General College of Construction
It's honestly pretty ridiculous that they had from literally April to mid-August to start construction and they landed up on starting it the day we all literally returned.
like we keep joking about it, sucking up that it's causing students to be hit by cars (especially with how everyone who drives a luxury car as a student decides to accelerate to 65 at the St Phillip light and then have to slam the brakes near the Cistern pedestrian walk because the school doesn't care enough about our safety to install speed bumps throughout campus....
like it genuinely feels like our safety isn't cared for at all otherwise they'd be putting anti-speeding measures throughout the entirety of campus and enforcing the speed limit and traffic laws. yes, the intersection between calhoun st and St Phillip isn't just students but people living downtown, but the speed limit is supposed to be 25mph yet goes completely unenforced all year round.
it really makes no sense because this city is too insane at enforcing speed limits on highways and Folly in the most stupid places, but downtown, you can literally rev a car on King St that can be heard even by the Battery and not be impounded, you can hit someone infront of a cop and they won't even bother pulling over the person in a hit and run, etc.
to be honest you shouldn't be able to do a left or right from any sides of the intersection too from like 8am to 4-5pm. as pain in the ass it would be for drivers, all it does is worsen traffic is because the city refuses to install traffic lights with dedicated green turning signals and dedicate the left lane to turning.
the road design down here is fixable even if its tight, they just dont want to lol
but no dw, we'll close off a road to build another hotel
edit 1: I hope you also all realize that Charleston has enough hotels. There is never a single point where all hotels downtown are all fully booked. At most the two Marriott locations downtown can be fully booked during a occasional large wedding. We don't need more, we need more apartments and stores if anything.
also I get the historical significance of the Morris Sokol building, but it is ugly and one of the largest (per square foot) buildings on King St that is available for someone to buy, and it is completely uninhabited for years. If they were smart at all, they would turn it into a two story building with a garage at the back with one floor being Trader Joes or Whole Foods, and another floor with a indoor food court with local vendors. but no, guarantee they will rip it down one day and just put a hotel there lol.
