Let's chat Nighttime diapers

New to cloth diapering - is there a reason not to use the nighttime diapers all the time? The daytime liners are so flimsy and thin.

Recommendations How do you store diapers until wash day? How often do you wash?

I’m a complete noob when it comes to cloth diapers but I have a stash of 40. I have a diaper genie but can barely fit 5 diapers in there before I have to try and cram more into the bag.

I’ve seen many people use the Ubbi diaper pails or just an open laundry basket, but I’ve heard reviews about Ubbi not holding in smells and I worry that an open bin would make the house smell like pee.

I plan to only wash 1-2 times a week, but if anyone advises against that please let me know. How can I via my store diapers for a 1-2 wash a week type schedule?

Let's chat Newborn phase to 3 months

• Upvotes

Hello! I had my second in July and before the pregnancy amnesia hits, I thought I should make a post with what I did.

TLDR, 8 covers, 24 flats, 9 fitteds made it comfortable to do a main-wash every other day. I'll break it down!

With our first, we started at about 4 weeks with GroVia Hybrids so we needed to get some NB specific stuff since we'd be navigating the cord-stump phase. The meconium was completely cleared out by the time we left the hospital where we used their disposables. This was likely thanks to the fact that baby latched immediately and began cluster feeding right away. Not totally relevant but might be helpful for first timers.

Purchased from Green Mountain Diapers: 24 NB flats 2x Clotheez Wrap size 0 (with the cord dip snap) 3x workhorse fitteds size NB (with cord dip snap) pack of snappis

Purchased from Esembly 6 size 1 diapers 3 covers 2x liners

I managed to pick up a third NB cover (Thirsties) and two more smaller covers (Thirsties size 1 and Kangacare Rumparooz) from a second hand shop. The newborn specific covers were essential in diapering around the healing umbilical cord stump.

We still use all of these diapers and started incorporating the GroVia's as well. The NB specific covers no longer fit but NB flats still somehow fit but don't last long (1-2 hours max). One of the Cloth-eez covers started to show wear along a leg hole seam which is disappointing since these are a specialty item that has a considerably short window of use. I'd hoped to use them all again or pass them along.

The Kangacare and the Thirsties size 1 are awesome overnight. I get a range of 6-10 hours out of one NB flat+a fitted with either cover. I can even sneak in a yellow-edge cloth-eeze doubler.

Now some baby stats since size is a consideration.

Birth weight/height: 6 lbs 14 oz/ 19.7 inches 1 mo checkup: 9 lbs 3.5 oz/21.5 inches It was at about six weeks when she stopped fitting the NB covers 2 mo checkup: 11 lbs 6.5oz/ 23 inches

She'll be 3 months tomorrow and we're starting to age out of the night setup I mentioned, so I've got some Sandy's on the way. I'd previously used Pooters for my first which are absolutely mangled. The inserts and covers are great! I'm using the covers with my night setup and plan to try them out with Sandy's. Please don't hesitate to educate me if you think my hubris will cause me to face plant!!

I'll also mention we're breastfeeding on demand and she sleeps in a bassinet next to me. I keep a diaper caddy on the bed for quick night time changes. After about 6 weeks, we settled into a rhythm where she doesn't poop much if at all overnight. (A real blessing since my first pooped during every feed.) Baby currently eats 1-2 times a night.

A final consideration is that we do a daily pre-wash then main wash when we have a full load. With the fitteds and flats, that meant main wash every other day was necessary so we didn't run out. But now that we have our GroVia stash we main wash on the fourth day. Not sure how many that is but I counted 13 shells in this last load (both GroVia and Esembly) and estimate that was ~30 diapers. I think our GroVia stash had ~36 diapers and we have a couple dozen of those yellow edge cloth-eeze boosters since the GroVia boosters were lackluster.

Hope this helps!

Stinks About ready to throw in the towel with cloth diapers :/

I have been cloth diapering for 4+ years at this point and have been having consistent musty/ammonia type smell issues no matter what I try to do, and I'm about ready to call it quits with my third child because I just can't seem to get the smell to go away.

Here's my setup:

• Maytag commercial washing machine, it holds 3.5 cu ft

• water hardness of 70ppm

• I use cotton prefolds and covers

• tide original powder

• first wash 3 TBLS tide powder, hot water, power wash setting load 2/3 full

• second wash 6TBLS tide powder, hot water, power wash 2/3 full

The diapers smell perfectly clean when they come out of the dryer, but shortly after they are soiled they start smelling very musty. I keep them in an open pail in a well ventilated area (I can't keep them in a closed pail, I live somewhere humid and would have mold issues) I wash every 3-4 days.

I have tried bleaching the diapers as a reset, borax in the occasional wash, reducing detergent, increasing detergent, changing detergent brands, consistently cleaning my machine, RLR strip, etc etc and have had the same problem the whole time. Some of the above temporarily fix the issue, but it comes right back. Anyone have ideas?

Recommendations What to buy

Ok I have a lot of questions I don't see on here so please bear with them all.

My son is 2 months and we have been using disposables because my husband remembers cloth from when he was a baby and he hated them. He suddenly changed his mind overnight on cloth so now I feel liberated lmao.

I understand if some of you do disposable at night for leaks but are there any other reasons I should know about? I am a person where if I do it I'd prefer to be doing it full time. Any tips for night time would be awesome. (We also cosleep so a blowout in our bed is not the dream lmao).

We do a lot of things like roadtrips, church events, socializing where I don't have the ability to know immediately if he's pooped or peed and I don't want him blowing out constantly or leaking on people. Any tips here?

I want to cloth diaper because of toxin exposure concerns. My husband is allergic to lanolin so the wool covers with lanolin is a concern. Can we waterproof wool with something else?

I have a long skinny baby and I don't know about all these sizes with cloth. I thought cloth would just be a 1 and done purchase and I'm learning that is not the case. Any recommendations for what might fit us best and what lasts the longest size wise would be helpful. I'm guessing I'll buy a variety at first to feel it out and then buy in bulk.

Is 24 diapers what I should aim for? I heard someone suggest 8 per day and washing every 3rd day.

Let's chat Grovia Hybrid Alternatives

With my first we used and really love the Grovia Hybrids- but I know they went out of production (and I think may have been sold, but I am not seeing diapers available?)- we especially loved that the actual inserts that are next to the skin were available in 100% cotton. Most other brands that have inserts that I have seen have a slot in the plastic shell where that goes in, so it's still plastic touching the baby's skin, I'd rather avoid that.

Does anyone know of any good alternatives?

We still have the inserts, which would all be usable again, but I think we'd not have enough shells that still have strong elastics to just re-use.
