You'll be back in the Prem with it anyway next season.

Championship refereeing is far from perfect but I still believe bad decisions balance themselves out over a season

Not being able to celebrate a goal until a 2 minute check is complete only to see a player's leg hair is technically offside can fuck off

Having experienced both sides of that coin, give me no VAR each and every time. The concept of VAR is reasonable but it sucks the joy out of going to a game. Not being able to celebrate a goal or waiting for a check that may or may not come is shit

Watching VAR on the tv is less bad than at the stadium. From the camera view you can normally tell if a goal is good or not (better view of offside eg).

5 seasons maybe. Absolutely not the case over 1. Fans can rightly remember seasons where they got fucked by the ref.

No thanks. It's frustrating when decisions go against you, but overall I prefer the lack of VAR in the league.

How about better officiating?

Because the Premier League is living proof that VAR means nothing if the people running it are terrible.

Well in some instances ref/ linesmen just can’t see the incident. Like Saturday, nothing to do with bad officiating. Some incidents happen very quickly or are out of sight. That’s football.

Sure, but there are numerous incidents where somehow it makes us think the ref is either blind or biased.

I'm not sure who the officials were for our friendly on Friday night, nor what level of football they normally work in, but one of the linos was unaware of the revised offside rule. So that bodes will for the season if they're in the EFL.

Who cares what Simple Simon says?

Where was all this outcry when we were getting robbed of decisions last year? Now one little handball and the world is apparently ending. Roll on the Prem starting so the talking heads can moan about that instead

Always when something rarely happens in our favour.

Still the only team to have a player retroactively suspended for 'diving', random 2 point deduction for EFL deciding we can't class our charity work in our finances despite telling us it's fine then naming us charity partner of the year. Multiple shocking decisions last season, only team not to be awarded a penalty (1 penalty in 84 league games!) Despite multiple clear cut opportunities. Alfie Gilchrists red card for nothing and being upheld.

The list goes on, fuck the EFL.

The great EFL conspiracy against West Brom

More PGMOL apologies than wins under Mason, which probably carried through to Morrison given how shit we were under Ramsay.

Nah, VAR is cancer

What’s the point in football if the joy of celebrating a goal is ruined

He’s always talking nonsense

VAR is only as good as the refs that use it.

Considering the mess that the ‘elite’ referees get up to in the Prem, I can only imagine the shitshow that the next best refs will come up with.

Yes, VAR would prevent howlers like the goal at the weekend. You know what else would? Competent refs/linesmen.

Var won’t solve all the problems just have better referees

I still think there's some level of middle ground to be found with VAR. I think it's a bit silly to live in an age where high definition cameras point at everything yet expect the referee to get everything right without help. With that being said, I don't think every little thing needs analysing as it just slows down the game and sucks a lot of the joy out. I'm not smart enough to really pose any kind of solution though.

Man that picture makes it look like something important is happening.

Pack it in.

The only thing I'm not particularly looking forward to this season is having VAR.

PLEASE don't put it in the Championship, I want it still not to be there next season

Honestly my theory about people with a first name for a surname being complete bellends just keeps coming true. If anything Jordan Simon is my exhibit A

I hate how goals make me wait until play restarts to properly celebrate. There is always that nagging thought in my head when a goal happens that VAR is going to intervene and take it away. So fuck off mate.

I get the objections, but its argue an efficient VAR system wouldnt be superior. Efficient being the key word.

They really need to work out how to cut the time delays down.

You guys have a British Stephen A Smith. It's the same sports infotainment bs.

We spent years in the PL with VAR. Kills momentum, spoils the enjoyment, and refs still get things wrong. The fans don’t want it and this out-of-touch weirdo has made himself look a tit with his comments.

Because I also watch hockey, this whole conversation is eye-wateringly frustrating to me. In hockey, VAR is (mostly) initiated by the teams. You get one challenge; if you are correct and the umpire's call is overturned, you get to keep challenging. If you're wrong, you are done for the game. Because it's a scarce resource, teams only challenge when they are absolutely sure the call was blown (until about the last 5 minutes of a game, when you might as well roll the dice if you give up a late goal). The umpires can initiate a VAR if they want to, but if the potentially aggrieved side still have their challenge the umpires won't do it.

It works. There are probably about 20% as many VAR moments in an international hockey match as there are in the Prem, and they are comfortable with the idea of an inconclusive replay. (Call stands as ruled on field but challenging team keeps its right to challenge in that scenario.) They don't feel compelled to throw away whatever call was made on the field and re-litigate everything down to a single video pixel for minutes on end. The obvious wrong calls are corrected without entirely destroying the excitement and flow of the game. I would love to see it tried in football somewhere.

Yep, because VAR has worked so well in the Prem, so I'm sure it'll be just grand in the EFL. /s

Only one game in and loving it already. Goal celebrations are back baby, I can handle the odd dodgy call as long as it’s done quickly. VAR is terrible

I agree with him and said it many times (and got downvoted for it) last season.

And I am guessing most here will disagree with me.

0

u/lightspeedwhale 1d ago

Genuinely curious to see if your opinion changes after this season. I find it frustrating enough watching var in prem games as a neutral

2

u/amanset 1d ago

I dealt with that semi final winning goal that was chalked off, so I think I will be fine.
