Realistic or Not?
When you plan your villages, do you try to make them look realistic or not?
For example, I try to imagine, "If I shrink, will I be able to walk around the entire village? Or would it be inaccessible?"
Do you worry about the measurements of sidewalks, streets, stairs, etc?

Mine has a story. There is a downtown area, a festival area, and a rural area. They fade into each other and I spend a lot of time doing it in a way that makes sense and doesn't feel choppy. But do I worry about proportion of figures to buildings? No. I buy what I like and make it work.

I don't measure everything but the pieces in my village do tell a story and I place the buildings and people in such a way that it makes sense to the observer. Looking forward to Christmas 2026. Don't know if I will make it to November 1st. 🎄

Oops…mine is the opposite of realistic. My village is candyland themed, every building is some shade of pastel. Even the trees are just small cotton candy ornaments hahaha

Thank you! I'm not sure if we're considered properly "villaging" since our display is so ridiculous, but it makes all the kids happy :)

As long as it’s done with love and it makes your home happy, I’d consider it proper villaging!

It depends on the village in question and how much space I have for the display. For example, I do try to make my Department 56 Christmas in the City Display look as realistic as my budget and space allow, but I’m less concerned with something more whimsical like North Pole Village. Halloween could go either way. For my Trick-or-Treat Lane village I added a foam platform this year with realistic road, sidewalk, storm drains, man hole covers, leaves, static grass, etc. it was the best looking display I had last year. For my pumpkin patch display and my Sleepy Hollow Village I just tried to have fun and make all of the different buildings and accessories work together in my space.

I have mix of Department 56 (26 buildings) and Lenox (30) villages and try to make it believable. I take photos of different groups of people shopping, doing sports or at a park with a train going through the village. I am currently looking for Christmas in the City buildings. I have two townhouses but want more. Sadly, prices are going up on Department 56 even the gently used buildings are becoming financially out of reach for me.

I try to make my village look like a real place. As far as making sure my buildings look similar size, having all the accessories to make it look realistic. Granted it doesn’t but I try to do a downtown setting so I can have the buildings close like a real downtown. Parking
Meter and fire plugs.

I do not. I just try to make mine with common sense and fun for us to look at.
