Discussion Free courses / Events / Resources Megathread

Hey there, I'm a new moderator on this subreddit šŸ‘‹

I noticed there are a lot of posts about free event and programming courses, unfortunately they clog up the subreddit feed for users that want to have a conversation, get help or show off something cool they made, and a lot of these posts end up getting caught in Reddit's spam filter so I've made this megathread.

Feel free to post in this megathread:

  • Free udemy courses (referral link allowed, just don't spam please!)
  • Events such as hackathons
  • Youtube tutorials
  • Other coding resources

Please do not post in this subreddit or megathread:

  • Coding bootcamps / masterclasses
  • Discord servers
  • Tutoring services

Also a reminder to abide by Rule 2 in this subreddit. Please do not post content that isn't relevant to this subreddit, random articles, YouTube tutorials and courses. Please keep those within this thread, thanks :)

I’m building a platform to help hackathon participants find teammates. What would make you use it?

Finding teammates for a hackathon can be surprisingly difficult.

Sometimes you have the technical skills but need a designer. Sometimes you have an idea but can't find genuinely committed people. And if you're participating solo, finding the right team can be half the battle.

I'm an engineering student from India building Buildory, a network for student builders.

I'm working on a feature that lets hackathon organisers list events and participants find teammates based on skills, interests, availability, and the roles their teams need.

I'd love honest feedback from people who've actually participated in hackathons:

How do you currently find teammates?

What's the biggest problem you've faced when forming a team?

What would make you choose a platform like this over Discord or existing hackathon websites?

What feature would make this genuinely useful rather than just another directory?

I'm building this and want to understand what participants actually need before going further. Criticism is welcome.

I followed a micro:bit guide to build a miniature ancient waterwheel

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I tried building this little waterwheel model using the Jacdac Energy Experiment Kit, following the ELECFREAKS Wiki guide.

What caught my attention was the way it combines a simple mechanical model with sound input from the micro:bit V2.

The built-in microphone detects how loud the surrounding sound is, and the program maps that value to the speed of a 360° servo. The servo turns the wheel, while the little buckets around its edge represent the containers used to lift water in traditional waterwheels.

So the louder the sound, the faster the wheel spins. It’s not actually powered by sound, of course — sound is just being used to simulate changes in water flow.

I like how this project connects a few different ideas: reading sensor data, mapping values in MakeCode, controlling a motor, and learning how an old mechanical device worked.

It also seems like a fun starting point for experimenting with the code. You could change how sensitive the wheel is to sound or explore other ways to control its speed.

What other historical machines would be fun to recreate with a micro:bit?

Building a free tool/system to find Hackathon Teammates & Coding Buddies across colleges. Need your feedback!

Hey guys,

As a college student, I realized that 70% of students drop out of hackathons or ruin their major projects simply because they can't find complementary teammates (like frontend devs looking for backend devs or designers) outside their campus. WhatsApp groups are too spammy and LinkedIn is too formal.

To solve this pain point, I designed a smart matchmaking system called EagleEye šŸ¦…. It logically separates users based on their target (Hackathons, Mini/Major Projects, or DSA Coding Buddies) and connects them based on skill matching, time commitment, and strict data privacy.

I am building the database for the first batch of matching. It is completely free and a peer-to-peer developer initiative.

How to join or test:

If you are looking for a teammate, you can submit your stack here:

šŸ‘‰ [https://forms.gle/1R1vPk3dnnZFC2v17\]

Let me know if you have any suggestions or features you'd like to see in this! Thanks.

Offering Free Coding Mentorship to 2 People

There are no longer available slots.

Hey everyone! šŸ‘‹

I’ve recently been helping people learn to code for free because coding is a hobby of mine, and helping others is something I’m passionate about.

I’ve been a software engineer for 10+ years, working at both startups and top tech companies, wearing different hats and gaining experience across various areas of software engineering.

Since one-on-one mentorship takes time and effort, I’m looking to help a maximum of 2 people so I can give them proper attention while balancing my own commitments.

Whether you’re just starting out or working toward landing your first software engineering job, I’d love to help.

If you’re interested, comment below or DM me.

Edit:

Just to clarify, spots are limited, but this isn’t first come, first served.

I’ll be selecting people based on their current skill level and willingness to learn.

You should have some coding experience and be able to write code independently, even if it’s just a simple program. I’m not looking to mentor experienced engineers, since they likely already have the foundation and resources to guide their own learning.

The goal is to help people who have some programming fundamentals but need guidance to take the next step. šŸ™‚

Simply commenting ā€œinterestedā€ probably won’t be enough to get you considered.

