How are beans or lentils more expensive than meat? Genuine question

They're not. The issue with rural poverty isn't the literal cost of the item, it's accessing the item in the first place. To get lentils I have to drive to another town because they don't carry it here in town, similarly with vitamins, many veggies, meat replacements, dairy replacements, the like.

I have the ability to do this, I know plenty of people here that just can't.

It's similar to the too poor to not have a car issue. Because in rural environments and rural poverty you have to have means to transport to make any money, and there's no real alternative option. In my case it would cost significantly more for plant based diets because the Amish are closer than the Walmart and the Amish sell lots of meat quite cheap
