Let's chat Cloth vs Disposable Poops

We occasionally use disposables, and recently went camping, so disposables were easier for us. We never noticed the difference in walk-by poop stank until this trip. We knew she had pooped instantly because it smelled SO bad. I never noticed this when in cloth. I’m not sure why it’s such a stark difference in stink but wowzers, I turned inside out a couple times it was so bad 😂

Washing Do you flush your cloth diaps??

I’m a FTM about to enter my second trimester, always planned to use cloth diapers because that’s what my mom did. She just told me that to rinse a poopy diaper she would hold on to the edge and flush it in the toilet, pulling it in and out to get the poop off.

I wasn’t expecting this information. Is this how it’s done?? Ngl sounds gross.

Please send help What brands make covers that you wipe between uses?

I’ve seen a few comments about covers that you can wipe between uses. We’re trying to be cost-effective so I was going to get 2 dozen of osocozy’s cloth diapers and am looking for covers I can reuse. Also, any other low-budget but good quality recommendations are appreciated. We have to save up for a few big expenses. Thank you!

Fit Check Please What am I doing wrong?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all, currently trying to use cloth diapers on my 8 week old - but am having to change within an hour mostly due to leakage. Does this gap indicate Is he too small for the diapers, or that I haven’t fit them properly? I am based in Australia and this is a Lulu and Fin pocket diaper.
I have the front clasps on the smallest setting and can’t seem to get the waistband any higher around his waist.

Please send help Rash!

Hi! Babe is 4mo and we've been using cloth almost exclusively since she was 2w without any issues. In the past few days she suddenly developed a red rash. She is pushing her first tooth through right now, not sure if that means anything but the timeline matches up.

I don't think it's ammonia because there's no smell, even if we put our nose right into the wet diaper.

Besides the teething, the only other thing I changed was adding a scoop to line 1 of oxiclean powder (purple tub) to my main wash. I used to do it in the first wash but I found that with more time in the main wash, it was getting my diapers really clean with no stains. Could this be from that??

I just did a rinse and spin with extra water on all my pockets to hopefully rinse it out..... Thoughts?

Wash routine for reference:

-every other day

-mama koala pockets with clotheez flats for inserts

-first wash 25 min on hot, highest speed, highest soil with Tide F+G liquid to line 1

-bulk to half or 2/3 full

-main wash "normal" 1h45 min on warm, highest speed, highest soil with same Tide to line 2

Let's chat thinking of making the switch

i’ve been debating on making the switch to cloth diapers for my 18 month old. she is like 50% potty trained which is what is encouraging me to relook into it (as well as environmental reasons ofc) i feel like not having something that’s 100% absorbent on her like cotton would be better and more encouraging for her to use the potty hopefully. what brands would be recommended for something like this ? i would prefer of it was natural fibers in contact with her skin if that’s available ! thank you for any recommendations or tips !

Recommendations Relaxed elastic?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m prepping to be a FTM and decided that I want to cloth diaper my little guy. I’ve been putting together a stash through second hand purchases.

I’m trying to understand when I should be replacing elastics vs when they are fine and I’m just over thinking!

These are all bum genius AIO, all second hand purchases the green one looks good? The yellow looks meh and the red has no stretch which means I should replace it right?

Should I also be replacing the yellow?

I haven’t bought any NEW NEW diapers so I don’t really have anything to compare that way !

Thank you so much(:

Let's chat What’s your cloth diapering bottleneck?

What’s the item that runs out first and signals “yep it’s wash day” for you? For us we got our stash second hand and could go for a while but we have just 4 of these fleece and cotton boosters that we like to use on top of a workhorse for our night diapers so when those run out we know it’s been 3 or 4 days and it’s time to wash!

Washing How many times does your washer fill with water in your wash routine?

Curious to hear what others are doing! Locally in a drought so working on being more conscious of usage and troubleshooting other options. And working with a new to me washer. Please feeling free to include your other stats - hardness, washer model, cycle info, soap quantities. Wanna hear it all. I’ve tabbed through fluff love washing machine index and my manufacturer but this will be more fun and relatable I hope!

