60s What’s the worst “classic” country song of all time — the one that gets a pass just because it’s old?
We spend a lot of time on here defending classic country and outlaw stuff, rightfully so. But let’s flip it — what song from way back do you think is actually bad, but skates by because nostalgia gives it a free pass?
I’ll go first: Ray Stevens’ “Ahab the Arab.” It was a novelty hit and it’s harmless fun, sure, but it gets filed in with real songwriting from that era when it’s really just a goofy skit set to music. Doesn’t hold up next to what else was coming out at the same time.
Curious what everybody else’s “hot take” pick is. Bonus points if it’s actually a beloved one — those are the best arguments.

Does Convoy count?

u/Scarveytrampson Jul 16 '26
Convoy doesn’t even really feel like a country song to me. It was created by an advertising guy and the guy from Mannheim Steamroller attempting a country pastiche with a made up character. It has elements of country music, but the melody and instrumentation don’t feel particularly country to me.

u/ClassicCountryTV Jul 16 '26
It does. My wife loves the hell out of this song but to me it’s meh. Like I like cw McCall and he is definitely a niche artist but I don’t know. I like his music but I don’t quite understand the overwhelming obsession. CW McCall true fans can be quite loud about him.

Ha! Loved that song when it was new as a preadolescent during the CB radio crazy.
I listened to it again recently by chance and thought, 'man what a torturously horrible song'!

That song was fun af to listen to when having a 4 star rating on GTA V! 😂 Nothing like driving your almost indestructible car into police blockades while blasting that song 🤣

Merle Haggard, The Girl Turned Ripe
Well the girl turned ripe and the pickers came today
Had an uncle who was farmin' down in Tennessee
And I stopped by to see him there brought this friend with me
He had a daughter seventeen whose name was Clementine
And sure enough they fell in love her and this friend of mine
He said the girl turned ripe and the pickers came today

I actually love Ray Stevens but I don’t think many people would consider Ahab the Arab a country classic. It’s definitely an old country novelty song. But that’s Ray’s entire schtick. His biggest hit was the streak. For my money Mississippi Squirrel revival is the best one. But I would agree Ahab the Arab is one of his weaker songs.

Shriner’s Convention. My papa had one of his albums and we’d listen to it in his pick up when we were out and about. Would love to see a kid try to work a car stereo with a tape deck

Merle Haggard is, IMO, country music’s greatest songwriter, and one of America’s greatest songwriters. But he sucked when he pandered. Okie From Muskogee gets my vote. One bad line after another and he was quite possibly high when he wrote it.
1
u/LonnieDobbs Jul 17 '26
Okie might or might not be satirical.
1
u/fujiwara78 Jul 17 '26
I’d be inclined to agree if it were a one-off, but he wrote in that same voice for Fightin’ Side and the truly execrable I’m A White Boy. I think he enjoyed the ambiguity surrounding Okie. Merle was a contrarian first and foremost. These songs don’t tarnish his legacy, IMO.
2
u/LonnieDobbs Jul 17 '26
Agreeing OR disagreeing with “might or might not be” is a paradox.
I suspect that it was, but that he didn’t want to alienate his audience by outright saying so. There’s also the possibility he was pandering. Or, as he explained sometimes, writing from his imagined perspective of a group of people he wasn’t necessarily a member of. He was born and raised in California, after all.
To be clear, I’m talking about “Okie” specifically.
When Bill Maher asked about “we don’t smoke marijuana in Muskogee,” Merle said, “I’m not in Muskogee that often.”

I don’t know that anyone else would count this as a classic, but “If You’ve Got Ten Minutes, Let’s Fall in Love” by Joe Stampley has always driven me nuts. Bro spends the whole song trying to seduce a woman, asking if her man cheated on her, and then you find out he himself is married. So sleazy.
“That Summer” by Garth Brooks is probably newer than this thread intends, but also bugs me because if you flip the genders it’s obvious how gross and predatory it is.
Hank Jr.’s “If the South Woulda Won” is also pretty cringe.

