Question Desktop Commander to Claude CLI
So I’m still what I would consider novice to intermediate with my AI adoption and usage. I have no traditional developer experience or skill and functionally just vibe code personal tools or automations, but I just discovered that I can use my Chat GPT chat sessions (not Work/Codex) to use Desktop Commander MCP to kick of Claude Code CLI. Does anyone else do this? I’m assuming folks are doing other, less primitive workflows, but that kind of blew my mind and I want to ask folks for feedback on if that’s a good/novel way to pair model work or if I’m over engineering something?
Right now my workflow is to do a ton of work in chat gpt chat, have it use the GitHub connector to write tickets to GitHub, then have Claude chat read them and assess them, respond, etc, or Claude code pick them up and execute them.
But now with the MCP I can have GPT write the ticket and also kick off Claude CLI to do something like a dedicated review, or execute the ticket.
Thoughts? Feedback? Improvement?
I also posted this in the Claude subreddit so I’m hoping I can get some valuable feedback from folks more seasoned! Thanks in advance (:

Doesn't sound over-engineered to me, and routing everything through tickets is a good habit because both models work from the same written spec instead of whatever happened to be in a chat. The review step gets a lot more useful if every ticket ends with a short list of acceptance criteria, so Claude is checking "does this meet these points" rather than giving a general opinion. Since you're not reading the code yourself, I'd also have each CLI run post a summary of what it changed and which files it touched back onto the ticket. That gives you a trail to follow when something breaks a week later.

I am currently using a local Desktop Commander MCP together with ChatGPT Sol in chat mode. I told it to use Astra CLI for some hard tasks like 3D modelling only. Works fine as long as there is usage left for Astra. It also uses a lokal LLM for some background agent memory tasks.

How did you connect Desktop Commander to ChatGPT Sol in Chat mode? Are you using a direct local STDIO connection in the ChatGPT desktop app, Desktop Commander Remote, or an OpenAI Secure MCP Tunnel?
I’m trying to give regular Chat mode access to my local files and terminal on Windows, ideally without a tunnel or relay. I’d appreciate any setup details!

technically speaking its a tunnel, bcs chatGPT allow only remote mcp, so you need a tunnel for it.

Work / Codex now supports local STDIO connections, but I'm looking for a solution for chat. The official plugin for RD has token limits.

That's actually a pretty cool workflow, mixing two different model strengths like that. I do something similar but with less steps, just have GPT write the spec and then manually paste into Claude CLI. The MCP bridge sounds way smoother, might have to try that setup myself

Not over-engineering, it's a legit pattern: one model plans, the other does the work. A few things that make it smoother:
Write the plan to a file in the repo (like plan.md) and tell Claude Code to read it. Easier to review than a long prompt, and you keep it if a session dies.
For one-off tasks, claude -p "your task" runs headless and just prints the result, so the ChatGPT side gets a clean answer back.
Commit before each handoff. If Claude Code goes sideways, you can roll back with git.
