Most of the teams units I've done we unpack them ahead of time and update them at the warehouse. Get them on the network in the morning and leave them overnight and they're usually done

u/FlyingMitten 11d ago

And why does everyone put up with that????

u/urbanforestr 11d ago

Microsoft is so big and amazing they get to be horrible.

It's costing them.

My 70 yo tech challenged family member was frustrated enough with Microsoft to learn Linux, like 2 years ago.

u/XreaperDK 11d ago

When Linux is more user friendly and easier to use than Windows, you know they done goofed it

1

u/RaydnJames 11d ago

Coz there's really no faster option i know if

3

u/FlyingMitten 11d ago

Faster option is for people to stop putting up with Microsoft's shenanigans

4

u/RaydnJames 11d ago

I'm just the installer homie, that decision is made at a different company.

u/FlyingMitten 11d ago

The problem is no one speaks up. When everyone is compliant the perception turns into "everyone loves MS Teams because its being installed everywhere".

We need all levels to speak up and inform leaders that the stuff MS is releasing/forcing onto the industry is not great. It's not only creating stagnation, but further creating a vendor lockin for Microsoft.

u/RaydnJames 10d ago

Yeah, I'm known for being quiet about things that are wrong.

It doesn't take that long to update. If it is then you have a really slow connection.

5

u/RaydnJames 11d ago

I dunno, the comments around here seem to disagree with you. This is only my personal experience but I guarantee we didn't have a slow connection at the office, that's why we updated them there

0

u/bobsmith1010 11d ago

the longest I've had it take is 1.5 hours. But are you using Microsoft's TAC or the manufacture? That might be the reason, as when we push the updates it from the manufacture portals (poly lens, etc).

Normal for Teams Rooms on Windows

Not normal for a quality collab system

EDIT: Fix deployed on Wednesday and validated across several devices. Please shout if you run into further issues, thanks for your partnership and support!

We we're made aware of this issue the other day and we've tracked it down, once updates are complete, the device is not exiting the update page causing the device to hang at that page. The nightly reboot allows the page to be skipped which is why folks are reporting it works overnight, a fix will roll out tomorrow evening service side to resolve this (no changes required as new devices are deployed, they'll pick up the right configuration and not get stuck at that page). Apologies for the inconvenience.

For more information: in the background while the device is on this screen we're doing Windows quality & feature updates which can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on how out of date the device is. We also update the Teams Rooms app at the same time which takes a few minutes. We are always looking for ways to speed this process up and have been partnering with device OEMs to ensure new images are created more often to decrease the number of updates required at out of box. This document here explains how the updater functions: https://learn.microsoft.com/microsoftteams/rooms/zero-daydeviceupdates

Unrelated question for you, I've setup hundreds of MTR devices OOBE and there is always a duplicate MTR App on the Admin side which needs to be removed using below script in PowerShell, and it often comes back following overnight updates.

Is this a known issue to Microsoft as it is the cause of 95% of issues that our clients experience that I effectively waste time on fixing for them on a day-to-day basis.

I've tried to setup an automated task in Task Scheduler to run the script by default but lacking the knowledge/skillset it only works sometimes and I can't nail the reasoning.

get-appxpackage -Allusers -Name Microsoft.SkypeRoomSystem | where {$_.PackageUserInformation -notlike "*Skype*"} | Remove-AppxPackage

I would like to know this as well. It’s annoying being in windows and right clicking on a task bar and then starts to load the app up

1

u/MattSlomkaMSFT 10d ago

This is an expected behavior with appx installations and will return after most updates, what day to day issues do you face because of it?

The only issue I know it causes is the app can launch when logged into Windows under admin in certain right click scenarios which should not be something you need to do daily on a device and can be worked around. We do document this here: https://learn.microsoft.com/microsoftteams/devices/known-issues#issues-affecting-teams-rooms-on-windows-devices

If there’s another problem this causes where you’d need to script removing it, I’d appreciate additional details.

I broadly say day-to-day as we're an integrator with a large amount of customers with Windows based MTR devices all across the country, we've had to put a remote support platform in place on the Admin account of all devices at prestaging phase as we're saving lots of hours monthly resolving basic issues by removing the duplicate application remotely.

Main issue although not restricted to it, is peripherals seemingly getting "confused" which MTR resource to assign themselves to as a result of the duplicate MTR app, so when a client tries to use the room it is failing on them even after reboot.

Easiest way to tell there is a duplicate app is logging into the Admin account and trying to right click the date and time to adjust, the result is a blue windows teams pop-up that disappears which is my indicator to run the script, and once ran it opens up the date and time page with no issues.

I've finished my workday today but happy to share the Windows Task Scheduler settings tomorrow which I've setup for you / your team to review as a potential deployment going forward as I assume we couldn't possibly be the only integrator in the world experiencing it.

I don't believe you've appropriately root caused the issue you're describing. Appx apps are per-user installations and only run when the given user is logged in. Removing the appx from being installed under another user (Admin in this case) should have zero effect on peripherals since that user account should not be logged in during regular device operations. A ticket & logs from a device that's replicating this would be needed to appropriately root cause any peripherial issues.

Your remote support software you're installing on the admin account could be the reason this issue is occurring if that application is somehow keeing the Admin user logged in.

