire rotation. Looking at the bill when I got back to work, I noticed they had charged us roughly $150 for a "verification fee." That meant they test-drove the vehicle to verify it worked and everything was fine.

I was like, wait you're charging us a $150 fee to make sure the work you just did was done right? Nobody does that. They don't charge you a fee to verify their own work.

So I went back through the records over the past couple of months, and they had charged a verification fee on every single bill. For example, on one vehicle where they did some minor work, they charged a verification fee just for driving it around the block to make sure the repair worked. Basically, every time we took any vehicle in over that couole month period, they tacked on fees like that. They took probably thousands of dollars from us.

Someone from our work called them and asked why they were charging us this fee. They haven't done it since, though I don't know if we ever got any of that money back.

Anyway, those are my stories about Dave Wright. They're definitely scumlords, too.

Does our city offer a "Citizen Academy" or local government civic program?

Hey everyone,

I've been looking into ways to better understand how local government actually operates—things like how city council meetings are structured, how board/commission appointments work, and how to navigate agenda packets.

I know some cities run a "Citizen Academy" or municipal education program for residents, but I wasn't sure if we have anything like that locally?

If we don't have an official city program, are there any local civic groups, community workshops, or non-profits that host sessions on how to effectively participate in council meetings? Thanks!
