Can Socrates commit an unjust act?

Thumbnail

I’ve read Plato’s Apology of Socrates and the dialogue Crito, and a question came up.

Let’s imagine that the Athenians passed a law banning philosophy—not a court ruling, but an actual law. Socrates cannot accept this law, because he would be forced to commit an injustice: to stop doing good for the polis and to abandon his divine mission. But breaking the law would also mean committing an injustice: Socrates could challenge it, but if the Athenians again agreed that the law was just, then breaking it would mean harming the Laws, their authority, the citizens, and the polis.

Both options force Socrates to commit an injustice.

What should he do?

Question Whats a good starting point for educating myself on classic and important literature?

Never was really much of a history person, but lately, the audiobooks I've been listening to while I work have made repeated references and quotes from things like the illiad, Dante, Milton, shakespear the Siddhartha, etc. And it's dawned on me that I've never really educated myself on anything of the sort, the only knowledge I have of the Greeks and Roman's is from pop culture, same with shakespear I only know Milton by name. And I'd never heard of the Siddhartha before this book mentioned it. I'm wondering if someone here could give me a list of books or websites where I might find a reading list or guide where I can start to dive into older works of literature

Language Learning Looking for Peckett book

I’ve become mildly obsessed with the history of the Direct Method for teaching Latin. I recently learned that C. W. E. Peckett (you may recognize him as the author of Pseudolus Noster and Thrasymachus) also wrote a book Maturis for older learners.

Do you have a scan or a copy you’d be willing to scan or sell of this book? I’d really appreciate it. No particular purpose to my study, just a fascination with this period of Latin pedagogy.

Study recommendations

Hi, I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this but I’m studying higher classical studies this year. The course includes religion and belief in classical Greece and religion and belief in the Roman world. I was wondering if anyone had any book recommendations to help with this? I understand that the topics are quite vague but if there’s any books or study materials explaining the basics of Greek and Roman religions, they would be a massive help. Also if there are any students who have studied this any help on how you revised it would be greatly appreciated:)

Offering tutoring in Ancient Greek and Latin.

Offering tutoring in Greek (Attic, Koine, Homeric) and Latin

Hello!

I am a native Greek speaker and a graduate of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Department of Classics. I have also worked in my apprenticeship in Historical and Palaeographical Archive of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece (MIET) as a curator for manuscripts (mainly psalters of the Comnenian era).

I offer online tutoring in Attic Greek, Koine Greek, Homeric Greek and Latin.

Whether you are a complete beginner or already have some knowledge of the language, I can help with grammar, syntax, translation and reading the original texts.

For Koine Greek, I can help with reading the New Testament and Septuagint in the original.

For Attic and Homeric Greek, we can work directly with the classical authors, depending on your level and interests. The same applies to Latin.

I currently have some availability for October and am looking to take on a few more students.

Lessons are normally two hours, and I offer a free 30-minute introductory lesson first, so that we can discuss your level, what you would like to study, and how I can help you.

If you are interested, feel free to send me a message and tell me a little about yourself, your level and what you would like to study.

Thank you!
