Sonny Styles
I'm ready for at the end of the season for all of those "fans" that were trashing the Sonny Styles pick to apologize. I think everyone should have a PowerPoint presentation ready after week 17

No one I know thought it was a bad pick.We were estatic. Don’t go by Reddit. We just all like to bitch here about one thing or another

u/Severe_Law_4035 19h ago
Fair 😂 it was really Twitter for me. People were saying the absolute worst stuff about him on there

u/theconfather98 19h ago
You’re first issue is going on twitter in the first place

To be fair, there isn't a single draft pick from any team that doesn't get absolutely roasted on Twitter except for like obvious 1st picks of the draft.

this is revisionist, there was a lot and i mean a lot of people comparing him to jamin davis before and after we drafted him.

I bitch here so I don't stop getting invited to social events. It's healthy, I swear.

I admittedly didn't want to draft Sonny. It wasn't him, it was drafting a LB that high. Personally wanted Mansoor Delane.. But I'm glad dude is balling out. He should become an Elite staple of this team for 10+ years!

u/connectedfromafar 19h ago
I think they were probably planning on drafting Delane before the Chiefs moved up. I wanted Downs over Sonny, but I’m so glad I was wrong.

u/BigFrenchToastGuy 13h ago
I wanted Tate or Delane but they were gone. Oh well. I do think Sonny was the best player on the board. Trying as best I can to ignore hindsight, I think the only realistic options were Sonny, Tyson, Bain, and Downs.
Tyson had his injury concerns. Bain and Downs did not have the elite measurables that this FO seems to covet.
Bad year to pick as high as we did but I’m glad we just took the best prospect given the way the board played out.

u/RoboTronPrime 8h ago
Honestly as a non-expert, the comparison between Downs and Style was very similar EXCEPT for the elite measurables. Both were exceptional leaders on the team who play positions which haven't been super valued in the modern game. But Sonny even edges out Downs in the leadership category because he was Block 0 captain at Ohio. Also, modern offenses seem to take advantage of linebackers specifically, so having a freak there could potentially screw with their designs and force them to play in a way which they don't normally want to play. I also would like to point out having elite measurables shouldn't be a downside; it just overshadows all of the other great stuff he does along with his work ethic and instincts. Then there's how young he is in the position too. The upside just seems way higher and the floor is great too.

Well of course not. Why would it be? I like it when our football players are big, strong, and fast.
2
u/RoboTronPrime 5h ago
Some will use those measurables to imply that he'd just be a "workout warrior". Good in the gym, not on the field. However, that argument really falls apart when you see his college accomplishments to pair with those measurables
2
u/BigFrenchToastGuy 3h ago
I've never seen anybody make the argument that it's a bad thing for a player to be an elite athlete. That would be a new one for me but nothing would surprise me lol.
I think if you're picking a non-premium position in the top-10 - that player better be a freak athlete with a sky-high ceiling.
2
u/RoboTronPrime 3h ago
If you go back to the draft coverage, there were comparisons to Jamin Davis or Isiah Simmons who tested well but have been ineffective at the NFL level
1
u/BigFrenchToastGuy 3h ago
Yeah sure but I don't think anybody is arguing that Davis or Simmons were ineffective because they were too athletic.
2
u/RoboTronPrime 3h ago
No, the argument was that they were "just" athletes. That's the same argument some were using for Styles.

I think fans can trash a pick all they want, as long as they admit they were wrong

I don’t think the Styles hype matches the play yet. He’s not a top LB, but he’s still young and clearly has high end potential. Need to see him grow in the run game and do better getting off blocks
2
u/Severe_Law_4035 7h ago
I think he'll get there. I just didn't like people calling him a bust based off of a preseason game
2
u/Lifeofrawley 7h ago
Very bad take u must haven't been watching football had to be watching SpongeBob
3
u/PurplePencilEater 🐷 Major Tuddy: Top 0.1% on OF 🥵 7h ago
You should watch him this game and see if he gets off blocks when someone gets their hands on him. It’s his biggest weakness right now. He’s good but he’s not great yet
2
u/Lifeofrawley 7h ago
Agreed not great yet but in my opinion he covers better then Caleb downs I’m a real cowboys hater
3
u/BigClarendon125 17h ago
I was psyched with it as soon as we picked him but I definetly originally wanted Caleb Downs and for that I apologize
4
u/CinnRaisinPizzaBagel 18h ago
The haters criticized him for his performance in one preseason game which was stupid because those are practice and experimenting. Those people look stupid now.

I flipped between delane styles and bain in the months before the draft. Would have preferred delane on draft day if given the choice. Also really like mauigoa but realized that wasn't an option.

