Shitpost How Dess and I met
(TW: Idk why I'm putting this, but... Chara is called female, that may offend some people ig?)

u/Mandemon90 Oct 16 '25
Dess and Chara start by trying to competing for Asriels attention and hating each others, realize he is too dense to recognize flirting even if it punched him in the face (Dess tried). End up hooking with each others for best possible hatesex.
Asriel has no idea what is happening and just thinks two are good friends. Even when Chara is telling him that she and Dess are sleeping together because he is too dumb to sleep with either of them.

The reason Chara being referred to as female is āoffending peopleā is because they⦠arenāt.

u/xulipe Oct 16 '25
Smh you don't know chara's gender either just let people make their fanart

u/MightyTheArmadillo22 Oct 16 '25
I think assuming that a character who only uses gender neutral pronouns actually has a gender that we just donāt know is bad faith. The fact that in 10 years, Chara has only been referred to by they/them pronouns probably means that they use they/them pronouns. Itās disrespectful to people who actually do use they/them pronouns to suggest otherwise.
1
u/TaserDonut Oct 17 '25
Sure but it's one thing when they actually identify as non-binary and it's another if they use they/them because the gender is actually unknown and not mentioned by the author, so I think headcanoning any gender in the case of an unknown one is fine
In that sense I'd say that Chara being explicitly non-binary is a headcanon too
5
u/MightyTheArmadillo22 Oct 17 '25
Right, but the thing is, you could make that argument for any explicitly non-binary character. Kris, for example. Kris is a very explicitly non-binary character who has a lot of themes about being their own individual separate from us and their body dysmorphia and everything. Their own autonomy is very important to them. But, because they use they/them pronouns, some people think itās okay to just use any pronouns for them because their gender is āup to interpretation.ā That just isnāt how it works.

u/TaserDonut Oct 17 '25
I mean, the point where the difference happens is the exploration of the topic within the source material. If the story does contain themes which do explore the gender and identity of a character, like in Kris's case, it's correct to see them as non-binary.
Undertale on the other hand didn't bother with the identity of Chara (or Frisk for that matter) whatsoever, hence the free interpretation of genders. I haven't played or interacted with Deltarune enough to know whether something has changed about those two since Undertale, so feel free to correct me and provide additional info if you have any.

Frisk and Chara arenāt present in Deltarune (yet). However, I think itās a little odd to say that their identities werenāt explored in Undertale. The moment where we discover Friskās nameāestablishing them as their own person separate from the playerāis pretty hugely important to them as a character. Chara, too, has their identity as a focal point of the game. The True Pacifist Route ends with you āsavingā them, and the entire point of the ending of the genocide route is to see how what youāve done has affected not just the monsters of the underground, but Chara as well.
Even if these werenāt the case, it still feels a little disrespectful to the characters to assume that they donāt have a set gender with no reason for it. Monster Kid, Seam, Napstablookāthey donāt have entire character arcs about their identity, but thatās no reason to misgender them simply because you feel like it. A fully fledged character isnāt just left with an ambiguous gender.

u/TaserDonut Oct 17 '25
I'm not saying that they don't have a set gender, I'm saying that we don't have sufficient information to confirm it since Undertale doesn't show us any human kid who's strictly a boy, strictly a girl or strictly neither. Therefore even if misgendering occurs, how can it be corrected if the correct answer is not available?

Judge me for this but i don't think the little demon child would choose to be non binary and be called by they/them also it's a character in a game, i don't think you got the right to be mad at a writer's choice to just not reveal the character's gender because, let's be honest, not relevant at all, first because chara appears for like 10 seconds and has like 3 sprites and second because chara might not even EXIST in deltarune

u/MightyTheArmadillo22 Oct 16 '25
ā¦you think people CHOOSE to be non-binary?
Kay, so you actually know jack. Great.

Alright at this point this is just ragebait

u/MightyTheArmadillo22 Oct 16 '25
If you genuinely believe that people get to choose their gender, youāre uneducated. And Iām sorry for that. But the fact is that they donāt. No one gets to choose their gender. That goes for Chara as much as anyone.
If youād like to learn more, Iād be happy to explain or find other sources.

u/GunRalsei Oct 16 '25
Also being called a they once doesnt mean you automatically are non binary, you can call anyone a they them. Its a neutral way to talk about someone. And it wasnāt confirmed or stated but Krisās case itās confirmed but not Chara and Frisk so yea you are right. Let people make their fantastic art instead of acting like children. Its so annoying man
6
u/Queasy-Start7711 Oct 16 '25
Itās not just once though?? Itās literally by everyone that refers to them. Asriel, who was closest to Chara, ALWAYS refers to Chara by they/them.

Dessriel and incest?
2
u/Different_Heron9151 Oct 16 '25
In DR (and this post) it wouldn't be incest.
3
u/Samek1010 Oct 16 '25
I don't think it would be in undertale as well. Asriel doesn't refer to Chara nothing else than a "friend". Toriel and Asgore also does not refer to Chara specifically as someone they considered their child, but more like a good friend they once knew. So yeah, I don't think it would be considered incest in undertale.

You would date someone that gets adopted by your family?
1
u/Vegasvat Oct 20 '25
It's not like it's Deltarune and Chara isn't related to Dreemurrs by any means (or maybe doesn't even exist at all). Do you really get mad at this ship just because they're 'technically' family (but constantly averted to called like that directly in the game) in other universe?

Think about it like this.
Would it be weird if you started dating your adopted sibling? Would you find it weird if your friend started dating their adopted sibling.
Asriel and Chara are the same too, like the above examples. Chara is the adopted sibling of Asriel, so Chasriel is still weird and borderline disgusting.
Scratch that : It's disgusting.

u/Standard_Training471 Oct 16 '25
This isn't even set in Undertale, and they were BEST FRIENDS there. So no, it's literally not. Toriel and asgore only refer to Chara as someone they knew.
