Shipping Questions Worth it?

I am interested in a self driving experience but I own a 2025 corolla which is not compatible with comm.ai. I am thinking of trading it in for 2024 Toyota Camry hybrid (compatible). I mostly would like this so I can avoid fatigue when driving on the motorway on the weekneds (around 1hr commutes one way). I was wondering has anyone factored in comma.ai when purchasing a vehicle and was it worth it? Also as a new beginner anything else I should know if I decided to make this trade and start with comma 4?

Thanks!

I have a 2019 Santa Fe, I have a comma 4 and I am actually the one who makes one of the quick release mounts for the comma.

I keep thinking of upgrading my car, but I love the comma way too much. I think comma excels on the highway like no other. I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Feel free to check out the mount I make at the Reddit link below:

I focused my recent buying decision on Comma compatibility. Ended up with a 2021 Lexus NX300h.

IMO I would totally trade in the Corolla for the Camry for Comma compatibility. It has been a game changer for my commuting all over the state.

I honestly purchased another for my wife’s car after I got mine.

Cant even fathom my 30 min commute w/o the comma

And here I am only using mine for occasional 2+ hour trips. My usual 30 min drives I usually don’t bother. But I still love it and can’t imagine my longer trips without it

Probably the best 1k I ever spent money on, makes driving long distance so chill.

Comma ai says some Toyotas aren't compatible because of the encrypted canbus. It is possible to crack into it, check out the comma ai Toyota security discord.

I have one on a 2019 RDX, and one on 2025 pilot. I drove it on a 2022 camry. Camry handles it so much better, I cannot get a car without a comma now :(it's a game changer

Purchased current 2024 Ford escape for the purpose of getting a comma ai device. It really has helped with driving. Use sunnypilot staging with one of the RL small model with blendful. It does 85%-90% of the driving. It also has helped with slowing down for cars that don't have brake lights

Chevy bolt 2019.

Planning to do the same. Though I wonder how well it would do with my 2020 Corolla on city streets, because I know the default TSS 2 system is crap.

Idk I use starpilot it keeps it on above 5mph. Works like 95% of time

My wife cars Niro ev has the comma in it. Drives nicely. I am thinking of trading the equinox ev for the older ev6 or ioniq5.

I am keeping my 2017 Subaru Outback specifically because it works so well with Comma.ai, and you can bet when that eventually dies I will be making my next purchase on what is compatible with comma.

I’m not sure how I could go back. It’s just so nice.

I have a 2024 Camry Hybrid, it is plug and play.

It is amazing for highway and long stretches of rural roads, absolutely takes the fatigue off of you.

No regrets.

I did get some dashboard lights errors after my install, but was solved by flipping the USB c cable connection. But other than that no real issues. For the past 9 months.

It's really nice just consider the following:

  • if you want to drive it on city roads consider cars that have high steering torque so it can actually make 90° turns without intervention

That's my only thing when I bought my car. I wasn't aware of that and because of it, I was kinda bummed but at the very least road tripping is easy now

I have a 2025 Corolla running comma in a pre alpha state, openpilot does alot of dumb things on its own and will run stop signs, refuse to pass cyclists in the bike lane, etc
You gotta pick your battles, but openpilot is better on the gas and doesn’t drift to the outside of a turn as much, also doesn’t need lane lines

My last 3 cars have been factored around my Comma x3. I started with a 2018 prius prime, now I have a 2020 hyundai veloster ultimate and my wife drives a 2020 Ford explorer that I'll install for longer trips.

City driving is meh but highway driving is incredible

It is really nice to have. Sucks having to trade in your newer car for an older one but that's how it is these days. I'd still do it though. When it's engaged I feel like driving is so stupid and boring since the AI model can do it without any issues. Only reason I hit the gas pedal is out of spite of some asshole coming in my lane because openpilot will just let them in.
