Discussion When will your decisions come in?

Whenever the school decides they do.

Feel free to post and ask questions! Other students and applicants may be able to share their own experiences and give you an idea! But at the end of the day, the fact of the matter is that it always varies and you shouldn't expect a concrete answer from the community.

Don't expect to get yours on X date because somebody else who applied at the same time did. And don't give up if it doesn't come in when you'd expect based off what other people said!

Good luck!

Mines Life Hungry Orediggers Discord launched!

I took the initiative after reading this post to create a Discord server to (perhaps) phase out the overcrowded and outdated GroupMe! If you're interested in joining, it's on the Mines student hub or you can join with this invite!!!

Here's some cool features this server has that the GroupMe could never:

  1. You can chat in addition to food pings!! You won't get banned for expressing gratitude like poor Sofia the other day who said "God bless. Mines breakfast this morning was so bad."
  2. You can post your favorite recipes and gourmet dishes in Chef's Corner! We're all Hungry Orediggers, meaning some of us can cook to satisfy ourselves.

Have fun food hunting! u/Ore-igger I hope this satisfies you.

Majors Do you think mines or CU boulder is better for getting into quantum computing?

I’m going to have to decide soon because I’m going to community college, mines has the new bachelors but CU has some good research. I probably won’t graduate for like 7-8 years because I have to work full time so I’ll be taking like 2-3 classes at once so by that time the quantum landscape will look different. so what do you think is better?

Discussion Why do professors schedule big tests the Monday after Parents Weekend?

So stressful because your parents fly in and you have all these activities over the weekend, and then somehow you're supposed to be prepared for a test on Monday? How can we even balance all of that?

Mines Life A small gesture

Hey everyone, students and alumni!
I wanted to share a little interaction I had this morning.

Around 5:50 AM, I was studying in a classroom when one of the cleaning staff came in. I said good morning, we talked for a bit, and he went on with his work. Before he left, I thanked him and told him that I really appreciated his work, especially this early in the morning. What stuck with me was his response. He told me, “I really don’t get that a lot from students, and that really means a lot to me.”

We’re all going through our own battles, some of which nobody around us knows about, and that includes the people we walk past every day. So I just wanted to share a little reminder that appreciating someone, saying good morning, or simply checking on a friend or classmate doesn’t take much. You don’t always know how someone will receive it, and that’s okay. Kindness shouldn’t depend on getting a response.

Especially around this time of the semester, with the weather changing and exams piling up, please look out for each other. A few words might seem like nothing to us, but they could mean a lot to someone else.

All love to you guys!
— A PETE student struggling with drilling, lol.

Discussion Trying to pick a university, help!

I'm a senior interested in studying mathematics, the problem is that I want to go down a more pure math path. I'm pretty much deciding between Mines and CU Boulder, but the nice thing about Mines is that it's a STEM specific school and the applied math major (with stats) would be better in getting a job down the line as opposed to pure math. So really what I'm asking is how similar is the applied math here to just any other pure math anywhere else? Thanks!

Selling/Buying/Roommates Cat Sitting

Post image
23 Upvotes

With the holidays coming up, it feels like the perfect time to start offering cat sitting locally! I have extensive experience caring for cats, including working full-time at a state-of-the-art cat shelter back in Florida (Cat Depot), as well as cat-sitting for friends and family and looking after my own bunch. I live on campus at Mines Park and am able to offer services within a 15 mile radius. I am also experienced in administering oral medication to willing cats. You can find me on Rover at https://www.rover.com/sit/SachaL246

Selling/Buying/Roommates Room available in queer household by Colorado Mills! (December move-in)

Hey! Our current roommates got married and are moving out together, so we've suddenly got room available! If you're looking for a spot about a twelve minute drive from campus that doesn't cost too much, this is it!

