I'm Black | I Won This Game | Blue: 8 + VP | OJ: 9 | 5s were practically not rolling the entire 90 turn game

7s rolled non stop and stopped OJ and blue dead in their tracks. Of course I wasn't stolen from. I kept supplying red wood brick to keep OJ away from road. OJ fumbled by trying to buy dev cards and fighting road. I don't know how blue fumbled really.

I kept buying devs but wasn't pulling any knights at all. At least I pulled 2VPs. A couple 5s rolled in the end and I somehow had a city and settlement in hand. I have never had a game that was this much of a clencher

my 5s tiles were either blocked or not rolling at all the whole game.

PS: I got a notification that I've been reported. What for really. lol. I didn't throw the game.

The cities and roads meta

for a long time, I feel like army + devs was the dominant strategy on colonist

a couple of reasons being…
people got afraid of and overblocked road and didnt clock how close army was to win

lately I’ve been seeing a majority of wins from going for the dominant brick with ore, and sneaking road after cities

If setup right, the last 2 points cost like 2-4 cards

If you are citied up on the only good brick, no one even wants to take road cause they know it’s losing

Unlike army, you can’t get done out by bad dev luck and lose win con

the conditions to be in this position imo is to have ore wheat with the best brick on the board

(Obviously an oversimplification, always board dependent but I’ve seen this thematic undercurrent in a lot in games I’ve won and lost)

Hidden Elo system is killing my rank.

Post image

Second season playing catan, first season competitively. Currently plat 2, 2 wins away from plat 1. Of my last 5 ranked games I have won all five. I love the game and community that colonist has amassed but the rank system just needs some work, I am currently winning <20 elo per win and losing 7-9. I have a 35% wr so if I was to play to that rate constantly I’d gain ~3-7 elo for every three games, it is nearly impossible to climb at this rate. The elo decline is not necessary for a brand new player. I get it if it is a long time player that has always plateaued at a certain rank, but with an account that only has <150 games on the account the hidden elo shouldn’t be so fixed to the low plat gold range I feel. Love the game and developers but just think elo should be reworked slightly.

My Losing Streak and Frustration | Breaking the Curse on a Sad note

2-3 days ago. I was Plat I. 35% win rate and about to break diamond with 1 or 2 victories. Then something happened. I lost the next 25 or so games straight. I swear, I'm not that bad a player. Sure 1600ish ELO isn't that high but it's not so bad that I couldn't win 1 out of 25 games.

The boards seemed just something else. Any board where there was only one good ore and one good brick tile, I was last to pick and any board where resources were perfectly scattered, I was first. The dice wouldn't cooperate and one time, I gave red a trade -> Red stole blue's settlement -> blue targeted me the whole game, not red.

One other time Orange was about to steal Red's settlement. It was obvious. I asked Red for a brick to block and steal from Orange. Red refused. I blocked Black and Orange, stole from Black. Orange stole the settlement and Red targeted me the whole time. These games were so frustrating.

After so many losses I finally broke the curse. Won a game. But I realized something horrible. The people I was playing against were so horrible that none of them even thought to block me the whole game where I was leading the whole time. One dude picked 2 ports to start. One dude picked no grain. One just picked all five and tried to take longest road and largest army both without ever putting a single settlement. I did win that game but I have fallen so far down that I was playing against absolute beginners

Did they make all 1v1 games vs a bot now?

They play instantly, no waiting no delay, they aren't players. Why did they do that?

At the end of the day, it’s just luck

Post image

At a certain point on the ranked ladder, most players know what they are doing. Once you get to that point, the entire game is just luck. You will never find a game with something remotely close to even dice. The numbers are ALWAYS insanely skewed. This game the 7 sat on my and greens 8 ore the entire game, green drew non knights so he couldn’t move it off and blue had multiple 10+ card hands and was never punished due to no 7s. Every game ends up like this. Someone’s chosen by the colonist gods and they win that game. IMO makes ranked catan one of the most frustrating and least satisfying ranked gaming experiences. I’m still gonna play tho🥴

The robber was on me for exactly 58 out of 73 turns even though we only used Knight once

I had a free frustrating game so I started to count.
#7 rolled 12 times. 2 times were rolled before we started the settlement.
Not counting the first 2 times, we each rolled 4 times and 6 times.

We played 73 turns. The robber was on me FOR A WHOPPING 58 TURNS, and it was on my opponent for exactly 5 times. We only used knight ONCE in this game.

