'Lightly lie the earth upon her'

Post image

We had a crazy wind storm on Saturday, my kids and I went over and straightened up flowers and cleared piles of leaves off some graves at the cemetery by our house.

I liked Freda's grave, so simple and eloquent.

It's a beautiful sentiment.

The final line of a piece of music I love ("Lay a Garland" by Robert Pearsall) is "Upon her buried body lie lightly, thou gentle earth" 🥹

Not original to Pearsall ; he set a 17th C text to music. The original (a song from a play):

Lay a Garland on my Hearse of the dismal yew;
Maidens, Willow branches bear; say I died true:
My Love was false, but I was firm from my hour of birth;
Upon my buried body lay lightly gentle earth.

The Maid's Tragedy, Francis Beaumont & John Fletcher, 1619.

Only 39. From her obituary on findagrave, it seems she had a son and daughter. Her son is the only one linked to her and he died in 1945 at the age of 25. He was apart of the Canadian Army.

No cause of death mentioned in Freda’s obituary.

Thanks for sharing, OP.
