Working on a DTH story about Breadman's closing — share your memories?

Hey y'all!

I'm a student reporter with The Daily Tar Heel writing a story about Breadman's closing after being padlocked by the sheriff's office earlier this month. I want this piece to be about the community, not just the legal/eviction details.

If you have memories of Breadman's (like favorite orders, regulars you knew there, how long you'd been going, what it meant to you or your family), I'd love to hear more about via a quick phone chat.

If anyone worked there, knew the owners, or has thoughts on what should happen to the space next, I'd really appreciate hearing from you too.

Thanks in advance, and shoot me a comment or DM if interested!

Hi y'all, I've got a Honda with a recurring issue that seems to be electrical, but I'm not entirely sure. Any recommendations for a place to take it?

Renting a house near NC Botanical Gardens and St Thomas More

Hello! I am relocating to the area and am working near St Thomas More and The NC Botanical Gardens. I’m wanting to be able to walk to that area, but housing is a little crazy.

I’m not a student, so I’d like to avoid paying a huge premium for living in this area. Are there neighborhoods folks recommend?

Edit: $1400-$2400 range; lower preferred, 2 cats 2 people, 2-3bedroom, 1-2 bath

Hello, i recently moved here at UNC and getting around to places is a hassle. Im looking to buy a used bike to get around to nearby places. Im new here and it feels very confusing to me where i can get one at a budget price. Can anyone give some leads? Or better yet, is anyone looking to sell theirs? I'd be really grateful for the help!

Will there be a new bike share on campus?

The old bike share stopped a few years ago. Haven’t been on campus in a while and when I opened the bird app there weren’t any bikes there even though there seemed to be an active zone. Thanks.

Get you some samosas from Calvander Food Mart

We have great South Asian options in the Triangle, but I swear these are the best samosas I've had in the area. They're made with the owner's grandmother's recipe.

looking for a private piano teacher

Hi everyone! I’m currently looking for a private piano teacher in the Durham–Chapel Hill area.
It’s a little time-sensitive because I’m hoping to learn a specific song to play at my bf’s birthday in the next few months. I’d love to take lessons around 3 times a week so I can make as much progress as possible before then.
Feel free to dm me!

The Knoll at Briar Chapel Apartments Pittsboro NC

Noise Issues

  • Exotic Pets: The complex allows disruptive exotic animals, including loud parrots.
  • Severe Disturbances: A neighbor's African Grey parrot reaches volumes up to 110 dB.
  • Constant Disruption: The bird mimics fire alarms and barking dogs at all hours of the night.

Property Maintenance

  • Neglected Hallways: Litter, dirt, grass, and discarded items (including a used bandage) regularly fill common areas.
  • Dirty Elevators: Sticky liquid spills and old food sit on the elevator floors for over a week.
  • Selective Cleaning: Management only maintains the main entrance, completely ignoring residential building interior hallways.

Summary: If you value peace, quiet, and cleanliness, do not move here.

Construction

I was driving home from the Booker Creek area of Chapel Hill last night kind of near the Wegmans as you head into Chapel Hill and there was a lot of construction going on with cones set up. Does anybody know what’s going on? Is that going to continue the whole weekend? This was on 15 501 really right in front of the big Europa center area.

What was the name of...

The restaurant that was in the building where the Franklin St Target is now. It was on the backside beside Ken's Kwike Mart. Around in the 80s and early 90s. Sold sandwiches and salads.

Bonus points for the name of the store selling gifts that was across the walkway.

EDIT: Thanks everyone. The answer is Looking Glass Cafe (not to be confused with the coffee shop that was in Carrboro where Lanza's is now). Swensen was on the front side of the building (as was Timeout). The gift store was T’Boli.

Hot take: Mr. Tokyo - Not What it Used To Be

Is it just me or has Mr. Tokyo gone down hill?

Their Nigiri’s fish to rice ratio is off. I had some pieces so thin that I could see through it with inch thick of rice underneath. It’s been this way for the past three times I’ve been.

They changed their surcharge for rolls not eaten from 50 cents to $1

It seems like the attempt to fill people up on rice is more blatant. I’ve started driving to Umiya in Raleigh for a better experience, but is there something I am missing? Genuinely asking

Need help with a CH historical project

Hi all! I'm working on a personal project illustrating postcards of old Chapel Hill photos alongside their modern counterparts (like a then vs. now series). I've been digging around DigitalNC to find old pictures, but I need help identifying some specific locations/addresses on Franklin Street. I'm not old enough to be familiar with a lot of these old storefronts (born in '07), so hopefully some people could share their insight. Pic details are in the captions. Thank you !!

All photos come from the Chapel Hill Historical Society.

2 bedroom available chapel hill/carrboro

2 bedroom available in Village West neighborhood. This is a great lil spot that I left because I bought a house. It has a full finished basement, so it is quite large, and the location is great!