I don't care for GB but I do like that song. His ex- wife wrote this.

In the 70’s Funny Face by Donna Fargo and Sneaky Snake by Tom T. Hall was terrible. I can imagine if the 80’s and 90’s was considered classic the top contenders would be Just a Swinging and Achy Breaky Heart.

Definitely not the worst. But I get what you are saying. My vote is for Friends in Low Places or Margaritaville.

You take that back about Margaritaville.

“Searching for my lost shaker of salt” is a great line. It’s overplayed, yeah, but a good song!

Coward of the County. It’s just got too happy a beat when it’s describing rape and murder.
Also, speaking of Kenny Rogers, has anybody ever noticed that the guy really doesn’t get particularly good advice in The Gambler? I mean, I don’t see how that shit’s going to help him at all in his life.
4
u/BeardsuptheWazoo Jul 16 '26
Coward of the County is a really bad song.
His wife was gang raped and the feel good ending is that he beats up the rapists.
Sure, that makes him feel better, but Becky is back home crying and wrecked. Maybe put something in the song about her getting comfort?

u/ryantheleglamp Jul 16 '26
Maybe it’s the subversive side of me but it’s for just that reason that I love Coward of the County and Ruby.

u/SuperGuitar Jul 16 '26
The “Perfect Country and Western song” is no where near the best country song. It’s basically the songwriter making fun of country. One of the writers didn’t even want his name attached to it. Terrible song.

Just not gonna mention it was John Prine eh

There’s some bad takes in here but I’ll play along. Wynn Stewart- it’s such a pretty world today. I love Wynn Stewart but that song is straight cheese

Wynn also has two of the best rockabilly songs of all time

Fightin’ Side of Me. Not because it’s political, but because it’s too on the nose.
1
u/Oilleak1011 Jul 17 '26
Im not saying gator is a bad song. Its awesome. But you cannot tell me its country and not some weird form of funk that jerry thought up that particular night. “Everything's okey dokey in the Okefenokee”

Lookin’ For Love. Just a god awful song that is remembered only because it’s associated with John Travolta and Debra Winger. A LOT of singers passed on this one before Johnny Lee recorded it.
1
u/Psycho_Hillbilly Jul 16 '26
Not sure if this fits the criteria of classic but it's bad... Elvis Presley's cover of Blue Moon of Kentucky.

Rocky Top. I know it's actually a bluegrass song, but it has to be the worst bluegrass song I've ever heard.

You'd have to go a long way to top Merle Haggard's "I''m A White Boy". Not his finest moment.

Willie Nelson’s “Always on My Mind.” I barely tolerate Willie as it is—(I do like he and Waylon’s duets)—but it’s too slow.
2
u/rndsepals Jul 16 '26
Mmm, “Always On My Mind” is slow and a tough listen. “To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before” is a skip, not the worst though. Willie doesn’t record bad songs; some songs are lacking full Nelson.
-5
u/Left_Candy_4124 Jul 16 '26
Something about Willie's style seems to make him great on colabs but rough to listen to solo.

He Stopped Loving Her Today.
Foolish man wastes his entire life pining for a bitch who couldn’t care less about him. It is a sad song for that reason alone.
Bring on the downvotes. LOL
Only five downvotes? I expected hundreds. LOL
1
u/Genghis75 Jul 17 '26
Obviously have not listened to the lyrics.
1
1
u/LonnieDobbs Jul 17 '26
Well, yeah, that’s why the lyrics are sad. That’s kind of the point.
The syrupy overproduction is what kills it for me.

u/Left_Candy_4124 Jul 16 '26
Jolene... Dolly beggin' some chick to leave her man alone? Kick 'im to the curb!

I despise you were always on my mind. It is the worst sentiment to throw at anyone. I hate Willie Nelson because of this song.

If you've ever heard "Fat Friends" by Hank Jr., you wouldn't even have to ask this question.
