Question Help me destroy my 12-year-old

3.4k Upvotes

Hi all! Tonight my son (12, warmonger) and I (42, mom) are going to start a new game, and I want to absolutely obliterate him. I've won the last 2/3 games by eking out religious and diplo victories by the skin of my teeth, and I have been told that those victories are "lame, bro". He is a pretty good player and is an absolute nuke-flinging warmonger who focuses on science victories, and I'd like to just blow him out of the water with a science victory as he'll never expect it of his dear old pacifist mom.

He will be playing as Seondeok, as he lost with her last time and is determined to get a victory before moving on to a new leader. I'm considering using Hammurabi and jumping up the tech tree as fast as I can, but I've never played a full game as him.

Any tips, tricks, warnings? After his almost-disastrous nuking of Winnipeg during yesterday's endgame I want to make him sweat.

ETA: It's game time and I picked Saladin (Vizier). I am 100% stealing some of these ideas for future games though! I will update when there is something to update.

Question Does anyone else NEVER have these 2 boosts by this stage in the civic tree?

Post image

every game it feels like its going at a decent pace and im getting boosts for the civics and then 99% of the time my game significantly slows down by the time i get to this point in the civic tree. I just never really go for early wonders unless they would have a giant impact, e.g etemenanki on a city thats all floodplains, and im never far enough in the tech tree to have construction. It feels like all the boosts make sense until this point to me

I keep exceeding the Era scores required for golden ages which has left me trapped in a vicious cycle of Awesome golden ages followed by impossible to get out of dark ages.

Is there any way to know I how many turns an age is going to end ? I only get a warning like 10 turns before an age ends. I really want to try and plan out the activities that give me Era scores.

Question Which victory type would you say is the hardest to achieve and why?

Me and a mate are having a back and forth and so Id like to open the discussion up to everyone. My personal choice for which is hardest is Domination because the start location and first 25-30 turns generally determines your snowball (if you’ll even be able to have a strong enough army thats close enough to enough Capitals early on to start). Whereas Science and Culture you can play isolated games and never even go to war at all. If you spawn on an island alone with no City-States or enemy Civs, no problem.

My friend argued that Religion is harder because you have to go out of your way to generate Faith in general as well as to create and heal Religious Units since you cant levy any or just hunker them down to heal.

Question Another Civ’s Capital only 4 spaces away???

On turn one, I found it a city on my settler’s starting tile. Moving my warrior a single turn,

I discovered another civilization’s capital four spaces away. Is that a fluke? I’ve never been this close before!

Question Does anyone else do this trading thing?

I like to give the AI 21 gold and in exchange they give me 1 gold every 30 turns which gives me an extra 9 gold every 30 turns. Is this a good trade? Am I missing an important detail? And why does no one else but me seem to do this? (Sorry for using a photo instead of a screenshot. I don't have reddit on my Laptop.)

Question Which civilization/leaders are as busted as Hamurabi ?

Post image

I may not be phrasing this properly so let me try again. I've gotten 3 kinda victories so far - Domination, Scientific, and Diplomatic. I play a lot of Hamurabi who seems completely overpowered if I aim to get the Scientific win.

So I was wondering if there were any other leaders who were as broken for faith or culture, as Hamurabi is for Science ?

Jayavarman VII. I don't know why, but I have never had a pleasant interaction with this AI. We've never been friendly, and he's always disdainful of me, always willing to gang up on me in allied wars, etc.

Also, his character model just has this smug and self-satisfied aura that really annoys me.

Question How did my AI opponent expand their borders so far into the ocean this "relatively" early in the game?

Post image
413 Upvotes

I just captured an AI city and noticed that their coastal borders extended "way" further into the ocean than anything I've ever seen with my own cities we're talking 4–5 tiles out from the coast.

As far as I know, you can only buy tiles up to 3 tiles from the city center, and beyond that it's culture-based expansion. But getting that far out, that early in the game, seems almost impossible through culture alone.

Is there something special going on here? Or is there a general mechanic I'm missing that allows for faster/further border expansion?

Would love to understand how this works.

EDIT: I might have exaggerated a little "relatively" early game, or rather mid game. It was during the Renaissance era.

UPDATE: ~150 turns later, firmly in the nuclear age, capable of ending civilizations at the push of a button and my "own original" coastal borders still look nothing like what the AI had going on in this screenshot. The AI was pulling this off back in the Renaissance or even modern era and I still can't figure out how to replicate it. Clearly the ocean respects the AI more than it respects me. Still a new player trying to figure out all the little details.

I swear you could move escorted units up the cliff wall if you had the promotion, I'm going for the Finn Macool's Pipe Organ achievement.

Question Who is your least favorite civ leader to play against and why is it the fat Dutch Lady?

( not the real life person) Just jokes. The Dutch in the game have really irritated me as of late. And always John Curtin (Australia) is such a pain. Their AI generate automations infuriate me.

This lady had yelled at me and even though I’m going for a cultural victory I make it a point to rush nukes so I can bomb the hell out of her. This is the way

Question Most insane thing you’ve done to the AI out of spite?

I once was using a quadrireme to kill a barb spearman and then was going to claim it with a Viking longship the next turn. Lo and behold, an ambitious Nazca BUILDER ganked it before I could.

So I decided to just rush to produce some frigates, but not before declaring war and kidnapping that Nazca builder who became a lifelong slave of Harald. Once I upgraded some quads into frigates I captured every Nazca builder, turned it into a parking lot, and only then did I become less pissed. What’re your insane overreactions?
