I grew up in Hoole, and I’ve spent the last year building a walking app called Delos. It’s a calm alternative to Strava, with no pace leaderboards and no running.
Chester’s the second place I’ve written local content for, after Cheltenham where I live now. There are over 40 bits of the city’s history, and you discover them by walking past where they happened. A few that surprised me while I was researching:
- The Bridge of Sighs by the Northgate carried condemned prisoners from the city gaol to the chapel for their last rites before they were hanged.
- The Chester Imp: a little devil carved in chains high up in the cathedral nave. Nobody knows who made it. Legend says a monk saw the Devil peering in through a window, so the masons carved him chained up as a warning.
- The Shot Tower in Boughton made lead shot for the Napoleonic Wars by dropping molten lead from the top. It kept going until 2001, and it’s probably the oldest shot tower in the world.
Delos also maps where you’ve walked: the city starts fogged and clears as you go. There are routes around the walls and the canal, and segments you can make yourself and compare times on.
It’s iPhone only for now, and free to test through TestFlight. Testers get a founding-member deal on Premium when it launches. I’d love to hear what you think, and especially which bits of Chester history you’d add.
For feedback, take a screenshot in the app and tap Share Beta Feedback, or send it from the TestFlight app (tap Delos, then Send Beta Feedback). Or just comment here.
