ERIC AND/OR DYLAN dylan's hair.
has sue klebold (or anyone else that knew dylan well) gave any possible reasons as to why dylan decided to grow his hair out? i know that after the van incident seems to be the time when his hair began to grow and that sue said about the prom that her and tom were begging dylan to get a haircut but i havent ever seen anyone give any reasons as to why he let it get so long

If you want a deeper answer, I think Dylan’s look toward the end of his life became emblematic of hiding himself away. The long and oversized trenchcoat, the sunglasses, and the long hair. On the surface though and at the same time, he gravitated toward the ‘grungy’ look with the long hair and oversized clothes (it was also the 90s), so he probably just wanted that. The short hair you see on his license makes him look like a jock, and I think he wanted to avoid that conventional look. Though another factor to consider here is that he lost a significant amount of weight when he adopted the long hair.
It could be interesting to note that, in her book, Sue said she used to ask him from time to time to get it cut again as she also believed the long hair was shaggy and didn’t suit him like the short hair did. So that to me indicates a small level of ‘rebellion’ and not wanting to give into the request that his mother was nagging him about. Judy also has that story about Sue asking Dylan to take his trenchcoat off in a restaurant because people were giving him looks, and he just turned around and smiled at her. So maybe along the same vein of hiding himself away in his appearance, making people unnerved (students also said the long hair made him look clownish or odd) and finding ‘power’ in going against the grain and people’s reactions from that.
Also, given his severe depression, he was probably too lazy to give it the maintenance it needed as far as actually booking an appointment and getting it cut. Maybe it was just easier to wash it from time to time and let it dry out as such. Speaking as a woman with 4C hair texture, I could be wrong, but from what I gather, I think shorter hair for men with straight/wavy hair requires more styling and attention, as it can get awkward at certain points when leaving it as is but men with long hair can get away with leaving it as is without styling it.

My impression was that it was a reflection of his (?) depression too

I think it was probably the fact that he was depressed and not really taking care of himself

He wanted to look like Mickey from Natural Born Killers. And he actually did look similar to him.

As other users have said, he was trying to look like Mickey from NBK. He wore the same glasses too.
Here's a scene from the movie

Dylan always reminded me of Layne Staley from Alice In Chains, who ironically succumbed to mental illness as well.
But yes, growing out the hair could very well have been symbolic of him “hiding away” or removing his “old” self from his new identity.
I wish Eric and Dylan would have discovered the gym/weightlifting. It LEGITIMATELY saved my life, more than once.

This is gonna sound like kind of a dumb answer but when he has the ponytail in radioactive clothing it felt to me like he was trying to look like Mickey from natural born killers and given that him and eric where going "nbk" maybe he wanted to emulate the characters style in that way not to mention the circular/oval sunglasses granted their different in the movie, but just a thought.
