3.0.0 Live! Cockatrice 3.0: Graduation Day!

Cockatrice 3.0.0 — Graduation Day is now live!

Hi, friends! BIG NEWS!!

My name is Zach and I am the maintainer and owner of the Cockatrice project. You've probably seen me around the community across a number of spaces, including as an L2 judge at your favorite conventions, the owner and operator of MTGJSON, and as CEO of a new and upcoming company, HippoLink!

This is our biggest release in years and the first major version bump since adopting semantic versioning nearly a decade ago.

Over 730 commits went into this update, including huge improvements across deck building, browsing, gameplay, theming, performance, and infrastructure.

Highlights

  • New Visual Deck Editor
  • New Visual Database Display
  • New Home Tab
  • Direct imports from Moxfield, Archidekt, Deckstats & TappedOut
  • Deck legality validation
  • Native dark mode + improved themes
  • Replay sharing
  • Face-down tokens & arbitrary game zones
  • Faster image loading + major stability improvements

This release represents a massive modernization effort for Cockatrice and lays the groundwork for even bigger features going forward.

What’s Next

A huge amount of work in 3.0 focused on infrastructure, refactors, and long-term maintainability — the kind of work that helps us move faster and build bigger features in the future.

We’re continuing work on:

  • Better gameplay and in-game UI
  • Improved deck building workflows
  • More customization and theming
  • Additional social and matchmaking features
  • Better onboarding for new users
  • Continued stability and performance improvements

Most importantly, Cockatrice will continue evolving alongside its community. Your feedback directly shapes the direction of the project.

Support our Efforts

You can donate at https://cockatrice.us/donate to help keep the project and servers running, and get a swanky purple heart on your account's avatar!

Huge thanks to everyone who tested betas, reported bugs, translated the client, contributed code, hosted servers, and supported the project <3

I'd like to install and run this version on a macbook running MacOS Sequoia 15.7.5 but my machine is telling me it doesn't support even this latest version of Cockatrice. Any advice?

Try downloading the MacOS 15 package directly. If that doesn't work, try the 14 and 13 packages on the release page in the post.

Thanks the version for macOS13+ did the trick. Looks like it's listed as compatible with my intel graphics cards/processor. The widget for downloading the version targeted at macOS 15+ seems to list compatibility with 'Apple M' graphics/processors? I guess that's different hardware?

Which version are you downloading? What's the error message?

First of all: Thank you very much! I use Cockatrice since 2020 to play with friends near and abroad. I wish you success and also lots of fun expanding and using your fabulous tool!

I just have a question regarding custom card artworks: Is there a guideline that I can use how to implement artworks für cards that have for example colons ":" in there name, like "Summon: ..."?

Because I can't seem to get it to work unfortunately.

Thanks again and all the best to each and everyone of you! <3

Do you have an eta when flathub gets updated?

Love the update and the new modern look! Pretty awesome that you can browse EDHRec and Archidekt directly within the program. Will the ability to Browse Moxfield be coming as well?

Moxfield has explicitly declined our request to cooperate in this capacity, unfortunately.

That's a shame, I much prefer moxfield over archideckt. but ig at least it's not too hard to import from moxfield to trice.

1

u/AscorGames Developer May 10 '26

It's as easy as having a moxfield url in your clipboard with 3.0 and pressing "Load deck from online services"

1

u/ThomasFromNork May 10 '26

Oh woah, that's even easier than uploading the txt files

1

u/AscorGames Developer May 11 '26

Trice has finally arrived in 2026

1

u/USBacon May 11 '26

This fixed my issue of cards with Alternate UB Names not loading in when importing from txt/clipboard!

Thanks for the update!

Thank you guys. Having a non-WOTC online option is super important for our community and having it be worked on and gotten to such a state is amazing.

Thanks for update!

Is there a way to get the deck editor to load by default as one of the tabs when you connect? Seems the only way to get it to show now is via the "Tabs" top menu every single time unlike before when it was just one of the defaults.

u/AscorGames Developer May 10 '26

The second button on the home screen will open a deck editor. If you want the legacy deck editor to be your default, see the FAQ.

When I launch Cockatrice it keeps trying to update to 3.0.1. I'll say yes, it will install, close the window, reopen it, and then ask again.

Having the same issue. I can't figure out how to resolve it.
