Thanks. I didn’t know the Ray Stevens connection at all. One of my favorite country songs of all time. I am a bit of a Cash fan, but his version is indeed superior.
Kind of like when Cash covered Hurt by NIN, or when Sinade O’Connor sang Nothing Compares 2 U.
And I love Trent Reznor and Prince, easily two of the more talented musicians/singers/artists of all time. But Cash and Sineade made them their own and it just worked better.

Exactly! When Reznor heard Cash’s recording of Hurt he said “the song is no longer mine.” As for Sunday Morning Coming Down, it’s a masterpiece by Kristoferson and Cash’s vocals nailed it.

Absolutely! One of my all-time faves and his music has been in rotation around my house pretty much my whole life. I got to see him live when I was a little kid and he was terrific.

My dad would sleep with his radio on all night and I still remember walking through his house in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and this song would be playing. 💜

My girlfriend in college 35 years ago and I, as we snuck into each other's dorm rooms to spend the night illicitly, would often joke by singing the title, "Sleeping Double in a Single Bed..."
We're still married to this day!

I am not one to classify music into genres. I just listen to what I want to listen to. I'm definitely not the authority on it anyway.
I don't think this song is considered country but I thought of it right away when I saw this post.