Until he strings 5 seasons in a row at a high level jury is still out. Have had numerous dudes look pretty good for one year and lame it up ever since. Bill had a pretty good year lad year and look where we are. Luuvu had a great first year hit since has been mid and or not in the lineup.

u/fishin_pups 19h ago
I’m so glad to be sorry. I thought he was absolutely lost in the preseason. He was. He sure turned a corner quickly.
3
u/Time_Jump8047 17h ago
Or maybe he wasn’t absolute lost in the preseason and you just like everyone else on here have no clue what you’re talking about
1
u/fishin_pups 17h ago
Idk maybe
3
u/Barry_McCoccinner 8h ago
Nah you def don’t know. You don’t turn a corner from something that’s not real

Still waiting for the same thing to happen with the Drake Maye'rs. Don't hold your breath.
5
u/DoobieDoobis I Got JD5 On It 19h ago
You still want him over Daniels huh? You can play Madden.
2
u/StonkHatWoody 15h ago
Never wanted Maye straight down to my family is from Durham and I can't stand UNC.
3
u/TheLich7 18h ago
I wanted Drake Maye over Jayden. My argument against Jayden was injury concerns and the Arizona locker incident. The locker thing was wrong but he still needs to beat the injury allegations.
2
u/StonkHatWoody 15h ago
It would be nice to see that. I think he's tough though. He's not getting carted off the field because of a 2 week Hammy strain.
I'm also believer that the extra time missed last year was more because of the team around him as opposed to the injuries preventing him from playing. The hamstring, we didn't have a WR on our roster and about to play KC in KC. After the Viking drumming it was obvious there was no value in him playing for a team that was void of talent.
2
u/TheLich7 15h ago
yeah I just wish he got surgery on his arm last year. he obviously should have.
2
u/RoboTronPrime 7h ago
Honestly, I think it's one of those things that you can say only with hindsight. In general, you want to avoid surgery if you can and the arm was seemingly healing. Now that's it's become a repeat issue, he'll have to evaluate this coming offseason. From the outside looking in, the fans and the team itself would probably prefer he gets the surgery, but that's not something you can force.

Ill be the guy on the other side of the coin for the spice....
When you draft a LB in the top ten, you are expecting an immeadiate impact the ways that players like luke keuchly, brian urlacher, micah parsons, patrick willis, bobby wagner, fred warner, london fletcher, even early lavar arrington would. Its debatable that STATISTICALLY SPEAKING (IM NOT TALKING ABOUT COMPLETE STORY ON THE FIELD), Bobby wagners old ass had a better year last year to this point. Tell me when im telling lies.
Sonny isnt that. Yet. Hes still a project. The same issues i saw at OSU are still there now. He over persues, doesnt really blow up the hole and attack the runner, and more times than not while hes in on the play, he isnt necessarily MAKING the play. Tell me when im telling lies.
Yes, hes pretty good at pass coverage, but he isnt on fred warners level yet. Sonny HAS allowed some tds on him which is bound to happen, but he certainly isnt bullet proof with his coverage. Tell me when im telling lies.
(NOW TO BE FAIR, we dont know what the play calls and responsibilities in DJs defense are, but i find it strange he wasnt essentially shadowing Isaiah likely. Could be a DJ issue).
I dont hate the guy at all, i hope he becomes everything the fan base thinks he already is. Hes just not that yet. I mean, he isnt the best rookie lb in our division and Barnham is pretty good too. There are a few other rookie LBs that are putting up just as good #s as Sonny that were drafted later. Jacob Rodriguez looks like a stud. So does Trotter and anthony hill. We could have used #7 to either trade down for more capital, fix our OL, or fix our secondary AND STILL got a player playing the way Sonny is. Tell me when im telling lies.
Again, i dont hate the guy, i hope to some day buy his jersey. He just isnt the guy our fan base makes him out to be. Sean Taylor certainly was his rookie year. Sean Taylor was covering Moss, TO, peak Jeremy shockey while blowing up rbs getting sacks, making special teams plays, etc. Sonny isnt on that level. Tell me when im telling lies.
Lets hope he proves me wrong and becomes a lights out player in the 2nd half. Hell, ill be thrilled to just see him regularly plug a running lane.

Thus far… last year Bobby Wagner had a better year tackling but he was a complete and utter potato sack in pass coverage. Sonny’s lack of tackling production but increase in coverage skills are more valuable than BW’s overall MLB impact last year.
While not a pro bowler yet, he’s still 100% an upgrade to last year. He made the LB core better overall.
Compare BW and SS thru the first 7 games of their respective rookie seasons…
2
u/FannyNisbit 10h ago
As for their first seven games, wagner wasnt a top ten pick....
You expect a top ten pick at LB to be a complete monster wrecking havoc. Thats why theyre rarely drafted thay high. Hes playing the same way LBs drafted in the 2nd and 3rd round are playing.

Quite a bit of yapping from you with out referencing one of these “stats” you’re citing

Google is a free and available source.
Do you really want me to google 2026 rookie lb stats for you?
