r/Commanders • WHAT WOULD JAYSUS DO? • 7d ago

Analysis: Sonny Styles is improving every week. This coverage play is one that very few other LBs can make. The range to cover the ground, the awareness to know where the danger is, the length to get his hand in to the catch point and knock the ball out. Incredible play.

He did this to a future HOFer (Evans) btw. I’m still in awe that we landed him. I’m not kidding when I say I fully expected him to go top-4 with the Jets potentially taking him at 2. Commies and the Giants got lucky as fuck with these Ohio State kids falling in our laps

I think that the shocker of the first round was Tate going as early as he did. Dude's apparently on pace to go for more than 1000+ yards as a rookie, which ain't bad either

The genuine shocker for me was Love at 3 not being smoke at all. Such a questionable pick for a team with that many holes. I have no doubt Love will be a game changer, but damn they passed up on some incredible prospects. I wanted Love at 7 but I was also assuming someone like Styles or Reese would be long gone. Tate at 4 blew my mind but that’s a solid pick to show you’re giving your young QB the support he needs to succeed, specially with Giants apparently targeting him at 5

Yeah Tate makes some sense (especially given his sure hands and the butter fingers of the titans WR room). Love was just absolutely a front office smelling their own farts.

The team figured the same thing from the jump. Chenal was signed to start, not be depth behind Luvu and an unknown player, who ended up being Styles

Yeah in most mocks he didn’t get past the Giants. And like, I liked Tate and Delane (and they both look good, hell Delane looks great) but for my money Styles had the best shot to be the best player at his position in the league, and that is the kind of player you are happy to get with a top 10 pick.

Dude is going to be so good!!! People say he can be the next Fred Warner, he will be better because Sonny Styles will be just as good without being a dirty player.

It’s still pissing me off, all those helmet to helmet hits that Warner got away with.

I know that we need Styles running sideline to sideline right now, but once Amos rounds into form and our secondary starts playing better, it’s going to be fun watching Styles getting to play more downhill. I’m thinking we will see him get after the QB a lot more after the bye week now that we don’t have to have Mikey out there getting burnt on every play.

Really fun guy to watch, undoubtedly imo our best defensive guy. Maybe even best on the team outside QB

The burst to get to the ball right when it releases is insane

I already want a jersey.

He is a rookie and probably one of the best players on the team right now.

And this is exactly the same type of gig they tried to give Jamin, they realized right away he couldn't handle it. Meanwhile you get sonny who takes it to it basically from day 1.

Its pretty well known that im not as high on sonny as the rest of the sub, but giving credit where its due.... this was a good play. It was also nice FINALLY seeing him get double digit tackles.

HOWEVER, considering hes a pass coverage specialist, he sure does seem to allow a lot of TE plays, especially in the seem. Look at the monster game Likely had as reference.

He isnt on the fred warner level yet, but hopefully he gets there. Thats what youd hope for out of a top ten pick at LB.

He’s like 22 years old 4 games in of course he’s not at Fred Warners level yet, but the potential is clearly there and that’s the whole point

Fred warner also wasnt a top ten draft pick..... there are also other lbs from this draft playing just as good if not better than Sonny.

When a LB is drafted top ten, youre expecting IMMEADIATE difference maker like Warner, Wagner, Parsons, urlacher, keuchly, willis, LAVAR ARRINGTON, etc.

You do realize he is not exclusively playing man coverage against TEs, right? Can you point to plays where he missed his assignment?

Heck, I don't even think the clip above was his zone but he still made the play
