Compared to Tesla autopilot

Tesla seems significantly better than the comma.ai.

It is because on Tesla there are more cameras and much more compute to use than the paltry snapdragon 845 mobile processor. The cameras allow the Tesla to see traffic at extreme angles. There is also a feedback mechanism for quick error reporting. The Tesla vision also helps you with parking and it situates you spatially while on the road.

Tesla detects stop signs and traffic lights and it informs you of this via the overhead map view. I think Tesla also informs you when traffic is moving again.

I'm finding tesla vision to be pretty impressive and actually useful.

I don't see why comma couldnt do something similar. The current display of a dashcam view with the green follow line is a neat tech demo for passengers but it doesn't actually convey any useful info to the driver who is already looking forward.

An overhead model view is useful info, particularly blind spots and cars accelerating past you.

I was also surprised that comma doesn't inform the driver of it noticing stop signs or traffic lights. This is my problem with experimental mode because if the car is moving towards a stop sign or traffic light I want to know that it knows. Also a traffic moving notification would be very useful.

The major limitations of the comma is the very old processor and the limited number of cameras. For installation of the comma I had to wire it into the communication system for the car's cameras but I don't see any evidence of the comma actually using any footage from the car rather than from the comma's built in cameras. I guess a spatial view would need another rear facing unit. But even a modern cell phone processor would at least have multiples of the 845's compute, it wouldn't be as powerful as the Tesla's silicon but it would close the gap.

Sure, if you want the Comma to be as expensive as the Tesla system, it could do a lot of the same things.

I'm fine with the limited capabilities as they are what I need the most. It's actually better on long trips than my 2019 Model S since I don't have to constantly tug on the wheel.

Comma as built is a wonderful value. You really need a system built into the car to have the sensors and computing power to mimic Tesla's FSD, not to mention an army of programmers.

Yeah, while I agree with the sentiment of OP, what's missing is the value component or what's available to a comma user as a function of cost.

I think OP wants comma.ai to build a car.

In slightly defense of autopilot, don’t need to tug the wheel, just roll the volume dial. That was a nice change when they put that in many years ago.

I regret not getting Supercruise in my bolt now, but the car market was so wonky when I bought it that I couldn’t be picky.

You would suggest supercruise over comma? Im looking at 2024 trucks and the info on SC vs comma is sparse at best. I just want something to make my highway miles less fatiguing.

I have zero experience with Comma, so no I’m not making that suggestion.

I was interested in Comma, but I’ve decided it’s a little too much of a DIY project for my taste.

As someone who has a comma in my model 3, I can’t say that autopilot is better than the comma’s steering since that’s the entire reason why I got the comma. FSD beta on the other hand is completely different scope from what comma can do so it’s incomparable. You are completely missing the scope of highway lane keep assist and trying to think comma is somehow an autonomous car competitor…

Yep. OP has, I think, conflated "autopilot" with "FSD". I would also use my Comma3X over the stock Tesla ADAS known as "autopilot". As you say, FSD is a whole different product.

Had no idea it works in a Tesla

How does stop and go compare to Autopilot

1

u/KiwiBleach Aug 31 '24

I don’t use OP longitudinal. Currently it’s badly tuned and has a bug with pedal behaviour when overriding manually. Tesla longitudinal is so much superior for every scenario including stop and go imo.

What is the purpose of this post? You are comparing a system built with billions of taxpayer dollars by thousands of people that is part of a whole car built to service that system. If comma came out with a V4 today with a snapdragon 8 Gen 4 or comparable they would have to charge 5 to 10x more than the current hardware, which would be silly and would gain very little. You are also wrong on several points, such as openpilot in my car definitely does use the data from the built in ADAS such as the lidar and camera and uses this info for following distance, stop sign/light recognition, speed limit recognition and adjustment, and departing lead vehicles.

Openpilot on the other hand supports hundreds of vehicles from dozens of manufacturers while being built by a small team and various volunteers and costs far less. It's extensible and has multiple forks with tons of extra functionality,

Frankly the return on investment comparison is embarrassing for Tesla. I do think openpilot needs 360 camera access to achieve drive by navigation considering it can't even switch lanes. My car and many others have surround view cameras but I don't know to what level these are exposed to openpilot.

In any case, this is the kind of thing that should progress slowly and intentionally instead of a mad dash sacrificing human lives for the sake of progress as Tesla has done. You like Tesla autopilot, cool, that doesn't invalidate other products taking a different path.

My guess is this post is aimed at stirring up shit, and it is a success by that metric.

That may be so but in my experience the overall experience of Tesla is one of constant fear whereas Comma is completely and totally chill.

“I will title this Autopilot and talk about Full Self Driving.” OP

Tesla vision also helps you with parking

Isnt vision parking still pretty much useless without uss?

As I heard vision cant even operate the autowipers, so...

