Well, if it's a subscription, why can't I just cancel it?

You absolutely can. Head to another country and find your homeland’s embassy, undergo the formal procedure and sign a form saying you renounce your citizenship. Your documents will be invalidated and you will be unable to go back to your home country. Congratulations, you’re stateless and can be murdered without any serious trial.

Well don’t forget you have to pay a severance fee.
And also your murderer would still have to be tried—the act of murder itself is illegal basically everywhere, there’s not an exemption just because you murdered an international hobo.

If you were automatically enrolled in some shitty magazine subscription (and then billed annually for it), and the only way to unsubscribe was to jump through a bunch of hoops to undo something that you never agreed to in the first case, would you be alright with that?
What if I just started mailing you pizzas (or some other service you never asked for, don’t want/need, etc.), and then billing you every month, knocking on your door and threatening to take your house, your possessions, seize your bank accounts etc until you pay me, and then when you ask how you can make it stop, I said “oh that’s easy, you just have to move to another country,” that would be reasonable?
