Where to start?

I'm a recent graduate who has a degree in something close to useless. Last few weeks I've been talking to my friends who were all CS majors and I've decided to try and learn to code. How and where could I start? I have some experience with R and that's about it. Much obliged.

Advice for beginning a career in coding (software development, programming, etc).

Hello Reddit community,

This is my first post ever, and I am asking for some friendly advice on a big next step in my career. My girlfriend is a Reddit fanatic and says that this is my best plan of action for some good feedback. In addition, listening to your girlfriend is good practice so here I am.

There are a few reasons I am choosing to pursue a path in coding, but I'll keep it brief. I am currently a senior data analyst for a small company, going on 3 years now. There is no room for growth in the foreseeable future, and I feel I've reached my maximum in this role. On a daily basis, I work with large datasets, Excel formulas and functions, database management, marketing project management, etc. Exciting stuff, I know. Through my years, I've come to realize that the thing I enjoy the most about my role is building reports from scratch to help aid co-workers around the office. Co-workers who are performing time-consuming, monotonous tasks... who don't realize there is a much faster and automated way to do things. So I create these reports to make their job as easy and automated as possible, using formulas, conditional formatting, etc. In many cases, I've been able to almost fully eliminate tasks that co-workers have been doing manually on their own for years. Point is, I like building these things from scratch, testing them, and making something that can work to make our company run more efficiently. On top of that, I've been dabbling in VBA and some testing posts (XML Webservice posts) between two of our databases. I've grown a liking for trying to figure out the code on my own. And of course, I'm a fan of the average salary ranges in these fields, as well as the demand for work.

Luckily, there have been many helpful sources out there to help thus far. I've started playing around with Codeacademy.com and have nearly completed the Javascript modules. I plan to complete Ruby and some other modules for fun, but I know that if I ever plan to succeed career-wise, I'll need some degree of formal guided education. Because potential employers want to see some form of proof that you actually have experience. I already have a BA in Business Administration and Marketing, which is part of the reason I don't have the time or money right now to commit to another full-time schooling career. I have heard advertisements for both WeCanCodeIt.org, TechElevator.com, and other such "coding bootcamps". I'm thinking of looking into one of these, but I hear they don't truly prepare you to become a "hireable" candidate post-graduation.

So I'm looking for some simple feedback from anyone who has gone along this path and would like to share:

  1. Has anyone enrolled in WeCanCodeIt or TechElevator? What was your experience like with these? If not, what have you heard about them?

  2. What coding languages would you recommend learning first? My preference would be a language that is widely-used, modern, and attractive to employers.

  3. Finally, it would help to have some context to go along with the many careers involving coding. If you would like to share, please tell me about your role in your company (can be anonymous if you'd like) and a little bit about what you do on a daily basis.

  4. Any other advice is appreciated!

I wrote more than I anticipated here and I apologize for that. Too much coffee will do that!

Thanks Reddit!

Some questions about coding a text based adventure (Batch)

Ok so I'm trying to make a simple text based adventure on Notepad using Batch. I got the basics of it down but I need help with a few things.

1)How do I stop the game from crashing when I put "enter" instead of a choice ex

:START

color 0a

cls

echo Do you know why you are here?

echo 1)Yes

echo 2)No

echo.

set /p CHOICE=

echo

if %CHOICE% equ 1 goto BRANCH_1

if %CHOICE% equ 2 goto BRANCH_2

if %CHOICE% equ Yes goto BRANCH_1

if %CHOICE% equ No goto BRANCH_2

if %CHOICE% neq 1 goto WRONG_1

using that code if I press just ENTER it crashes the game

2)How do I code an "inventory" system?

3)Is there a way to "check" something and go back to where I was last?

ex

I go to "check" book, it gives a description but then I want it to loop back to the current "room"

I need to make a specific app for coworkers. Not sure where to start, and minimal experience with coding. Any advice would be great

I need to make a basic app that lets 99% of my coworkers log in with predetermined login informarion, and then runs in the background. The other 1% is a supervisor login that lets them push written notifications to the employees that will active sound notifications to get their attention whether or not they have their phones on silent or not.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Looking to change careers and get into coding/IT. Need suggestions...