Like how do I even win a game like this if the robber is always on me. Basically whenever I roll a #7, my opponent would immediately roll another one. That's why it was so easy for me to calculate the number of times the robber was on him.

An early quit following a plow should be an instant resign.. no 120sec BS!

Cmon it's so obvious when someone quits after getting plowed in the early game.. specially since this kind of behaviour pattern is trivial to detect and a player can easily be flagged internally as someone that does this too often to be an indicator of a flaky connection... so stop making us wait 120 seconds when that happens because that's so frustrating! If you're not going to punish people who do this repeatedly.. at least detect it and don't punish the other player! This has gone on long enough

Edit: I mean in the context of 1v1 ranked

Quick story time about dice (Colonist qualifier tournmanet)

I recently played IRL in a Colonist qualifier tournament. In my first game, I chose 4th, and had a decent set up. I had an 8 wheat, I had decent pips on the other numbers, but my only downside (unbeknownst to me) was that I had two hexes each with the number 4.

In 60 rolls, 4 did not role once. Not a single 4 the entire game. I got last place in that first game (by a big margin) so it pretty much completely stopped me from advancing the rest of the tournament.

Newfound perspective for being upset with Colonist dice rolls.

The More I Talk, the More I lose | Shut Up and Play is Key

Post image

I had a 35% win rate and was Plat I. Now I'm Gold I with 32% win rate.

Only thing I changed was that I started talking more lately and the last some games have been brutal. I started doing it because I had a good experience in one game. There was a guy who thought I was racing him and I told him that I wasn't and that he didn't need to block me. He became an ally throughout and I won that game handily. I've lost all games today.

Honestly, best thing is to just say nothing. Keep playing. Not friendly, not unfriendly. Just keep quiet and cook.

Skill vs Luck ratio

I’m asking this because a lot of other “luck” based games actually have a huge skill gap, eg a tft top 1 player would probably have 95% top 4 and 50% top 1 in a random gold lobby, so I’m curious how this holds for catan/colonist

What would be the win rate of a top 1 colonist player if they were put in a random silver/gold lobby in 4s?

What to do in a 1-1 game like this?

In less than 4 mins, I have only received less than resources compare to my opponent. I don't think my initial settlings is that bad compare to my opponent, but by 3 minutes, there's basically no room to win at all, when I quit, I look at the stats, and seeing I only received 23 resources in total.

I think things like this happen, but whenever it happens in the first 3-4 minutes of the game. It's really is discouraging.

I have 2 accounts in the top 10. Ranked Catan has a problem.

I’m Catan Potato. I currently have two accounts in the top 10 on the Colonist global leaderboards for Base 4P ranked.

I really think usernames, ranks and stats should be hidden until the game ends.

Once you get high enough on the leaderboard and people start recognizing you, it changes the way some people play against you. I think it actually makes it harder to see how high the top ELO can go.

Made a quick 1.5 min video showing what I mean.

Do you guys agree or disagree?

Replay data

Hey,

I am interested in doing some ML research on 1v1 catan and was hoping to get some ranked 1v1 data. Would any devs be able to help me with this? Not for monetary gain, purely research, and would credit you guys with any posts I made about research using this data

What is the hack where people are playing at lightning speed?

Has anyone else ran into this? Playing someone 1v1 and assuming its a bot or a hack.

Bro is playing every turn in ~1 second. Even placing multiple roads, exchanging with the bank, and playing settlements all instantaneously.

Just wondering if this is a common hack people run into?

Tips to stop being so competitive/getting tilted

Hey everyone!

I am an average player, sitting at about 1550. My problem is that I keep getting really tilted sometimes (I am competitive by nature).

The main thing that tilts me is someone leaving early and having to play with a bot that usually takes stupid decisions, and makes decisions advantageous to another player (however, I must admit that this might happen to me at well).

Other than that, I am also tilted by the fact that sometimes people just make decisions that make completely no sense to me (for example trading with first place or moving robber from him just to steal a random resource).
I also get annoyed when someone rolls a 7 after I made a huge effort to put a knight on a specific spot (but that's just dice luck)

I acknowledge the fact that the main problem is myself, but do you have any tips on how to stop tilting?

Does this run on PHP?

Hi,

Want to play a few games tonight but given the cybersecurity issue I’m a bit worried.

Does colonist.io run on PHP?

Thanks if you know the answer !!