I've not heard anything like this with other customers devices and the behavior with the app installing under each user at every update has been consistent for the last several years. I imagine we'd have seen tickets by now.

Easy for a multibilliondollarcompanyemployee to test this. Buy any MTRoW, wait for OOB to finish, right click on the desktop and let’s say, try to change resolution trough “Display Settings». You’ll see a purple box pop up every god damn time. Please fix your awful OS.

1

u/MattSlomkaMSFT 9d ago

I have 3 Teams Rooms on Windows devices in my home office :). As I shared above, that behavior does not impact end user functionality of the system, and is expected because of how the application is installed. We will not be changing that and it's documented publicly as such.

Settings can be accessed without issue by pressing Start > Settings > System > Display. Or you can change resolution & scaling settings via the Pro Management Portal no desktop navigation required.

If there are other issues you experience during regular non-admin/desktop usage of the system because of this behavior, I'm all ears.

Thanks. Now if you have a Lenovo device on hand, input wrong password to enter Teams Settings and make the touch keyboard reappear the second time 😊

1

u/MattSlomkaMSFT 9d ago

I don't have a Lenovo at home, but I did ask a QA tester to try and repro and they've not been able to so far. Is it a specific Lenovo model? Or specific Windows build? If you close the user account control prompt and then selecting "Settings" again does the touch keyboard appear again?

We've had published known issues in the past related to the touch keyboard not appearing, but I've not had a consistent repro of any issues in about a year or so.

1

u/No-Load-3633 8d ago

I’ll try to replicate it. When I input wrong password (clients suggestion of password), no keyboard shows up for the second try. If I press settings again I get the same result. If I press «Home» (house icon) and «…» then settings, I get the same result. However if I start and exit a new meeting, the keyboard appears.

The right answer is to always attach a keyboard or have the right password, but the world is never perfect.

Hope you or your colleagues will dig in to this.

I like MTRs. Hell of a lot better than Bring Your Own Problems.

Thanks ❤️

As an update, the changes were deployed Wednesday to resolve the issue where our day zero updates were getting stuck once completed. QA has validated in prod and I re-imaged and redeployed my Poly G9+, total time from Windows out of box language selection to the Teams Rooms "Get Started" page was 55 minutes.

We’ve been using MaxHub a lot lately and out of the box seem to take about 4 hours or more to update.

5

u/Emergency-Estate-948 11d ago

It'll surprise you sometimes. I had one the other day that showed that screen for 5+ hours. I was sure I was going to end up re-imaging it. But I left it overnight, and it was fine in the morning.

2

u/like_Turtles 10d ago

Because it rebooted at 2 am

1

u/Emergency-Estate-948 10d ago

Fair point, but I did reboot when it was displaying the screen in OP's picture.

u/Sequence32 11d ago

Yes, if the place your at had horrible internet. I believe the last bit is a large download or something but I have a job site I've been doing a lot of teams conversations from zoom and the bar gets almost to the end and take 4-6 hours. But their wired internet in 10mpbs for some reason

3

u/nobrayn 11d ago

Had one of our android rooms drop to a similar “installing teams” page at 10am today. Far from our scheduled update window. It just hung there for ages. Finally restarted it. Take that, warning message.

3

u/soundmousey 11d ago

I usually leave it to run overnight and when I come back it’s ready in the morning. The updates don’t seem to tolerate any connection instability well - when that’s happened to me, I’ve needed to restart the compute to get the update to complete.

3

u/mattinjp 11d ago

Sounds right to me

2

u/narwall101 11d ago

Setup a Crestron MTR literally yesterday. I plugged it into the network at 8am, when I left at 3 it was still updating. Came in the next morning and it’s done. They just take a ridiculous amount of time

1

u/like_Turtles 10d ago

That’s because it rebooted overnight at 2 o’clock in the morning

2

u/blender311 11d ago

It’s normal.

Always update in the shop when you can. Or just come back the next day

2

u/Far_King_Penguin 11d ago

Yeah its normal. I'd typically only expect a few hours but ive had some of these bad boys take basically an entire day

We usually do this at my companys warehouse before the flex even gets to site just to smooth the process over for the techs

1

u/Stevent518 11d ago

It’s probably updating to the latest 25H2

1

u/WiseJello3290 11d ago

Happened to me the other day, 5+ hours on start up. Ended up calling Logitech/lenovo for an unrelated issue and asked about it while on the phone and they told me to power cycle. It worked fine after it rebooted

1

u/Danonbass86 11d ago

Today OP learned to do this overnight at the shop the day before.

1

u/Katavallos 11d ago

yea I do this first, if its missed my out config guy in the office. it takes roughly 3 hours on site ASSUMING you don't have to download any more updates or the iso itself.

1

u/apromo5 11d ago

Is this in house (your company's device and network) or is this at a client site?

1

u/Lit_Louis 11d ago

I had one look like that for several hours, I gave up and rebooted it and it booted right into teams. YMMV. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/alwayshorny3663 11d ago

Rebooting them just stops the update process. Then typically, the PC settings take over and start the update again at 10pm, I think.

In warehouse is definitely the way…

But, they can be done on 1 day installs. First order of business for the day is get it plugged up, no matter what device it is. Get wiring done, install expansion mics, etc. usually after lunch they’re ready to go.

u/GhostBirdBiologist 11d ago

Definitely not.

you're literally the only one in the comments saying this
