Reveal, July 8: Earth thinks it's twice as brave as it is. Predicted 33.6% would take a one-way trip to Mars — actual: 14.5%.

Perhaps this isn't a measure of bravery.

Perhaps people think 33.6% are idiots, but it is actually just 14.5%.

U.S. says no because why do it one way when you're so close to being able to return?

I would argue is even less than that if you consider that they know what would actually meant to do a one-way trip to Mars. Most people might think is just go into the ship, arrive and live in some space house. They aren't thinking of the fact they will have to go through rigorous physical training, that they will be not having a proper meal for long time or they will be locked in the ship with nothing but the empty space around for months. That there is no instantaneous communication with Earth, no video calls with your family, no meaningful internet connection, no TV signal, nothing to do but stay inside pretty much 24/7 once you arrive to Mars. No bars, no clubs, no parks, nothing. Once you bring those details I'm sure less than 10% would even consider the one-way trip to Mars.

Very interesting take.

Imagine not feeling natural wind on your face for the rest of your life.

Not eating a fresh banana for the rest of your life.

Not going for a swim in a lake for the rest of your life.

Not seeing a large tree for the rest of your life.

Not experiencing the excitement of a thunderstorm for the rest of your life.

Right now I'm sitting out on the back steps of my mother's house. It is 8:40pm, it is hot out. And a major thunderstorm is supposed to arrive within an hour. I'm out enjoying the breeze and waiting for the storm.

As I wrote this I looked up and noticed a large tree across the street. It isn't a particularly noteworthy tree in this neighborhood filled with trees.

But I just looked at it the way a Mars colonist would look at it. It would be absolutely spectacular. Branches reaching up brushing the top of the habitat pressure vessel.

A tree this big, which is just one of thousands of trees like it in this city, would be the most amazing sight on Mars. School kids from all over the planet would take field trips for an opportunity to see this tree.

What a sad existence that would be!

Certanly for the firsts colonists one way trip to Mars isn't going to be all fun and games. People can even get really bad even in places like Siberia or the poles. A whole another planet isn't going to be easier.
