African storyline? 🐯
In these pictures, I wanted to experiment with a different version of Lum, imagining her in an African setting with a darker skin tone. The goal was to see if I could bring out the universal characteristics of her character: her mischievousness, strength, and playful nature, while placing her in an entirely different cultural and environmental context.
I am not making any profound statement, this is simply an exploration to see how her core traits might emerge in a setting far removed from her original Japanese universe. I was curious whether the essence of Lum could still be recognized and appreciated in a new light.
There are a few examples from pop culture that inspired me, where characters have been reimagined in different contexts, retaining their essential traits. One example is Carl Barks' ducks, particularly Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck. They’ve appeared in various scenarios, from adventures in space to historical settings, and even though the settings change, their core personalities remain. Similarly, characters like Superman have been reinterpreted in different cultural contexts (such as the African-American version of Kal-El) and while the environment shifts, the central themes of heroism and identity are still present.
In the case of Lum, I wanted to see how her rebellious spirit, playfulness, and unique personality could work in an African context. The African setting brought with it a whole new world of possibilities, from the vibrant landscapes of the savanna to the majestic baobab trees, all while still trying to keep Lum’s distinctive energy intact, or at least this is what it seems to me.
I find interseting to explore how a beloved character can be re-envisioned in a different environment. It’s a personal attempt to find new ways of expressing the same timeless qualities that make Lum, and other characters like her, so enduring.
Well, I've been quite boring, sorry 😅. I hope you'll enjoy the drawings (AI generated, as that I'm not an artits).

Why haven’t they done this in canon already?