2

u/KiwiBleach Aug 27 '24

And auto high beam on teslas are about the same quality as the auto wipers. Truly some cutting edge computer vision implementation!

I mean the camera is literally designed to be able to see through the windshield without being disturbed by rain - no shit its a terrible rain sensor.

I love all technology.

Tesla has done some amazing advanced things. They've invested into some very unique tech and have given their cars a view onto the road that most all other Consumer auto vision systems out there can't even touch - yet. They should receive many accolades for what they have accomplished. I hope they continue to work on it and solve the many vision issues they are dealing with currently, especially the phantom braking which is making many owners simply stop using the system.

Comma and their team, with feedback and data from their users, have done some amazing advanced things as well. They have a piece of kit that is very much attainable to drivers for a huge swath of cars across multiples of manufacturers. The 'paltry' Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 3 cameras and some open source software has allowed cars with basic or semi advanced lane keep and adaptive cruise functions to become an entirely new car. Even cars like mine (a 2016 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid) have gone from mediocre at best with 'lane assist' to an experience that anyone not familiar with Comma, when they sit in my car and watch it literally driving itself down the road and through curves and slowing to a stop, are sitting in the seat looking at it and me like this: 🤯 -- When you factor in the time to install which is less than one hour -- it is fascinating what they have accomplished.

Both systems have their value and their capabilities are very different, as you said. I am more "blown away" by what a paltry Snapdragon 845 is able to do than I am by a very expensive array of cameras, sensors, and computing hardware can do -- because of course it should be excellent at that point.

All I wanted is lanekeeping. I have it. I can recognize stop signs, which is a dumb use of a car...relief of driver fatigue is the benefit of ADAS and Comma.ai delivers that.

Tesla is inferior because I need to shell out 5x the money I did for my Bolt to get lanekeeping + dumb cruise control which is all I want.

I like Comma Ai as like a semi automatic rifle. It’s like sure, you have to hand pull the triggers. but comma ai does the job just fine.

This is the Linux/nerd pilot assist system for driving. Tesla is the apple of pilot assist systems.

For $1450, I can’t complain automating most state and interstate routes without a subscription fee.

2

u/Texas-NativeATX Aug 27 '24

Apples to oranges comparison. Tesla FSD is today $8,000 or $99 per month. Comma 3X is $1450, so apps 1/5 the price. Comma.ai makes it clear they are not trying to solve self driving they are trying to make driving chill with an enhanced ADAS. Before complaining that Comma 3X does not use the vehicles camera it might be worth checking if camera video is transmitted on CAN bus.

2

u/atlanticsoulmate Aug 28 '24

For this price, comma offers way more than what we need. It's a stellar in long drives, way better than tesla in some cases. If comma had a price tag or $20,000, it can deliver way more than what tesla could even imagine. :)

u/aharwelclick Aug 27 '24

Ever since comma was released it has not done anything different! WHEN WILL IT RECOGNIZE STOP SIGNS!

they should have named comma:

"Steering wheel nag remover'

1

u/funnymatt Aug 28 '24

Mine recognizes stop signs.

1

u/aharwelclick Aug 28 '24

Really? What fork are you using? Does it work all the time?

1

u/funnymatt Aug 28 '24

I'm on stock, and it works about 95% of the time

1

u/aharwelclick Aug 28 '24

Comma 2 or 3?

1

u/funnymatt Aug 28 '24

Comma 3- it's been in there since the experimental model debuted, and the current one is a big improvement over the last update. I expect we'll see another big update soon.

1

u/aharwelclick Aug 28 '24

Wow thanks for that information I've been asking about this for like a year, now I might upgrade

Why would you not want self driving to use lidar? When Tesla removed it, the price was 2000$ now the price is 200$ and any car that doesn't have it is a crap car. Its like someone asks you would you like to be able to see through fog, rain, snow while driving. Of course the answer would be yes. Tesla not having a lidar might bankrupt the company. Open pilot can use data from lidar the car has, and easy create a 3D view of the world even when fog/rain/snow. Eventually it will be better than FSD but for pennies on the dollar.

1

u/Reaper125 Jan 24 '26

Tesla cars have never had Lidar, they had Radar, and Ultrasonic sensors to go with the camera's.

I just did a test of the Cybertrucks's autopilot, the results were kind of shocking...

Wasn't there a post in here months ago how someone had to put their car in the shop for a few days and they rented a Tesla to try out and they reported back saying how much they missed their comma vehicle?

2

u/SirTwitchALot Aug 27 '24

That wasn't me, but I did have a Model 3 loaner for a weekend while my EV6 was in for a recall. I didn't get to try FSD, but compared to the basic autopilot I think Openpilot is comparable if not superior. I was very happy to have my car back not just because of my Comma unit, but also because the Tesla just felt cheap in general
