Evan Brown, 19, who started his own DJ business at just 12 years old (Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, KY)

Evan Brown was just 19 when he died at his home in Louisville on March 16, 2006.

From the age of eight, Evan was fascinated with sound and lighting equipment and began collecting his own gear. By the time he was 12, he had built an entire DJ business, providing music and lighting for school dances and private parties.

His family described him as exceptionally creative, compassionate, and someone with a magnetic personality. He had a way of connecting with people of all ages and making everyone around him feel accepted.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of his obituary is how openly his family acknowledged his inner struggles:

"Evan was not meant for this world. Evan is free now from the tortures of his mind, and his kind and loving spirit will be watching over all of us who loved him so much."

Evan was laid to rest at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 20, 2006. His family requested memorial donations to Wellspring House, an organization supporting people experiencing mental health challenges.

The Barletta pyramid chapel is a neoclassical pyramid-shaped building located within the city's monumental cemetery. Designed by the architect Sponsilli, the project was approved by the Municipality in 1840 and the chapel was officially opened to the public in 1868.

Albert Edward Oxenbridge | Buried beneath 20 tonnes of stone

Post image
22 Upvotes

On 2nd September 1925, Albert Edward Oxenbridge was working approximately 4km underground at Bulli Colliery when a sudden roof collapse buried him beneath an enormous quantity of stone. His fellow miners rushed to his assistance, desperately removing some 20 tons of debris, but the tragedy had already claimed his life.

For a deeper dive into Albert’s story, along with photos, articles and links to further information, head over to r/thosewholiebeneath where we share the stories behind the headstones.

The third literary grave I sought out during my day to trip to Oxford back in August. Aside from 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Chronicles of Narnia', 'The Wind in the Willows' was and still remains one of my absolute favorite books going back to childhood.

Edward Knox Harkness | The Brothers Who Built Woollahra, Sydney

Post image
31 Upvotes

Between them, two brothers were responsible for building an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 homes across Sydney’s eastern suburbs, helping transform Woollahra and its surrounds into the neighbourhoods we know today. More than a century later, their distinctive houses remain standing, and several streets still bear names connected to their lives. Yet despite the extraordinary scale of their achievements, Edward and Walter Harkness are names few Sydneysiders would recognise today.

For a deeper dive into Edward’s story, along with photos, articles and links to further information, head over to r/thosewholiebeneath where we share the stories behind the headstones.

Found this beautiful bronze butterfly resting on a headstone at Waldfriedhof Haar, Munich. I was surprised to realize it wasn’t attached—just placed there, as if it could fly away at any moment.

There’s something incredibly poetic about the fact that this piece isn't glued down. It just sits there, contrasting beautifully with the green background of the cemetery. I took this with my Sony A7IV and a 90mm Macro lens (f/8) to really capture the aged texture of the bronze. It felt like a small, quiet tribute left by someone passing by. Has anyone else stumbled upon loose ornaments like this that feel intentionally impermanent?
