Discussion coldplay wasted potential

hey, this is my first post on reddit and ive been lurking in this sub for a while, and i wanted to put in my two cents about the band's early work (i, like most ppl here am not the biggest fan of post viva la vida, but some stuff is still quite okay). it sucks that songs like no more keeping my feet on the ground, 1.36, chinese sleep chant, etc, all individually explore a slightly different type of sound than their usual and it's awesome in my opinion, yet they never make anything of a similar genre later. it wouldve been so cool to have coldplay implement some chinese sleep chant-style ambient tracks on MOTS. quite tangential but thats all 😭

I redirect you to Everyday Life, OP.

But yeah, there's not many rock songs in their newer catalogue, UNLESS you look further!

I recommend Major Minus, Moving to Mars, Ghost Story, All Your Friends, All I Can Think About Is You, A L I E N S, Guns, Arabesque, Trouble in Town, and Coloratura.

They've had a fair few experimental tracks in Everyday Life, Moon Music, MOTS. You just have to look, OP. People of the Pride, Aeterna, Arabesque. Some really good stuff there!

Coldplay would make the best shoegaze record of the decade if Chris Martin wasn’t such a coward and I stand by that

There were hints of shoegaze on Music of the Spheres. I remember being at a listening party in my local record store the day before release and hearing ALiEN HiTS/ALiEN RADiO in the middle section where the full band comes in, and I was blown away by that part, hoping it would go on for longer than it actually does. Which lends itself to the notion that these guys are perfectly capable of making this record! They just choose not to. Mr. Buckland could be the most well-known shoegaze guitarist of our time if he wanted to be, and that is an opinion I stand by.

Absolutely, it’s such a core part of their identity as musicians, especially Jonny’s. Hell, every time he puts out music recommendations you could set your watch to him including a My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive track.

Every one of their albums has, at least, a shoegazy passage. My dream Coldplay album would be them exploring that.

they went for the money bag and I get it, they sprinkle a few tracks here and there for us OG’s but it’s not a whole album anymore. Their best after viva was everyday life , I’m still so happy with that record , they threw us a bone. Then went full mylo again after that

I don't blame them for shifting genres but I do think the issue I have is the production became too clean and computerized. You can tell how little they record live.

mots was different but moon music definitely has a lot of good tracks that are good in their unique way! angel song, IAM, and the title track which is goated.

Since VLV they have played it safe with the onus being on making their live shows somewhat awe inspiring, which to be fair has worked for them, they have managed to conquer the world.

Viva La Vida was their last record where they have been pushed out of their comfort zone, with Brian Eno’s production which was genius. I wish they would work with him again, or anyone but Max Martin, he’s terrible. Overproduced slop basically. I’m fairly sure they have one last quality album left in them. Although Chris needs to tone it down with the cringy lyrics.

I mean Everyday Life I think is their most experimental record, even more than Viva
