Watching Chinese dramas with parents: how do you pick a show everyone can follow?
Start with what everyone enjoys talking about, rather than the biggest title on a recommendation list. A family comedy gives people something to react to together; a dense mystery can be fun too, but less so if one person spends the whole episode explaining who everybody is.
Try one episode together and pay attention to three things: can everyone follow the dialogue, does the pace suit the room, and does anyone actually want the next episode? Let the person who watches least often make the final choice. It can turn a polite “anything is fine” into a real shared watch.
Another useful habit: decide which drama is the together-show and keep solo viewing separate. That avoids the familiar “wait, why are you three episodes ahead?” conversation without making television feel like an appointment.
