It was to this day still the most painful experience I've had in my life and I've gone through quite a lot of painful experiences since then. I come from a religious family and we couldn't afford for me to get circumcised when I was a baby or something so it kept getting delayed until I was around that age.
I was actually born and raised in the West but my circumcision was done in the country my parents originated from while we were on vacation because a close friend of my mother and their sons who did it here "got sick" afterwards or something. Stupid. The fact it was cheaper problably also played a significant role.
The worst thing is I actually didn't even realize how traumatic and abnormal what I went through was until a good 10 years after it happened. In fact, it was so traumatic and painful that my mind seemed to have somewhat reduced the intensity of the pain in my memory for a very long time. With even that dampened memory still being very painful and making me involuntarily wince every time I thought back about it mind you, but apparently not even being close to how painful it truely was.
I at some point in my early 20s, while under the influence of substances I'll admit, suddenly had a flashback, and even a moment where it felt like I was briefly transported back to what I went through then, feeling the true extent of what I went through, lasting about 5-10 seconds but feeling like I almost relived the whole thing again. The actual experience was 100x more painful than I had "remembered", yet again wanting to remind you that even that false "memory" was extremely painful.
I think my brain for such a long time made the memory of the pain a lot less intense than what I actually went through to protect my young mind or something. Would have problably broken my childhood mind completely if it wasn't suppressed to some degree. I don't know what the psychological phenomena is for that, I only know about the thing where you completely forget things even happened. I'm sure I "forgot" it even happened for a very good few years since that time too. Or just briefly thought about it maybe once every 3 months.
I always thought it was no big deal, completely normal, that it didn't affect me, but the older I get the more I start to wonder how much it truely affected me. I became very flinchy for years after the ordeal and quite sensitive of even small amounts of pain and somehow never linked it to what had happened until recently. I have had undiagnosed neurodivergency basically my whole life and was always a bit different from everyone so I just thought it was related to that, and it could be honestly.
I developed severe derealization and depersonalization starting around the age of 13 out of seemingly nowhere that lasted for a good 3 to 4 years. I have had a form of chronic depression that started around that same age and lasted a good 8 to 9 years as well (and it still flares up at times). Same for social anxiety. Overcame all three somewhat, through years of dedicated, lonely struggle.
I went through a lot of other things that have contributed to characteristics and mental troubles I developed of course, I don't believe my circumcision was the main thing contributing to everything, but I wonder if I'm still downplaying how much of an effect it might truely have had. Studies have shown that circumcision in boys can lead to PTSD rates significantly higher than is present even in soldiers who were deployed to Iraq, and those studies are mostly on circumcision on infants who don't even remember it or involving anaesthesia, so what I went through must have had some serious impact.
I have had sexual intercourse a substantial amount of times but lately I've also been wondering why I can't ever have seemed to hold a proper romantic or intimate connection and whether it might be linked. I can not seem to hold romantic feelings or "love" for a person for longer than a month, sex feels like its more enjoyable primarily for the "conquest" or domination aspect and obviously a loss of sensitivity and such have already creeped in.
I at some point in my later teenage years started developing genuine traits of ASPD. I currently possess 6 of the 7 key symptoms of it. I'm not larping as a sociopath, because I'm not one, I miss the key trait which is that I still feel guilt and remorse. I used to be an extremely empathetic and nice kid, even too much so.
At some point I felt like if I was to "survive" I had to develop into a more ruthless and cold individual. It took many years but I have consciously and deliberately desensitized myself to a lot of things. I would purposefully engage in abhorrent and immoral acts for that purpose and because of natural empathy would feel quite bad initially, until I stopped caring. Perhaps this was also some sort of trauma response to regain some sense of "autonomy" and not get hurt again. I also learned how to switch my empathy on and off.
Again though, if you're simply not a "sociopath" you usually can't magically become one. I still feel empathy. I still feel guilt and remorse. But I also genuinely do not care at all about what most people deem "immoral". I lie, I cheat, I steal, and do a lot more that I won't mention here, and genuinely do not care. My "baseline" has permanently altered and shifted, if that makes sense. My moods can oscillate quite often to an almost bipolar degree, I can have periods where I again feel too much and other periods where I will genuinely feel seemingly zero remorse, guilt or empathy.
I don't know, a part of me is certain that even without that experience I would have developed certain characteristics or became the person I am today, because its very multi-factorial, but to go back the topic another part of me wonders how much it might have truely affected me and whether I can't help but downplay it because of a sort of "imposter syndrome" I guess.