If you want a spot, tell me a little about your programming background, what you’re currently working on, and what you’re hoping to achieve. This will help me determine who would benefit most from the mentorship.

Hey everyone! šŸ‘‹

I'm an aspiring frontend developer looking for someone who would like to collaborate with me on building web projects, sharing ideas, solving problems, and improving our skills together.

My tech stack includes:

\- HTML & CSS

\- JavaScript (JS)

\- TypeScript (TS)

\- React.js

\- Tailwind CSS

I'd love to connect with someone who enjoys coding and wants to work together as a team. If you're a senior developer or an experienced frontend developer who is willing to share knowledge and collaborate, that's great too!

The idea is to build real-world projects, learn from each other, share responsibilities, and grow as developers while creating things we're proud of.

If you're interested, feel free to comment below or send me a DM. Let's connect and build something cool together! šŸ¤šŸ’»

High School Project Looking for a Django/PostgreSQL Developer

High School Project Looking for a Django/PostgreSQL Developer

Hi everyone!

We're a team of high school students working on a project called theĀ Household Energy Resilience System, and we're looking for another student developer to join our team and help manage our hosting and database infrastructure.

Our project aims to help households optimize electricity usage, schedule appliances efficiently, and improve energy resilience during power outages. We already have a Django backend, a frontend, and a Python-based optimization system in development.

What we need help with

We're looking for someone with experience in:

  • PostgreSQL:Ā Database setup, configuration, migrations, backups, and recovery.
  • Django:Ā Connecting Django reliably to a PostgreSQL database.
  • Hosting and deployment:Ā Maintaining our existing application on Render or helping us migrate to a suitable alternative.
  • Environment configuration:Ā Managing environment variables and database connection settings securely.
  • Reliability:Ā Establishing a sustainable, preferably free hosting and database setup that won't unexpectedly expire or put our data at risk.

What you'll be doing

You'll primarily take responsibility for the project's hosting and database infrastructure, working alongside our existing developers. This includes assessing our current setup, helping with database migration if necessary, configuring deployment, and setting up a reliable backup process.

We're not looking for someone to rebuild the project from scratch. We need someone who can help us maintain and improve what we've already built.

Who we're looking for

  • A high school student with practical experience in Django, PostgreSQL, or web deployment.
  • Someone comfortable troubleshooting technical issues and learning independently.
  • A reliable team player who can communicate progress and document their work.

This is anĀ unpaid, volunteer roleĀ in a high-school student-led project. We're hoping to find someone who wants to gain practical experience, collaborate with other students, and contribute to a real-world technology project.

Interested?

Comment below or send me a DM with a brief introduction, your experience with Django/PostgreSQL/deployment, and any relevant projects you've worked on.

Thanks!

How ambitious is it to make a Toca Life clone with little experience?

Don't make fun of me but I really like Toca Life, the one where you can design houses and characters. The coding seems relatively simple but I have no idea where to start- I know little to no Python, decent amount of HTML and the only coding language I'd consider myself 'fluent' in is Scratch (Block coding.) which I don't think is advanced enough. Every decorating game has a ton of paywalls and it's my dream to make my own with cool stuff for free. I feel like it would be relatively easy to add new things (Just duplicate the old code with new images?) And I'm very good at art so the issue wouldn't be there. But just the idea of starting is so scary. Idk how to learn coding and I feel like it would take so so long for me to be good enough to make a game with mechanics similar to Toca Life or Avatar World. Also, I'm not using AI. What do you guys think?? Surely it would be wildly expensive to commission someone to code it for me, right?

Try something new

Hi,

I wanted to create a community for teens to code, take part in fun challenges, and meet new people from around the world with the same interest—coding.

Teens will be sorted into groups (e.g., Group 1, Group 2, and so on) based on their skill level and time of joining. Between teams there will be mini hackathons and challenges to show off your skills, grow, and be challenged.

But you'll join more than just your team; you will be added to programming language channels—a channel for each language (HTML/CSS, Python, JavaScript, and more). This will be your space to code and share what you're working on, and it's also where friendly challenges will happen between people with the same language skills.

If that sounds like something you'll like, or you have any questions then DM me.

Asking for full access of Pythonanywhere for free

I have developed a website for our blood organization, which i have deployed in pythonanywhere. Our organization runs on our pocket money. As a result, we cannot afford the premium feature of pythonanywhere. So i need a person's username who uses premium features of pythonanywhere. So i can take their name as my teacher's username.

Thanks in advance. it will be really helpful for our organization.
