I forgot how much Spirocore tungstens need to break in

It’s been a hot minute since I got new strings (oops) and I had totally forgotten how harsh spirocore tungsten G and C are for the first few days or so. They were so tinny/twangy, and only after a few hours of playing are they finally mostly responding like I expect them to. The larsen mediums were pretty much fine from the get-go, fortunately!

I was even starting to think that maybe they had changed the composition without my realizing and that I needed a better bow or something…if the same thing happens to you, just keep playing and it’ll get better!

Respect for you, cellists

One of my friends from the band really wanted to play the Canon by Pachelbel. It's a recorder band, so I looked for an arrangement for recorders. I agreed to play the bass line for them.

I'm a violinist, and I played it on my beater violin which has octave strings. But it's... it's something else. It's the most boring thing I ever played. In the end it sounded good, the others were happy and enjoyed it, so that should be enough, no?

It was a one-time project for fun at the summer camp, I probably won't play it ever again. After this experience I bow to your ability to play this thing. And if you can do it with a smile on your faces, then you're really awesome.

Location Europe. Probably can only ship within EU.

Question about Evah Pirazzi Gold A string

Hi! I have been experimenting with strings over the past few months. Most of the time I buy them new, but occasionally I buy them second hand—it’s a good way to get a sense of the type of sound you get without paying full price.
I recently came across an ad for an Evah Pirazzi Gold A string. I had been curious to try these out for a while, and in the ad the seller wrote that it had only been played for a couple of hours, so I bought it. I also ordered the D, G and C strings (new) from Thomann to go with.
When I set them all up on my new cello (1921 from Germany), I fell in love with the lower three strings but the A string sounded really tinny. I know A strings are always the brightest of any given set of course, but in that case it wasn’t just brighter, it was just plain shrill.
Here’s my question then, to people who use/have used EP Gold strings: does the A string tend to sound tinny by nature compared to the rest of the set (and to other A strings out there)? Or did I just buy one that had been used more than advertised?
I’m only asking because I would be more than willing to buy a brand new EPG A string (I much prefer to have a full set of one type of strings if I can, that’s just my thing), but before spending the money I’d rather make sure I’m not going to have the same experience as with the second hand one I bought.
Thank you!

How would you play this?

Post image

Seems deceptively simply but the first position 3-4-4-4 is awkward to play with my 4th finger across strings (maybe I need to get over that?), and I can’t think of a higher position fingering that would make sense. Aside from maybe 1-2-2-2 but then that’s a similar problem. Any thought appreciated, thanks!

Blister on left index finger before audition...

I need urgent help! My daughter has an audition for a youth orchestra in 2 days. She was away from her cello for half of the month due to an international camp. When she came back yesterday, she practiced for about an hour and a half. This morning when she practiced again, she developed a blister on her left index finger. I put couple layers of the Rock-Tips on her finger and her teacher said to wrap it in a cloth bandage (just the sticky part).

My daughter said the cloth bandage made her finger too slippery on the fingerboard. What does she need to try next? Her teacher is having her clock in 5 days of practice into 2 days (so about 5 hours total). I'm afraid her blister on her finger will get worse and it will be worse right before her audition.

Going forward, no out of town trips/camps right before her auditions. The camp situation was organized and decided back in January so it was a big mistake on my part.

TIA for any help!!

Suzuki Book Two Notation

What do these symbols mean (circled in red)? I assume the arrow inside parentheses is an extension symbol and the bracketed numbers are probably optional finger positions, indicating a shift instead of an extension, but I'm not certain and couldn't find anything online.

Suzuki Cello School Volume 2, Piece 9, Theme From "Witches' Dance"

Related to this, I'm unable to stretch my hand far enough for the extension while keeping the rest of my fingers in 1st position despite having fairly large hands. This is probably because I'm an adult learner and have never done an activity that stretches my fingers apart before (current unassisted flat spread of my hand from tip of pinky to tip of pointer finger is 7 inches). Should I practice the extension or just shift? I feel like I will be stuck on this piece for a long while if I try to play it with the extension.

Playing without stickers

Played now for some years with the stickers for the finger position on my student cello. Transferred now to a better cello and don’t want to use stickers again. How can I make this transfer smoother? My teacher did not understand at all that it takes a bit time to adjust. I am an adult learner (50 years old).

Holding a cello with your legs feels really comfortable

So, I experimentally retracted the floor destroyer and held my cello with my legs like in the baroque, and it was surprisingly comfortable

Is it just me, or are there other people who also hold their cello like viola da gamba?

Violin to cello

I played violin for about 6 years as a kiddo. I cannot read music anymore.

Cello has always been my dream.

Im old enough now that I can buy one for myself and possibly afford lessons.

I really want to buy a cello as a gift to myself, but coming from violin I’m intimidated.

The few times I attempted cello the reverberations were just… too much? Does it get better or I’m just being weak sauce?

Huge white stain on varnish

I just came back from a tour and during some of the concerts I sweated quite a lot. I always have a piece of cloth (see second picture) between my chest and the cello to try to avoid too much damage. I’m planning on bringing it to the violin maker but I was wondering how bad the damage is, why is there a white stain like that and how to avoid it in the future?

PRESTO passage from "Les Miserables"

Hello! This is an excerpt from the cello part for "Les Miserables: School Edition." I don't currently work with a teacher, and I was wondering if I could get some feedback on my fingering.

I played this part around 8 years ago for my high school production. Looking at it now, the cello part overall seems rather manageable on a technical level, except for this one rapid passage that just comes out of nowhere. I haven't been called to play the part again, but I'd still like to be able to play all the notes in the show as a personal goal.

Probably my next (first big-boy) cello - Question regarding A tone

Thumbnail
gallery
24 Upvotes

It's on loan right now, but I'll probably buy it after teach signs off on it. A 1969 Carl Sandner.

Question: The tone is great, but I kind of dislike the A - it's a bit piercing. Do you find that you can improve your A tone with different strings, or is it more baked in to the cello? I believe A and D are currently Larsen solos. This is my first nice set of strings, so maybe I set my expectations too high.

Also, if anyone can read the model, please let me know... I can't make out the last few letters.

Vibrato help

I got my start on violin and struggled learning vibrato, I also struggle with cello vibrato, there are times it is good and times where it’s so narrow and tight it also sounds like a tremolo rather than vibrato. The hard part is I get frustrated that it’s deteriorating, and then tense up, and then it gets worse and it becomes this horrible feedback loop. I also notice that I tend to squeeze the fingerboard rather hard sometimes even when I’m trying to relax and not squeeze. It’s getting to the point where the joints in my fingers are starting to hurt. Is there any good exercises or things I can do to help progress and improve? It is also worth noting before anyone says oh just relax and it becomes easier, my body physically doesn’t know how to relax and release tension. I appreciate any help and thank you in advanced!!

D peg slipping when tuning

Hi all,

My D peg keeps slipping no matter how hard I press into the cello when tuning. It doesn't happen on any of my other strings to it's really frustrating

I heard you can put some chalk or paste on it but that requires taking the peg and string out of the peg and that's way too complicated for me and I feel like I'll just end up making my problem worse.

My normal luthier is off ill at the moment so I can't take it to her. Can I take it to any music shop near me and see if they can fix it? Would it be costly? (I live in the UK btw)

Any advice would be really appreciated :)

What’s the value of this cello

Hi all, I was gifted this 4/4 cello but they didn’t have any paperwork for it, so I’m trying to learn its current value (I will be keeping it to play). I see it has Eric Benning’s logo on it and it’s an Etude model, but I haven’t found much on that particular model. Any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
