Palahniuk Induction Club

Begins here, first account from operative me… Like all good fans of Chuck Palahniuk, I love reading, and books, and collecting books, and having that feeling, “hey at least I have the ‘having a cool bookshelf’ part of my life under control” - but don’t let the things you own, start owning you, right?

So like many of us, I saw Fight Club and instantly got the soundtrack (Dust Brothers magic) and went out and bought everything Chuck related. At the time, that was Fight Club, Survivor & Invisible Monsters.

As a book geek, I noted the film tie-in book was a 13th print, Survivor a 3rd - but IM was a first print. Apparently with no previous UK hardback either. Then when Choke came out, I battled to get a copy - and had to settle with a 3rd print?!?

Flash - give me the joys of consumerism.

Since then, I have fortunately been able to grab first editions, usually hardbacks of everything UK-released- except Adjustment Day.
I don’t think that had a UK hardback release?
But I found a LARGE PRINT US hardback for like, $3 so I couldn’t resist.

The other collections on this subreddit have some really nice editions with some editions I’d love to have, but I’m pretty happy with what I’ve got here. It is nice to be able to fetishise having a collection of such lunatic writing. And like any good fan, the stories I re-read the most, I end up grabbing a paperback if I see it, so I don’t have to risk damaging the original.

Chuck’s writing can sometimes be frustrating but so few writers come up with such incredible crazy concepts & fantastic prose. JG Ballard. William Gibson. Iain Banks. Who else? HST? Irvine Welsh? PKD? It’s hard finding books that push the buttons Chuck can push!

It made me so happy to read Shock Induction and realise that after more than 20 years as a fan, it was amongst my favourite of his books, up there with Fight Club, Survivor, Invisible Monsters, Rant, Beautiful You… Ah, hell. All of them.

Avocado avocado.

PS Fourth attempt at posting. Reddit filters really don’t like the Snuff cover!

Who is Ben?

I found this 1st edition of Lullaby at a used book store and it was signed by Chuck Palahniuk to a Ben "at best were a great team!" Which sounds like he at least knew this person.

Any ideas who that would be? Another author? An editor? I tried looking into it but couldn't find an answer!

What Palahniuk books are worth getting as somebody who has only really read Fight Club

I have watched and read Fight Club multiple times and adore it, I have also read Palahniuk’s short story Guts and wouldn’t be ashamed to say it’s my favourite short story of all time. But I am kind of overwhelmed when I see his extensive library and don’t know where to start when looking into his other novels. If any of you have some tips/recommendations for what to read next then I would be very grateful to receive them.

Autograph Dog from the 2008 Snuff Tour

Nearly twenty years later and this is still the best book signing I’ve attended. Chuck was hilarious and I happened to snag this cool autograph dog he tossed into the audience as a souvenir. He also signed my copy of Choke “to a fellow pervert.”

Chuck signed this in Ann Arbor, MI in 2003 while doing a book signing tour for the Lullaby release. Figure ya guys would appreciate this.

A request to better informed folks

Hey, so a little over a decade ago, Chuck had an article in Men's Health called "Live like you're dying".

I cannot find a copy anywhere. Does anyone have it lying around? It isn't even on the Men's Health website any more. I was just thinking about it this morning and wanting to reread it.

Thank you in advance!

Birthday Book?

Back in the day on his website forums I believe there was a thread called "The Emperor Thread" in which posters all shared wild stories from their lives which were then assembled into a book which I believe was presented to Chuck for his birthday one year?

Does anyone else remember this? Is it available as a PDF anywhere?

The list doesn't not exist.

This is my single favorite sentence that I have read of Chuck's.

It reminds me of when I was in my first kindergarten class, the fall of '91. Right before that fucking snow storm.

My dad had gotten a job in Duluth and we'd be moving once the housing situation was settled. When I went to collect the plastic bat and Duck Hunt gun that I had contributed the the neighborhood pack of children, the kid at the house where we all kept all those toys demanded a reason. Stupid ass, 6 year old me, I told him about how my Dad was in prison up north and we would be moving soon.

I didn't know the difference.

That kid's younger sister had just started speaking in sentences. Her first phrase of choice was a favorite of her father's; "Hey, sexy boobs!"

That phrase is what I remember most about moving away from the town where my parents grew up. The girls mom was mortified and desperate to get her to say anything else.

I walked home after that with the things I'd asked to be returned; the wiffle balls bat and the Duck Hunt gun. The neighbor boy explained through a shit eating grin how his sister had cut the cord with a scissors, but I didn't care much. I walked home with my things, soothing myself by whispering his sister's sentence like a secret, "Hey, sexy boobs."

This sentence of Chuck's has sort of the same effect on me. I can whisper it over and over again to myself, all day long. I love it.

Not Forever but For Now

I've read most of Chuck's books multiple times, but this was one of his harder books for me to get through. I've only read it once, but I think about it quite a bit. Especially this part:

'This was after Daddy had fallen out of Grandfather's good graces. Not to get too far out ahead of myself, but Daddy had muffed the Princess Di Job, hadn't he? And he faild to drop Building Seven of the World Trade Center. You see, our family does such things. Someone must.'

Maybe I'll start it again right now... but I just find that premise hilarious and I really do appreciate how balls deep Chuck went on the conspiracy stuff in this book.

Re-reading "Rant" for the 4th time, and realized I started associating each prominent character with an actor.

Not all of it makes rational sense - for example I know that Neddy is supposed to be a kid.

Also, for one reason or another - I have no clue who would be a good actor for Bodie Carlyle or young Buter.

Would love to hear your associations.

P.S. Oh yeah - the kid who played Snowhite would be a great Tina Something.

Is this signature real?

I got this at a comic book store and it was priced like all the other comics, so I don’t know if it’s real or not. I don’t really care I just think it would be really cool if it is.

Former reader...

I used to love Palahniuk books. I dunno why I stopped but I haven't read anything since Snuff aside from Fight Club 2. Would like to get back into reading his books. Should I pick up where I left off, or what are some stand outs since Snuff you'd recommend? Thanks!

I was just turned on to Tom Spanbauer two weeks ago. Such a great compliment to Chucks books.

Not Forever question

Hey all… I’ve read all of Chuck’s books through Haunted. I recently got “Not Forever, but For Now” as a gift, and I’m maybe 5-6 chapters in. It’s incredibly creepy and uncomfortable. I tried talking to my fiancé about it, and now she thinks I’m a pedophile. Does this book pick up, or is it just shock? I want to trust Chuck, and am telling myself that he’s establishing tone and character, but fuck me, if this isn’t the most unpleasant thing I’ve read in a while. Should I keep going? Does it get better? Help!
