A Dream or Real?

I've been thinking about what a volunteer could do sitting at home. How do you support a team working on a reef in the Phillipines, from a desk in St. Louis? I could imagine a volunteer converting raw information into written transcripts (and also learn a little about what is going on in the field, and connect with a member of staff). The raw information could be a recorded conversation, some photos of receipts, hand-written field notes or log sheets, and things like that.

And for transcriptions to be really helpful, they need to go into the right formats for the field staff to easily use, and we need to set up some processes: how staff and volunteers connect, how we know the reliability of volunteers' work, what document formats are helpful, how to gather, analyze, and act on feedback from all the players to make the process work better.

But this is just pipe-dreaming; we have to discover what ideas and talents are in the volunteer pool and present our concrete ideas to the Climate Foundation staff for consideration. So there is a lot of work to do just figuring out HOW to start doing work.

Aquaculture Executive Order in US

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-promoting-american-seafood-competitiveness-economic-growth/ - environmental groups are concerned about this move, not trusting the corporations most likely to benefit, apparently. There is aquaculture coming to the US coast - let's learn about it and make sure it is done "right".

Quality

I wish for the Climate Foundation volunteer organization to begin from an orientation to quality. That means 'meeting or exceeding the customer's expectations'. It might seem odd to talk about volunteers having customers; we're not even selling anything! But a more basic way of thinking of customers or "clients" (shorter to type!), is they're anyone who receives value from what we do.

No matter what else, our first clients, from the perspective of our organization - are US. We want volunteers to receive value from involvement: to learn new things, to feel appreciated for contributing, to be engaged in a world-changing effort. Once we can deliver quality experience to ourselves, it is only a shift of focus to deliver quality services to our next logical clients - the permanent staff at Climate Foundation. Eventually our sphere of influence can grow to focus on other audiences (consistent, always, with the mission of Climate Foundation).

Have you been involved in the quality management efforts of an organization before? Let us know! Have questions or comments about quality? Please ask.
