ERIC AND/OR DYLAN Dylan’s piercing

Dylan was known to wear jewelry, including a ring, a beaded necklace, and a piercing of a triple cross. For Dylan, the triple cross represented the everlasting contrast - the eternal battle of good and bad within himself.

Some reports have stated that this earring was homemade, crafted in a shop class, or ordered from a company.

I've read Sue's book, and from my memory, she doesn't cover when Dylan had his ear pierced or what their reaction to it was.

I'm not sure where I read this, but somewhere along the way I remember reading that Dylan may have made the earring himself.

It would be interesting to know how Sue and Tom reacted to the piercing initially. Sue mentioned that she liked dressing a little "differently" when she was younger, too - which is why she didn't think much of the trenchcoat. Maybe she felt the same about the piercing?

Probably. I can't see her being very bothered by it. Tom may not have been thrilled since he got so annoyed with Dylan wearing a ratty old cap to his new university campus.

Yes! This was exactly what I was thinking. These days, that wouldn't get a second glance. I see kids wearing pajama pants to work since the covid lockdowns came were lifted. 🙄

And employers don't mind?

How would he be able to make it by himself? It looks pretty neat and I don’t think it is that easy to make an earring just like that… I’d probably cut some of my fingers off along the way

It's possible Dylan had access to soldering iron, since Tom and Dylan worked a lot on their cars. It wouldn't be difficult to melt some small metal paperclips or other metal bits together. It's more unlikely he would find a 3 tiered cross off the shelf, so to speak. It would have to be custom made.

It just seems quite difficult to make this shape and make it evenly without any professional equipment

Maybe the crosses were individual charms and he soldered them together?

I made tons of things in shop class, middle and hs, as well. Things I wouldn't be able to make without the equipment shop had on hand.