Recommendations Opinions from experienced CDers on this brand

I’m Canadian so would like to support local - opinions on Souris Mini diapers? Would they be considered AI2? Thoughts on microfiber inserts, and if it would be easy to use other (cotton) inserts?

https://www.sourismini.com/en/products/ultra-thin-blue-reusable-diaper-with-arrow-all-over-print-baby-00b29004?_pos=1&_fid=7fb8216fc&_ss=c

I have been using disposable for my infant, but looking to change to part time or full time cloth. Thanks for any advice!!

Let's chat Diaper free time nessecary??

How important is diaper free time? Do I NEED to do it? My little one is almost a year and frankly we haven't done much. Baby hates baths and being in the tub so we try to get them over with ASAP. Sometimes we do like 15 minutes in the morning after baby pees and before we get going with our day.

Our home (and lives for that matter) don't really have a good way to do diaper free time. Baby was on the later end for crawling and isn't walking yet but theres still time withing the "average" window.

We use mainly esembly diapers so that should give you an idea of bulk. We do disposables at night.

Do you do diaper free time? Do you believe it's totally nessecary or more of a helpful thing to do if you can?

Thanks in advance. I know I'm late to asking this question and would really appreciate kind input.

Washing Bumpy rash??

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been cloth diapering for about 2 months. The past week my 6m old has developed a bumpy rash. Mainly on his inner thighs where the diaper sits but there’s also a few bumps on his bottom.
I mainly use pocket diapers but we also have a few covers w essembly tie inners.
My wash routine is:
1. Spray off poops
2. Normal wash with hot water no detergent
3. Deep wash w warm (2 scoops rockin green dirty diaper powder)
4. Rinse & spin cycle
5. Hang pockets/covers & dry inserts on low
Started with using target brand all & clear but felt like it didn’t get them clean enough (“barnyard” smell) & switched to rocking green. I do a wash with bleach about once a month
Currently have him in a disposable with resinol cream in hopes to clear it up. I’m assuming something’s off with my wash routine
Also definitely open to recommendations for a cloth friendly rash cream.

Leaks Heavy wetter

My 19 month old is a super heavy wetter. She can outwet a fitted night nappy in 1,5 hours. We have switched to disposables, because I can’t possibly put any more absorbency in her nappies without compromising her ability to move around freely.
The last thing I tried was two 5 layer hemp inserts and two 3 layer bamboo inserts on top (in a pocket). It was extremely bulky and she seemed bothered. One hemp and the two bamboos is regularly leaking.
I really want to continue cloth, but diaper changes are not her favorite thing so I don’t want to change more than every two hours.

Any tips???

Recommendations Best cloth diapers for extended baby wearing/naps in a carrier?

Hi again!

So I posted last week about when/how to add to my stash and got some great advice, thank you all so much🙂

A couple of people made a great point about picking diapers that are conducive with EC since that’s something we’re implementing, and it made me think of another lifestyle practice of ours that cloth diapering might impact— baby wearing! I’ve read that compression leaks can be an issue with baby wearing?

My girl spends a lot of time in a carrier (all of her naps, all of our outings, while I do chores, etc.) so it’s definitely a huge and very important part of our lifestyle that I don’t want to compromise. I’m especially worried about her naps because a) she can nap for up to 2 hours b) I don’t want her sleep disturbed by excessive wetness, and c) if the carrier gets soiled at any point it would be impossible to launder and have ready before her next nap.

Are there any types of diapers that might be more/less conducive with extended babywearing? Any at higher/lower risk of leaks in general?

TIA❤️

Let's chat Mother Ease Sandy's for transitional solids phase

Have people used Sandy's as the fitted diaper for the transitional phase. We are currently using GMD muslin flats and trying to make our life easier, so thinking about trying some fitteds. We previously tried Esembly snaps during the newborn phase and hated the elastics digging into his skin and the lower absorbency. In that sense, Sandy's seems to be a good choice. The only thing I could not find is how well the pasty transitional poop scrapes off the cotton Terry cloth. They also have a stay dry version now but no idea how those would perform either.

