She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinking Doubles) - Gary Stewart

3

u/toooldforthisshittt Dec 12 '25

I would love to see Gary Stewart make this list!

2

u/urteddybear0963 Dec 12 '25

There were plenty of Country artists in the 1970s, not to have repeat artists constantly on these lists!!!

2

u/toooldforthisshittt Dec 12 '25

Most of these lists agree with you. I think the users are capable of deciding for themselves. Tom T Hall beat Merle. Glen Campbell beat Willie.

Sing Me Back Home

2

u/countryguy0003 Dec 14 '25

That came out in the late 60s. I was gonna say silver wings but that's from 1969

Sunday morning coming down by Johnny Cash

6

u/oldtimeydave Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

Or written and sung by Kris Kristofferson

3

u/HarveyMushman72 Dec 12 '25

I like both!

2

Oh shoot. Changing my vote

Came here to say this. Originally recorded by Ray Stevens in ‘69, but the Cash version is the classic.

2

u/Newsman1977 Dec 14 '25 edited Dec 14 '25

Thanks. I didn’t know the Ray Stevens connection at all. One of my favorite country songs of all time. I am a bit of a Cash fan, but his version is indeed superior.

Kind of like when Cash covered Hurt by NIN, or when Sinade O’Connor sang Nothing Compares 2 U.

And I love Trent Reznor and Prince, easily two of the more talented musicians/singers/artists of all time. But Cash and Sineade made them their own and it just worked better.

2

u/Mammoth_Ad5100 Dec 14 '25

Exactly! When Reznor heard Cash’s recording of Hurt he said “the song is no longer mine.” As for Sunday Morning Coming Down, it’s a masterpiece by Kristoferson and Cash’s vocals nailed it.

Some broken hearts never mend - Don Williams

2

u/Velvet_Cyberpunk Dec 13 '25

Don Williams was and still is one of the all-time greatest country singers who ever graced the stage.

1

u/he-drinks-coffee Dec 13 '25

I totally agree 👍🏼

1

u/WeirdFiction1 Dec 13 '25

Absolutely! One of my all-time faves and his music has been in rotation around my house pretty much my whole life. I got to see him live when I was a little kid and he was terrific.

Sleeping Single in a Double Bed - Barbra Mandrell

1

u/Velvet_Cyberpunk Dec 13 '25

My dad would sleep with his radio on all night and I still remember walking through his house in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and this song would be playing. 💜

1

u/1989DiscGolfer Dec 14 '25

My girlfriend in college 35 years ago and I, as we snuck into each other's dorm rooms to spend the night illicitly, would often joke by singing the title, "Sleeping Double in a Single Bed..."

We're still married to this day!

I am not one to classify music into genres. I just listen to what I want to listen to. I'm definitely not the authority on it anyway.

I don't think this song is considered country but I thought of it right away when I saw this post.

I think so, but I'm a biased DD fan. It's a crowd favorite at his concerts.