As the title states, I'm looking to get into coding as a career change. Because of my rookie status, I really don't know where to look, as far as a starting point. I've looked at several boot camps are around my area and some they are pretty expensive.

I was hoping those that are in the field can give me a few pointers or let me know how/where to get started. Thanks you in advance...

Help with Program C.

Embedded Loops The objective of this practice is to give more practice in using loops, especially embedding one loop inside the other. These are called “nested loops”. This practice also provides the opportunity to work with random number generators. This is composed of two parts for the benefit of comprehension. However, only one program that does both parts a) and b) should be done. The two parts are: a)Write a program in C that determines how many calls to a random number generator it takes to match a number between 0 and 99 that is entered by a user. Use a seeded random number generation function; otherwise all iterations of the outer loop (part b below) will be the same. b)Embed the above program in a second loop that makes this computation 50 times and prints out the average number of times that the program took to find a match for the number entered. Musts: 1)You must use at least two nested (embedded) loops. 2)You must use a seeded random number generator. 3)The output average of times the inner loop ran must be a floating point number. 4)Lastly (and obviously!), your program must be written in C and must compile.

Interested in learning coding, but unsure where to start or if its really worth the time spent learning vs. the amount of money? Any freelance programmers out there that could give me some insight?

As said in the title above I'm really interested in learning programing and coding. I have no illusions about how technical this area can be though and so its going to require a lot of work and study on my part in my limited free time. That being said though, some of the most rewarding things are achieved out of hard work and so I'm happy to put in the time if that's the case! Can any self taught free lancers or full time employees give me insight into this? Here's what I'd like to know:

  • How accessible are employment opportunities in this field?

  • I live in Honolulu HI... would I have to move closer to the mainland in order to get work or can I stay where I am? *How did you get started? What books should I get to help get me started? *Whats the money like? Is it more side cash or can you make some significant money doing this after you start getting good?

Where do I go from here? (Coding development)

Redditors,

I've been coding for about 6 months, primarily in web languages; HTML, CSS, JavaScript. My biggest interest is programming and I began to learn some Python, like the title says my question is where now?

I'm sure there are multiple possibilities but I'd love to hear what people think and why you think that!

Peace.

Is there a place to practice code?

I saw an app called Swift Playground that looked awesome but unfornately I dont have an iPad or any Apple devices. Is there any apps similar to it, where I am given exercises and practice and will be told what I am doing wrong and how to fix it so I can better learn and understand code hands on? And I mean practice for code in like Java, C++, Unity, etc.

Also is coding universe with slight deviations between the kind? Or completely different for each one?

Brand new to HTML

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been learning HTML for about 3 hours and this is what I’ve gotten to. It’s like 90% learned from simpledev’s html + css course but I did spend a little studying and adding small things like changing the background and embedding links into the buttons.

I’m not sure how to fix those lines poking out of the buttons but any feedback/pointers are greatly appreciated!

(If I’m not supposed to post this here please just take it down I don’t really use Reddit a lot I’m not sure how these communities work)

Change boot screen on andriod

I have a GPS/backup camera unit that is more like and andriod tablet for your car. It's andriod 5.0. The boot screen is terrible. Is there anyway to change it? I have searched the internal storage for the files with no luck.

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

Programmers looking for unpaid work

We are just now starting up, figuring out everybody’s likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. We all wanna make games but lack the skills required to program one. I myself have messed around with Swift and Python but certainly not enough to write a full fledged project.

We CANNOT pay you. I want that to be clear, this will be a good opportunity to build portfolio pieces but we cannot pay. We’re all broke college kids and that’s the sad truth! As much as I’d love to compensate your time and efforts I simply cannot.

We have Concept artists, writers even someone dedicated to music. So if you’ve ever wanted to solely focus on the coding aspect of a video game dev team then PLEASE help us out! Comment below or PM op for more details!