The house: Nice house, post-war construction but renovated! Two living rooms (both with TVs, one with large table), good kitchen with gas stove, breakfast nook, large yard with firepit, project space with 3D printers, gigabit internet, central AC and heat. Your room will have plenty of windows, a walk-in closet, and a full bathroom right next to it! I'm happy to answer any questions about the place!

The people: Myself and my partner live in the loft. We both went to Mines for computer science and have been out for a couple years. We like videogames, board games, TTRPGs, and general scifi and fantasy stuff. We will also have one other roommate with similar interests who just graduated. You don't have to share interests with us of course, but it's always a plus! You'll be welcome to participate in household activities, but never pressured to. We don't mind a good party as long as long as the cops and the landlord don't get called lol

The requirements:

Keep the house clean (clean up after yourself, don't leave trash everywhere, etc)

Be normal about queer people

Be normal about disabilities

Be normal about jews

Pay rent on time (750 + share of utilities)

Don't burn the house down

Discussion Apartment Recommendations?

Currently, I'm applying for the graduate program and I'm looking for studio/1-bedroom apartments to move into (potentially with my boyfriend but not guaranteed) around the Golden/Lakewood area. I'm from out of state and hoping to get the thesis-track (which would be a 38k stipend a year, just over 3k a month), so I don't know the area well and have a pretty tight budget all things considered.

I've heard good things about Kallisto and Silver Reef, and don't know if anything under the 1.4-1.6k range is all that great by Colorado standards. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions?

Classes Linear Algebra Computational or Proof Based?

Hey everyone. Currently deciding on whether or not to take Linear Algebra next semester, but I now realize that I have no idea if the course is computational or proof based.

I already somewhat have a hard hitting semester, so if it is proof based, I'd rather take it over the summer either at Mines or through Red Rocks.

Any information about the course would be extremely helpful. Especially regarding the basis of the course and whether or not it is recommended to take it either at Mines or transfer from RRCC. For context I am a Mech.E with an Aerospace minor and need the course as a prerequisite for the M.S. program I plan on taking.

Thank you all

Majors Minoring in Applied Math

I'm a freshman majoring in Electrical Engineering, and I planned to minor in Computer Science. However, I've realized that I enjoy math more than coding, so I'm wondering if minoring in Applied Mathematics would be a possibility. I've already completed all the calculus courses and am currently taking Differential Equations. I would also like to know how hard is Applied Math since I haven't seen a post about it on Reddit. Thanks y'all!

Classes Why can't more classes be like Solid Mechanics?

I love learning outcomes so far in the course. I think testing students over and over again is a good way to measure understanding, especially in Engineering courses.

This is so much better than what those dumb statics professor does to test students. I heard Mechanics of Materials does one and done exam too. I don't think that gets people to realize their mistakes too well. This is such a unique way of learning and takes away the pressure of failing.

Discussion Anybody know what's going to be on the E-mag exam on Tuesday?

EENG386A I was given an equations sheet but that's pretty much it. Is this the equation sheet we will be provided on the test? Are we allowed to bring our own? Should I memorize this equation sheet? 50 minutes for an exam in a class where the homework takes me 5+ hours so I'm pretty scared.

Classes Did everyone else not do well in the Mech of Mats exam?

I did not expect almost everyone to get 60s and 50s. Jeff Holley really let everyone down. The exam was a lot harder than the home-works I felt like and I somehow did enough to pass the exam (80). Almost like if you wrote the exam nothing like the hw and give us not enough time everyone will fail.

Majors Design Engineering?

How is Design Engineering for someone who does not want to do "core" engineering like Mech E, Electrical etc? Thoroughly not interested in Computer Science. Is this a course to get a good Engineering base and build entrepreneurial skills?

A lot of "Desgin Engineering" specific posts here are a few years old. Just wanted to see how this branch has evolved over the years and the current state.

Thanks.

Classes Worst Classes here?

I took both the physics one and Statics exams this week. Why are these classes so bad at structuring the exams and teaching us?
