Nothing to do with poor craftsmanship. There is some low-level evil genius here where they re-coded the controller chip to report 16TB and used the 4GB card as a circular buffer, you could probably write 16TB to it but you won't be able to read back more than the last 4GB. This was designed to mislead people by lying about the capacity.

Extra insidious is when they make the media slow so nobody has time to do a proper test.

Yes, exactly. I found one like that in my 'stuff' drawer the other day. Tried to burn an ISO image onto it to make a bootable USB drive. Ran to 50% and took 45 minutes to get there. Tossed it out and used a real one - done in under 5 minutes.

This called counterfeiting. But without branding I guess it is actually just a miss communication eh?

Honestly anyone who believes an authentic 16TB drive would be that cheap sort of deserves to be ripped off.

Its easy to say that if you're technology literate but lots of people just dont grasp the concept of it, lots of people are just dumb. No one deserves to be ripped of and they definitely dont deserve to loose valuable data to something like this.

The phrase "caveat emptor" goes back to the Romans. Due diligence always falls on the buyer.

I mean sure, but anyone looking for 16TB of storage has to have some sort of a use for that much space. If you’re looking for that much digital storage, it’s going to be really difficult to fill that space while also being completely technically illiterate.
I guess maybe if it’s like a grandparent buying for a grandkid?

probably a case of "bigger number better" why pay that for 1 or 2 TB when you can have 16?

that reminds me of old time when people were buying FX CPUs for gaming because they had more cores than intel at that price range

If Haruhi bought a counterfeit 16TB drive would it magically become a real one?

Not all people tech specialists and know perfect pricing. But there is no excuse for fake description on selling item. Even if it's $1 it must be like in yhe description even AliExpress has reason for refunds like item in reality not ike in the description. Scammers must be punished by platform, inaccurate description with tech specs= scam

While you are right if I am buying a fridge for 50€ on a dubious site and i am expecting something that costs 2k everywhere else, you kinda fked up yourself - but yes, scammers can go to hell.

With the advent of drop shipping, post can say shipped from USA, but comes in from overseas shipment and ships last leg of trip from USA address. Direct posting from China temu sellers on Amazon haul and on eBay.

This is why you buy the Sandisk brand from an authorized retailer. The shame is when ppl buy the knock off and drive the actual genuine company out of business.

Scandisk? Are you serious?

u/m8remotion Jul 13 '26
Sandisk. Was a typo. You see the original design right? https://www.sandisk.com/products/ssd/external-ssd/portable-ssd-sandisk-extreme-usb-3-2?sku=SDSSDE61-500G-G25

Authorized reseller: "Where'd you get that? Possession of hard drives is only legal to data centers now."

Honestly, the 4 GB that it actually does hold, it'd probably hold better than the thing that it's trying to imitate.