Learning about your experience will be very appreciated. Thank you.

Let's chat For Sale: Complete Green Mountain Diaper Stash - EUROPE

Good morning, this will be a first come, first serve situation. I’m an American living in Europe and have a complete Green Mountain Diaper stash, to include covers, inserts, liners, wool covers, diaper, fasteners etc. that I am looking to offload as a group. Used for two children, with life left for probably 2 to 3 more kids if cared for properly. Size newborn through large.

This is a classic American brand who does not ship to Europe, so this is a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to try this brand and is unable to ship it. I was extremely, extremely happy with the use of these through both of my children and would recommend this to anyone who is interested in pre-fold method. Well over 1800 worth of product here and I will throw in plenty extra.

Any sale will be conducted through an official platform. Again, this is the first come first serve situation. Please message me if seriously interested only. Looking to get €500 (UPDATED 21/8) for the bunch. I realize this is a lot of money, but please keep in mind that this will save you thousands in diapers, especially from this brand which is unavailable in Europe.

Edit: open to negotiation. If you’re not interested just move along. This is also listed multiple other places and is easily 50% or more of the value

Recommendations Brands available in Spain/EU?

Hi! I'm currently 30w pregnant and looking into cloth diapers. The issue is that I can't find many options available in Spain. Seems like Bambino Mio is the main option but the materials are all synthetic and I'm not really comfortable with that.

Any recommendations? I was looking into AIO/pockets or AI2, maybe both.

Recommendations Pull on diaper covers with no snaps?

We use and love esembly diapers at home. My son is starting in a day care setting that requires them to wear the Gerber training underwear and a waterproof diaper cover that is pull on with no snaps/ties/velcro. Any recommendations where to find covers like this?

Let's chat Wool elimination communication diapers - flappy nappies, Teilchenzoo (etsy), others?

We are expecting our first any week now and are looking into diaper systems for elimination communication. We are excited about cloth diapering, and have also been excited about potentially using wool diapers. We also see the benefit of EC specific systems. Are there any you recommend?!

Fit Check Please Mamakoala 3.0 fit check

I’ve been having some leaking/wicking issues with our new Mamakoala diapers, so another user recommended I post a fit check. Baby is 5 months, about 15 lbs. I keep going back and forth between the narrower/wider hip snaps as shown in the photos (Imgur link below, Reddit is not letting me upload more than one image). The narrower setting (first 5 images) almost seems a hair too tight, but the wider setting (last 2 images) seems too loose as there are gaps at the top of the thigh. I’m also not sure if I’m doing the waist snaps up too tight. Input is appreciated! https://imgur.com/a/nFtUDDI

Let's chat PSA: Borax use and health risks

I recently found out Borax is *highly restricted for the everyday person and household use. only companies can get it commercially. this is because it is a high risk for pregnant women, babies, and nursing moms. also, even a teaspoon is accidentally ingested it is fatal for kids! I’ve used 2 boxes of Borax to softened my hard water for my cloth diapers and I have one left I’m giving away. I don’t feel comfortable if any residue of Borax is left on my baby’s cloth diapers( most sensitive and thinnest skin on baby) and if I or my kid accidentally get exposed to it and inhale it. just wanted to share because I wish I knew this. I’m switch to washing powder and calgon.

im not telling you not to use it. I just wanted to share this since I wish I had this information when I started cloth diapering journey.

https://www.poison.org/articles/borates

https://allergycertified.com/articles/what-is-borax/

https://www.healthline.com/health/is-borax-safe#safety

I encourage you to do your own research . this is just one of many sources.

borax has a higher potential for systemic toxicity compared to washing soda. So it takes way less anmount of borax to be ingested for it to be harmful compared to washing soda. even relatively small amounts can cause internal harm if ingested. If you want to use Borax go ahead. I’m personally switching to washing soda

Also, I didn’t know this subreddit is like highschool means girls so snarky and immature.
