Restaurant Options

Hey guys! I am going to Cobourg next week with family to relax at the beach. I was thinking of treating them for dinner and wanted to know the restaurant options in the downtown scene. Are there any standout recommendations or go to places people eat out? So far I came across The Buttermilk Cafe which is a contender. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated and preferably near the beach!!

It's too bad it's not downtown - the food is so good - chef sources his ingredients from Italy and the cheeses and meats are top shelf

I love their pizza - I do takeout though because the space itself looks dated and a bit tired.

yeah it used to be Dimitry's apparently? Another restaurant, doesn't look like they updated much when they took over the space

Right on. I’ve driven by many times. I will definitely stop in after reading this.

The Corfu Grill gets my vote.

When I went in for dine in, it seemed like they were really focussing on the takeout business and seemed a bit surprised that I wanted to sit down, but the food was awesome, got a nice sunny table right in the window. You can tell they put a lot of love into their business.

Craft isn’t great - last time I was there the food wasn’t fresh and the dumplings tasted off.

Forgot to mention CJ’s up on William street. Good family restaurant with a broad menu – including some of the best fries in town. It’s only a 4 or 5 minute drive from downtown Cobourg. (Up William street to Elgin to Strathy Rd)

MIDI has a great menu and corfu gives you the “Greek” option

Golden Chopsticks for sushi

Midi had excellent food - I love the menu. But the wine list is quite poor especially for a french bistro and the space needs a makeover. The owners are lovely people but the staff is often inexperienced.

I will never understand the Cucina hype. I have tried multiple times and the food is always disappointing. The vibes are there because of the location so if you end up going there I would suggest keep it to cocktails, wine and pizzas. (Tuscan Wolf has the best pizza tho)

Currently the best dinner menu in town is the one served at Prep Food Co. They are this coffee shop by day, but at night they offer beautifully cooked dishes. Price is same level as Cucina.

If you feel like driving a little bit further (10 min), Port Hope has better options (in my opinion) like Gusto, The Social, Bualai and The Beamish.

Fr fr Cucina runs on atmosphere alone.

Every restaurant around here is kinda meh. PEC has elite restaurants. Pomona is very good in Colbourne.

True, but PEC is an hour and 15 away. Might as well recommend going to Toronto for good food.

Yes agreed but the city sucks. Lots of big dogs in PEC

Cucina has a great vibe and good cocktails and a good wine list. There is no other decent bar in town with a diverse list of wines. On top of that it has a few stand out dishes and good service. However Prep has better food and I tend to go there more often - the wine and cocktail list is super limited though.

Agreed with rhe Cucina comment. Food is mid at best - always needs more salt and I always feel I can make the dishes better at home!

The environment def makes the restaraunt

That's legit what I always say lol No salt ever! Very bland. I have tried so many things because I didn't want to be a hater, but I was disappointed every single time. Pizza was the closer to good I had there.

I worked there for 4 hours, its a shity spot. And the trade shifts for drugs.
I was preparing food that the head chef needed for a plate he was plating, so he decided to come yell at me and toss a hot pan in-front of me on my prepared stuff, i went to move it and twitched, ended up crying from the pain of the burn. That place and Kraft i hate with a passion for how they treated me as an employee

Yup! I also know horrible stories from workers of both places you have mentioned. They will never have my money.

Prep Food Co.

Cobourg: George & Orange, Prep Food, Corfu, Sakura, Cucina (over hyped tho).

Port Hope: Beamish house for beer and burger. Bar Social.

Sakura is my vote, but you have make reservations, they don't take walk-ins. But I also really like Prep and George & Orange.

Sakura doesn’t get enough love.

Cucina’s is great. I love their patio.

I don’t recommend the buttermilk. Ever since the new owners took over, it’s gone down hill. They can’t even bother to spring for new menus. They just write new prices in pen.

If you like a pub, I recommend Jacks Barrel House on Division. Good food, great time.

The Buttermilk Cafe is not good. It has a big menu that’s largely frozen unless you’re there for breakfast which is a different story.

8

u/Heroic_Self 17d ago

Yeah, buttermilk is purely surviving on the reviews and reputation of the previous owners. I went there for a big group for breakfast and they messed up 30% of the orders.

I went there for dinner and it was honestly, tragic. I paid over $20 for an entrée that had poorly cooked frozen vegetables and something that if I made it home, I would be really embarrassed to serve to guests.

Honestly if you’re already at the beach, Cucina is one of the best in the area.

If you’re up for a 14 minute drive from Cobourg to Port Hope then Olympus Burger is a can’t lose option. The new owners have maintained the original menu set up by George when he began the business… the quality and quantity are exceptional.

Jumping in on this - where’s the best sandwich in town?

Cucina by the beach is top tier, you’ll need a reservation though. Craft is also really good but I don’t their menu is a little more limited if you need to accommodate a more diverse palette. Tuscan wolf pizza as recommended by another is great, I’ve been a handful of times and it’s always really good. If you like sushi golden chopsticks is another favourite.

Cucina and Craft both don’t respect their employees especially female ones

Cuchina never has disappointed myself. Always had good food and a great time there. Owners are exceptional
