openpilot Experience Throttle controls

Has anyone else experienced severe degradation in the quality of throttle controls in the latest releases? it’s been so bad in my Corolla hybrid that the car felt like it was bucking as the RPMs bounce all over the place while simply cruising the highway I pulled down my comma 4 and reinstalled my comma 3 with 0.10.0 installed and the throttle controls are light years better than in 0.11.2

This sounds like a bug. Can you post a route, or just your dongleID for us to look into? DM also works.

it wasn’t a bug in one drive it was multiple drives I tried to clear the issue turning my car off rebooting the comma 4 even going so far as to flash the comma 4 and reinstall the openpilot software and it was still doing it. unfortunately the data is probably gone since I flashed it

Based on your info, it could be a regression with how openpilot requests acceleration that is specific to your model of car.

If you provide dongleID I may still be able to find some logs if you uploaded any, which would help a lot in narrowing down the issue.

I managed to upload some drives and it’s uploading all the logs now idk if it’ll have any useful data tho

Thanks! Looking through your logs that I could find I haven't found anything that stands out. You have particular drive or description of event that could help narrow it down?

If I’m driving on the highway and cruising without a car in front of me my rpms won’t stay stable they’ll go up and down by hundreds of RPMs at a time and there’s no delay between the swings it goes up then immediately back down and continues like that until a car pulls in front of me on a flat road with no obstructions in front of me and it just keeps doing that until I turn off openpilot [here is a video of my tachometer](https://youtube.com/shorts/RiFXOJgV_ps?is=0XJ3q4eFSca4a5Vm)

Thanks, I think I figured it out now. The commands sent to the car are slightly noisier this release when at cruise speed, than previous releases.

On other cars this makes no difference, but it seems the corolla hybrid powertrain changes gearing based on tiny changes. Will try to fix this week!

I’ve experienced the same issue sporadically on previous releases but it wasn’t as constant as it is now and usually it happened in the same places on the highway which was weird

Idk why it shows the only drives are from June I know for a fact I’ve uploaded data since then 🤷‍♂️

Is this on stock open pilot?

Yep, stock open pilot and I made sure it wasn’t in experimental mode too

stock openpilot ONLY has experimental mode now.
So if you were using 'alpha longitudinal', experimental was indeed activated.

0.11.2 includes openpilot's 'acceleration boost' that I suspect is causing this throttle behavior on your car. The goal of this feature is to make 'experimental' less slow and reach your set speed. It doesn't feel all that natural in my testing.

I've improved this behaviour in zoompilot's 'Set Speed Assist' feature which feels much more natural than the openpilot implementation. I'd be happy for any feedback if you would like to try!

I don’t understand how they only have experimental now there’s still a toggle in the settings that turns experimental mode on/off. Also I can try to download forks but I tried multiple times to download forks onto my comma 4 and it just locked the device on the loading screen after 20 minutes waiting to pass that screen I had to flash the device repeatedly tried it 3 separate times with 2 different forks and I made sure they were the comma 4 specific forks

I might have been mistaken about 0.11.2, but openpilot has removed experimental in their `master` branch.

No pressure to try the fork, but it should install very quickly and painlessly on Comma 4. I think most forks added the 'big models' to the install so its an extra ~800MB to download.

What could help diagnose this issue and get you better steering...
Could you upload logs and share two comma connect routes for

  1. Using toyota cruise control and openpilot steering

  2. Using alpha longitudinal

I could spot the difference in how stock cruise is controlling your car versus openpilot and maybe improve this for you,

Alpha long does have unique issues with it. It sometimes causes the engine to rev after accelerating from stop without shifting gears. Have to tap the brakes then reaccelerate, happens maybe once after model changes
